Tale of three cities

 

I. Nueva York
I love New York.
Encadenando Happy Hours que duran años,
en Nueva York dejas la cuenta abierta en los bares
y en la calle,
mientras te va consumiendo la vida por dentro,
una deuda imperceptible y vigilante.
De partida diez años más joven,
te permites ser egoísta, desenfrenado,
pero saliendo del metro, de pronto, con prisa,
la ciudad te cobra peaje
y te asesta un golpe de arrugas y desgana.
Nueva York lo es todo, entera, sublime,
en el reflejo vitriólico de sus rascacielos
no te ves a tí mismo,
si no a quien puedes llegar a ser,
si sacrificas en el altar de sus desmanes
tu espacio, tus gozos y alguna de tus sombras.
Nueva York te empuja desde las barras de bar,
apurando conversaciones más tristes que en las películas,
para no terminar en la habitación del hotel,
minúscula,
donde, solo, piensas en la levedad de tu existencia
y en la necesidad de triunfar con reglas ajenas,
con las cartas marcadas.
El olor a canuto destila sueños rotos
y alimenta una sed, inaguantable, de ser reconocido,
en una ciudad donde todo el mundo porta máscaras,
donde nadie es de aquí.
Pero todos creen que llevan algo de Nueva York
en su bolsillo.

 

II: Madrid
El suelo de Madrid cuenta historias
sobre capas de servilletas sucias
y tapas desperdiciadas,
escupidas desde la risa
que cuenta siempre los mejores relatos.
Madrid te acoge suave en las caídas,
pero es difícil asirse a sus esquinas,
borrachos de tanto entusiasmo y vermut.
Y el cielo se tiñe de promesas sublimes,
un arrebol crepuscular,
escenario de duelos interminables
contra poetas ocasionales entre gritos y orines.
Madrid te acompaña de noches larguísimas
donde perderse de una vez por todas,
aunque siempre vuelve a ser de día,
porque Madrid es, ante todo, luz.
Haces que se cuelan entre las hojas
de los árboles del Retiro,
mientras una madre, su bebé y una amiga
toman más de una Mahou en La Florida.
Un sol dado por descontado,
tanto que bajamos las persianas,
tele-trabajando el disimulo
y dificultando al vecino voyeur sus ansias,
en un diálogo silente entre patios de manzana.
Madrid late,
como una taquicardia de sensaciones,
un impulso de sexo y descaro,
un adolescente que se ve bien,
a pesar del desgarbo y los granos.
El cielo puede esperarme aquí,
dibujando sombras contra sus plazas,
viviendo, bebiendo la última a tragos,
al borde de las aceras,
donde pararse resulta raro.
Menos en Madrid.

 

III. Sao Paulo
Desde la última montaña escalada,
desde el éxito improbable,
desde la búsqueda enloquecida del "fuck you money",
sin tener jamás certeza si es que has llegado,
llega el bofetón despiadado de que,
al fin y al cabo,
no le importa absolutamente a nadie.
São Paulo es un gigante impasible
ante las miserias y los desempeños,
dura, llena de aristas afiladas que no perdonan,
cortando en dos el descuido,
entre la indolencia despistada de los turistas.
São Paulo golpea bajo, contra los huesos,
te clasifica como ganado listo para el matadero
de los dioses del dinero, el lujo
y la miseria de las favelas,
entre coches deportivos.
Los rascacielos se elevan sin dudas, interminables,
haciéndonos aún más débiles,
devolviendo imágenes deformadas y diminutas.
En cambio, los árboles debajo se tuercen,
buscando caminos,
adaptándose a la vida entre recovecos.
São Paulo huele a mezcla de sudores,
a asfalto con papaya,
mientras llueve cachaça a borbotones
en las gargantas de los elegidos.
São Paulo te abraza
pero sus brazos sólo se protegen a sí misma,
en una cruel brincadeira más,
mientras nos espera para el próximo viaje,
con nuevas promesas y ningún desenlace.

EL NUMEN DEL AIRE

“Ruega Señor.
Estamos cerca.”

