Compliance Matters #9 | Francisco Hernández | Podcast IE University & Elecnor

In this ninth episode, we converse with Francisco Hernández, Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer of DuPont, to discuss the role of large corporations in society and how an ethical culture can strengthen the sustainability of an effective compliance program.

Our host, Enrique Aznar, Academic Director of the IE-Elecnor Observatory on Sustainable Compliance, talks to Francisco Hernández about his experience in a multinational corporation like DuPont, where the Chief Compliance Officer plays a significant part in their global strategy.

Francisco Hernández explains that, in today’s business world, business ethics and corporate responsibility are more critical than ever. Organizations face global challenges that require a reevaluation of their approach to ethics and responsibility. In this context, the role of the Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) stands out as a fundamental pillar to ensure consistency between what a company says and what it actually does.

Francisco Hernández mentions that, at DuPont, they understand the importance of industrial safety, not only for employees but also for business partners and society at large. This ethical commitment is an example of how corporate values can become an integral part of corporate culture.

Today, the role of the CCO goes beyond regulatory compliance. It adds value by ensuring consistency between what the company states and what it does. Their role is strategic, helping to measure and mitigate long-term risks. To be successful, the CCO must earn the trust of the board of directors and company leaders, demonstrating expertise and business knowledge.

Finally, Francisco Hernández reflects on the phrase, “Knowing where I am to know who I am,” considering it key to understanding the role of the Compliance Officer – to view a company’s compliance as a whole, affecting not only employees but also society.

The IE-Elecnor Observatory on Sustainable Compliance Cultures was established at the end of 2019 when the IE Foundation and Elecnor Foundation recognized the need to analyze the development and adoption of a culture of Sustainable Compliance in medium and small-sized companies to deeply understand their challenges, study possible solutions, and disseminate the knowledge generated.
