Operations Research develops mathematical and computational methods to support better decisions in complex systems. It combines optimization, statistics, simulation, and algorithm design to study problems where resources are limited, uncertainty is present, and trade-offs matter. The goal is to turn data and domain knowledge into models that help compare alternatives, evaluate constraints, and identify effective courses of action.
At IE, research in Operations Research focuses on building methods for planning, scheduling, routing, allocation, and decision-making under uncertainty. This includes exact and heuristic approaches for large-scale problems, stochastic and robust models, multi-objective methods, and simulation-based analysis. These tools help address real problems where cost, time, risk, sustainability, and service quality must be balanced.
Operations Research has direct impact across industry and society. Applications include transport and logistics, maritime routing, energy systems, healthcare operations, and supply chain planning. By combining rigorous modelling with practical implementation, this research supports more efficient, reliable, and sustainable operations.