A la matriz urbana
de los acantilados,
al hambre casi esférica
de las víctimas rojas,
de los lobos sin rocío,
de los ocasos sin rumbo,
al ritmo imaginario de las cosas prohibidas,
al oprobio que filtra sus licores
hasta el final de algo rocoso y libre,
al anciano al que solo le emociona
la nieve ya que anega la mirada,
a aquello inocuo destilando el numen del aire,
al olvido si surge entre el surco y el relente,
al aria de la vida que gime y que golpea,
al dios tan importante que nunca nos murmura,
a la esperanza de un adiós sereno,
al origen de todo lo que a veces es todo,
a eso, cuando despierta más allá de lo frágil,
a esa sima hacia donde se da la lejanía,
a aquello que aprendemos cuando el mundo enloquece,
a la bóveda de alguien que nos miente y nos salva,
al delicado rostro de la perversidad,
a los miles de estrépitos que arrasan la tierra…
… ¿qué añado yo, Señor?
¿qué añado yo, Señor, a estos parajes inhóspitos?

Las paredes desnudas forman el gesto
y acogen
el cuadrado de luz en las sábanas azules,
los cristales sucios, las pequeñas
partículas luminosas que levitan serenas,
—visibles solo al abrigo de este haz solar—,
las postales apiladas,
el hueco en los espacios,
las maletas marrones en el suelo,
los platos recién lavados, tiritando,
la almohada gris sin funda,
esta oquedad y aquel sinónimo.
Las paredes desnudas forman el gesto:
la misericordia atenuante;
el adiós inevitable.

Step one get the utility knife,
wipe the blade with an alcohol swab to sterilize it,
so when you cut your hand you reduce the risk of infection.

Step two get two bandages ready,
peel the back off them, so that you can use one hand to apply the bandage
to the wound on the other hand.

Step Three - Take out your phone, press 1 and 1 so you only have to press on the two in order to summon the ambulance. If things go really wrong, you can make the call with your elbow or nose.

Step Four - turn off the main power switch, canceling all power to the home

Traveling for days
On the snow-covered roads of Kulykivka
Unaware of her son’s fate
A black bird flies overhead
Is my son dead?
A flood of memories flash before her in vivid hues
Sebastian’s first smile, his soft teddy bear
The way he lovingly embraced her.
A soldier in a brown woollen cap approaches
Then hastily hands over a limp, lifeless body
Naked, in a tightly-tied green plastic bag
Where air and light can no longer enter
Laughter or music never again heard
And where the horrors of war
Can never be forgiven or forgotten.
Nineteen years of life
Inert in a trifling, trodden trash bag.
Perhaps in another dimension, in the vastness of the universe
These moments will eternally live on.
Under a heavy winter sky
In somber, solitary silence

Dos latidos

Belén despertó en la serenidad de una habitación bañada por una cálida y tenue luz ambiental. Su penumbra contrastaba con la vibrante ciudad, llena de luces de neón, que se extendía más allá del enorme ventanal. Los edificios brillaban con cientos de colores y secuencias, mientras los vehículos autónomos se deslizaban por las arterias de vidrio y acero de la metrópolis, en una danza de caos organizado.

El silencio de la habitación sólo era interrumpido por los leves zumbidos de la maquinaria médica que rodeaba la cama de Belén. Las pantallas holográficas suspendidas en el aire informaban de cientos de parámetros de salud en tiempo real, como tributo al cuidado meticuloso que se tenía por la huésped. Todo en esa habitación gritaba exclusividad: diseño minimalista, alta tecnología, muebles de vanguardia y ese gran ventanal que revelaban una espectacular vista de la ciudad. Se encontraba, sin duda, en la sección más exclusiva de un hospital.

A su lado, un androide salió de su estado de letargo y comenzó a emitir sonidos electromecánicos. Estaba diseñado con forma de mujer de rasgos suaves y tranquilos, vestida con un impecable uniforme de enfermera. Aunque su apariencia era perfecta, su cara de piel sintética carecía de la calidez que transmiten los seres humanos.

–Hola, Belén. Mi nombre es Aurora. Soy la inteligencia artificial asignada a tu atención y cuidado mientras estás ingresada en este hospital.

La voz de Aurora, aunque generada digitalmente, fue diseñada para ser suave y reconfortante con sus pacientes.

–¿Qué hago aquí?... ¿qué ha pasado? –murmuró Belén, aún desorientada.

–Lo primero es decirte que te encuentras bien y que tu vida no corre peligro. –respondió Aurora con calma–. Tuviste un accidente de tráfico cuando ibas en tu coche, hace unas horas.

