INNOVATION IN THE LEGAL MARKET (“ILM”) sits at the intersection of law, technology, innovation, and business. It is a demanding, hands-on, project-based course that requires students to show up, engage, and do the work. There is no passive participation here.
Using a blended format combining in-person and virtual sessions, ILM equips students with the tools and techniques to shape their professional identity and compete in the future professional services marketplace. Students work both in teams and individually, applying what they learn in real time to a semester-long project that culminates in a live final presentation. Because the course is built on collaboration, peer feedback, and experiential learning, in-person attendance and active participation are not optional. They are the course.
ILM is particularly valuable for students contemplating a global career in law, consulting, entrepreneurship, or any of the growing number of non-traditional paths that a law degree can open. If you are here, you are already thinking differently. This course is designed to take that instinct and build it into a practice.
ILM is a demanding course. It is an innovative, interactive exercise in experiential learning that:
Draws upon students’ interests in technology, legal design, entrepreneurship, marketing and branding, communication, and the law;
Builds 21st-century professional skills including problem finding, problem solving, project management, cultural competency, teamwork, feedback, and leadership; and
Enables students to understand both their role and the opportunities available to them within a rapidly changing professional services environment.
In addition to broadening their substantive knowledge and skill set, students will be challenged to think and work differently. In lieu of a final exam, ILM requires students to work in teams to develop a dynamic presentation and prototype that solves a real-world legal problem. The prototype is not a thought experiment. It is a tangible, tested artifact built over the course of the semester.
Throughout the course, students will hear from high-profile, creative, and impactful leaders who are actively shaping the future of the legal industry. They will broaden their networks by engaging with experts across digital transformation, accessibility, commerciality, legal design, and more. Students are expected to bring professionalism, curiosity, creativity, cultural open-mindedness, and genuine collaboration to every session.
Successful students come to class prepared and eager to contribute. This is not a course you can spectate. It is one where we learn about new topics, new technologies, each other, and ourselves.
