February 8, 2024

In a recent interview on Vive! Segovia radio, Professor Dae-Jin Lee from IE Research Datalab discussed artificial intelligence (AI). The conversation started with a commentary on AI’s ability to mimic human voices. Dae-Jin noted its potential for innovation and misuse, such as in scams where AI imitates company executives to request money. This, professor Lee noted, mirrors traditional email scams.

Following the topic of misuse, Professor Lee called for balanced regulatory frameworks to mitigate AI risks. Laws must ensure the safety of citizens against AI, while still promoting progress. Dae-Jin emphasized the importance of privacy and the need for legislation that can adapt to rapid technological developments.

Turning the conversation into an optimistic light, professor Lee also showcased AI’s positive uses. Examples include image-based AI that reconstruct body parts for medical surgeries, and uses in historical preservation. In this context, Dae-Jin cited a project in Segovia aiming to reconstruct the city’s Roman era. Professor Lee also commented on the strengths of text-based AI, which is now able to detect fake news on social media.

As a final remark, Dae-Jin Lee commented on his role as a professor at IE University. He stressed the importance of comprehensive AI education. At IE University, the curriculum includes AI across all fields, including law and business, to ensure students understand AI’s potential and limitations.

The full interview is available in Spanish, with Lee’s segment starting at 23:40.