Belén la interrumpió, con incredulidad.

–¿Un accidente? Imposible, los coches no tienen accidentes.

–Los accidentes son extremadamente raros hoy en día –dijo Aurora asintiendo–. Sin embargo, anoche ocurrió lo insólito. Tú estabas a bordo de uno de los dos vehículos implicados.

Aurora se acercó un par de pasos a la cama de Belén, con perfecta fluidez mecánica. Y continuó:

–Todo sucedió muy rápido. Las IA de los vehículos activaron medidas de seguridad para protegerte, entre ellas una sedación de emergencia. Por eso has estado inconsciente unas horas.

Belén sintió un escalofrío al escuchar eso.

–¿Unas horas? ¿he estado inconsciente unas horas? ¿por qué?

–Sí Belén: te inyectamos una sustancia en tu torrente sanguíneo, instantes antes del impacto. Un coctel de medicamentos destinados a evitar el trauma cerebral por el impacto, a reducir tu metabolismo a funciones críticas y a reducir el riesgo de desangrado en caso de trauma grave –explicó Aurora, su tono siempre constante y amable.

Desconcertada, Belén movió ansiosa sus manos y sus pies. Se tocó la cabeza, miro a un lado y al otro. Trató de buscar un espejo a su alrededor. Su cuerpo y su imagen eran muy importantes para ella.

–Pero... estoy bien, ¿verdad?

–Así es, Belén, no tienes ningún daño físico importante. Teniendo en cuenta la gravedad del accidente, es una verdadera fortuna, pues los vehículos sufrieron daños importantes –confirmó Aurora–. Hemos llevado a cabo un chequeo completo y no se han encontrado daños en tus tejidos, más allá de algunas contusiones, que se curarán en unos días.

Belén se acomodó en la cama, intentando procesar lo ocurrido.

–Te recomiendo que descanses un poco, Belén. Aún nos quedan un par de resultados que analizar de tus pruebas; pero pronto podrás irte a casa –aconsejó Aurora mientras simulaba leer unos informes–. Ah, y hemos notificado el accidente a tus contactos de emergencia. También acabamos de notificarles que has despertado.

No habían pasado ni veinte segundos, cuando el espacio a los pies de la cama de Belén parpadeó, emitiendo una suave luz azulada antes de proyectar una imagen holográfica de un hombre mayor. Con su cabello canoso perfectamente peinado y una expresión de gravedad, se le identificaba fácilmente como alguien de poder y autoridad.

–Papá...– murmuró, su voz cargada de sorpresa y con un toque de ansiedad.

–Belén –comenzó el hombre con un tono suave, su rostro transmitiendo genuina preocupación –. ¿Cómo te sientes, hija? Te veo... bastante bien, teniendo en cuenta las circunstancias.

Belén esbozó una pequeña sonrisa mientras se trataba de adecentar el pelo con la mano.

–Estoy bien, papá. Sólo un poco desubicada por todo esto.

El hombre asintió con una sonrisa antes de cambiar su tono por una voz grave y de resonancia profunda.

–Estoy aliviado de que estés bien, ha sido un gran susto. Pero esta es una situación delicada, con implicaciones que no podemos desatender.

Belén frunció el ceño, –¿Implicaciones? ¿No es suficiente con que esté viva y a salvo?

–Por supuesto, estoy muy agradecido por eso –suspiró el padre–. Pero hay más factores en juego. Los accidentes de coche ya no deben ocurrir, son cosa del pasado, como cuando se fumaba o se consumía azúcar. Nos interesa que no haya noticia, que este accidente sea un hecho anónimo.

La cara del padre se fue tornando más seria y menos condescendiente.

–No podemos permitir que tu imagen, o la de nuestra compañía, se vea manchada. Ni que la gente ponga en duda el sistema de prevención de accidentes.

–Todos pagan seguros muy caros; el sistema debe funcionar a la perfección –interrumpió Belén, con cierto tono de disgusto.

–Es... otra forma de decirlo –sentenció el Padre –. Hija, necesito que vengas a casa ahora mismo.

A pesar de sus palabras, Belén percibió la preocupación en sus ojos, la misma que siempre escondía detrás de su fachada de duro empresario. Sin embargo, la distancia entre ambos parecía insalvable en ese momento.

