The era of big power rivalry is back and with it a whole new geopolitical context. The eruption of significant geopolitical shocks – the rise of China and its sable-rattling in the South China Sea, the US’s geoeconomic confrontation of China, or the Russian invasion of Ukraine – are not isolated events. To the contrary, they are symptoms of shifting geopolitical tectonic plaques. Even before the war in Ukraine these global geopolitical tectonic plaques had started shifting, heralding a new age of geopolitical risks. In fact, most of the recent major shocks for business are the result of the impact of global geopolitical risks and ‘black swans’.
Understanding the impact of these risks on business in these times of global geopolitical uncertainty has therefore never been more important. That is the objective of this course.
The new global geopolitical context is giving rise to a whole new set of risks that are profoundly reshaping the context within which we will all have to work and live. In this increasingly challenging context, it is crucial to be able to think critically and holistically, and to be forward-looking about this new geopolitical reality. An essential component of this will be the ability to identify the origins and causes of current geopolitical trends and risks, understand how these trends interact with each other and assess the possible scenarios they may take our firms, economies and societies into.
This course will help in that process. It will do so by exploring the nature and possible evolution of key geopolitical trends, identifying the geopolitical risks they will generate and equipping you with the tools to manage in times of geopolitical uncertainty.