–Pero ¿qué estás diciendo? ¿Que me marche del hospital en medio de la noche? –preguntó Belén, su incredulidad evidente en su tono.

–Sí hija. Es mejor mantener la discreción en este asunto. Ah, y no hables con nadie por el momento. –afirmó su padre, su rostro serio–. Mandaré un coche a recogerte.

Belén quedó en silencio, considerando las palabras de su padre. El vacío entre ellos se hacía más evidente, pero a pesar de su resentimiento, no podía ignorar aquella orden.

–Está bien, papá, –respondió finalmente Belén–. Déjame que me organice y terminen de chequearme; yo te avisaré.

Acto seguido hizo un gesto con la mano para finalizar la comunicación. La imagen de su padre se desvaneció, dejándola de nuevo a solas con sus pensamientos.

Pocos niveles más abajo, en el mismo edificio, Rafa despertó en una habitación marcada por su esterilidad. Lámparas de luz insuficiente brillaban desde el techo, revelando la simplicidad utilitaria de su entorno: una cama de barreras metálicas, con una gran sábana cubriéndole, no había mucho más a la vista.  No le importaba el exterior; Rafa estaba lidiando con el torbellino de confusión en su interior.

La puerta se abrió con un sonido metálico y lo que parecía ser la forma de una mujer, en uniforme médico, se hizo visible al otro lado. Aurora, el asistente de inteligencia artificial, se acercó a él con un andar perfecto y sosegado.

–Rafa –comenzó Aurora con su voz suave y calmada –. Estás en el hospital central de la ciudad. Has tenido un accidente.

Tras dos segundos, Aurora continuó hablando:

–Te hemos inducido sedación profunda para minimizar el shock emocional y físico. Por eso te encuentras desorientado y con los sentidos impedidos. Por favor, no trates de levantarte, tu estado es delicado.

Rafa la miró, sus ojos nublados por la confusión y la droga.

–¿Accidente? ¿Qué... qué ha pasado?

–Estabas en tu vehículo, volviendo a casa, cuando ocurrió el accidente. Ambos vehículos colisionaron fuertemente. Los servicios de emergencia te rescataron, ya inconsciente, y te trajeron rápidamente aquí, donde te hemos operado y estabilizado.

Rafa parpadeó, intentando procesar la información.

–¿Un accidente de coche? ¿Pero cómo? Pensaba que eso... que eso ya no pasaba nunca.

–El sistema central de control de vehículos autónomos tiene una eficiencia en seguridad del 99,999%. Estamos ante un caso extremadamente raro. Tuviste mucha suerte de salir con vida, Rafa.

Un momento de silencio pausó la conversación. Rafa todavía luchaba por comprender la gravedad de la situación. Entonces, algo cambió en su mirada y sufrió un golpe de realización. Su rostro perdió color, sus ojos se abrieron como platos y su mirada bajó hasta la sábana blanca que le cubría: faltaba algo.

–Mi... ¿dónde está mi pierna?... ¡qué le ha pasado a mi pierna! –gritó Rafa, el miedo dominando su alto tono de voz.

Aurora se quedó en silencio un instante, antes de responder.

–El accidente ocurrió muy rápido y los sistemas de a bordo hicieron lo mejor que pudieron para salvar vuestras vidas. La prioridad del protocolo fue tu supervivencia, pero has sufrido numerosas fracturas, así como la amputación de gran parte de la pierna derecha. Lo siento mucho, Rafa

La voz de Aurora se desvaneció, perdida en el estruendo de la revelación que acababa de golpear a Rafa. La noche parecía ahora más profunda, al igual que la oscuridad que se apoderaba de él, desde dentro. La vida de Rafa había cambiado para siempre, en menos de dos latidos.

Aurora se mantuvo en silencio un instante más. La IA no podía ofrecer el consuelo de un humano, ni las palabras adecuadas para llenar el vacío que había dejado la pérdida de su pierna. Sin embargo, hizo lo que estaba programada para hacer: asistir y apoyar.

–Rafa –dijo Aurora inclinándose sobre él–, entiendo que esto es mucho para procesar. El personal médico hizo todo lo posible durante la operación, pero los daños en la extremidad eran irrecuperables. Se centraron en estabilizarte y garantizar que superaras la noche. Quiero que sepas que aún tienes un camino a seguir y que estamos aquí para ayudarte en todo lo que necesites.

–¿Un camino a seguir? –Rafa murmuró, todavía en shock, con sus palabras apenas audibles– ¿Cómo se supone que voy a seguir adelante sin mi maldita pierna?

–Rafa, sé que esto es devastador y necesitas tiempo para procesarlo –continuó Aurora, su voz tan suave como le permitía su algoritmo–. La pérdida de una extremidad no significa el fin de tu vida, o de tus habilidades. Hay muchas soluciones disponibles, desde prótesis altamente funcionales, hasta las opciones de regeneración avanzada de tejido que...

Rafa levantó su mano izquierda en un movimiento brusco, deteniendo las palabras de Aurora. Su rostro estaba tenso y su mirada perdida en el espacio.

–Déjame sólo, Aurora... necesito... estar a solas.

Aurora asintió, aunque su expresión cordial se mantuvo inmutable.

–Claro, Rafa. Tómate todo el tiempo que necesites. Llámame si tienes preguntas.

Aurora se marchó con discreción y Rafa se quedó solo en la habitación, con sus pensamientos y su dolor, mirando hacia el bullicio y las luces de neón de la ciudad, insensible al mundo que se había derrumbado dentro de esa habitación de hospital.

Unos pisos más arriba, en la zona noble del hospital, la cálida luz de la habitación iluminaba la figura de Belén. Miraba su reflejo en la ventana mientras se abrochaba una nueva y entallada camisa blanca, que su padre había enviado al hospital por dron, junto con un elegante traje negro de sastrería. Cada uno de los movimientos de Belén era preciso y deliberado, como si estuviera tratando de aferrarse a la normalidad, a pesar del torbellino de eventos que había atravesado desde que despertó.

Aurora la observaba desde su posición al lado de la cama. En realidad, Aurora vivía fuera de ese cuerpo de esqueleto metálico, tenía presencia en cada dispositivo electrónico de esa sala y de ese hospital.

–Belén –comenzó el androide–, sé que te estás haciendo muchas preguntas sobre el accidente en este momento.

Belén asintió, con expresión seria, mientras estaba concentrada en encajar las piezas del rompecabezas y los botones de la camisa.

–No puedo entender cómo pudo pasar. Los coches deberían haber evitado la colisión, organizándose entre ellos– dijo mientas miraba de nuevo a Aurora –. Y si el choque ha sido grave, como dijiste antes ¿por qué no tengo ni un sólo rasguño?

Aurora pareció asentir, aunque su rostro no tenía la capacidad para las sutilezas del lenguaje corporal humano.

–Los coches autónomos utilizan una serie de sistemas para minimizar los daños en caso de un incidente inevitable– explicó Aurora mientras proyectaba unos diagramas junto a su holopresencia–. El funcionamiento de esos sistemas se basa en la comparación del ‘Valor de Vida Humana’, o VVH. Cada humano tiene un VVH único, calculado en tiempo real, que refleja una combinación de muchos factores, incluyendo la edad, salud, potencial para la sociedad y más.

–Mi padre me ha hablado alguna vez de esos parámetros, que usan las compañías aseguradoras. Pero ¿cómo pueden haber influido en el accidente? No lo comprendo–dijo Belén sorprendida.

–Los valores VVH de todos los implicados en un accidente, ya sea en un coche o en cualquier otro escenario regulado por IA, se utilizan para tomar decisiones en fracciones de segundo– continuó Aurora. –En situaciones límite, los cálculos de VVH pueden usarse para tomar decisiones que afecten a las acciones de mitigación de daño que se ponen en marcha.

–Estás dando rodeos, Aurora. ¿Qué me quieres decir con todo eso? –preguntó Belén insistente.

–Es difícil de explicar con la información a la que tengo acceso siendo una IA médica –dijo Aurora con su misma voz servicial–. Analizando los datos históricos de VVH, veo que, en el momento del accidente, los cálculos para ti y para el otro pasajero tuvieron un comportamiento irregular.

Belén se quedó en silencio, sus ojos se ampliaron mientras absorbía las implicaciones de las palabras de Aurora.

–¿Qué le ha sucedido al otro pasajero?

Aurora no respondió inmediatamente, como si estuviera ponderando qué responder. Su programación la instaba a no sobresaltar más a su paciente.

–Belén, todo lo que puedo decir es que las IA hicieron todo lo posible para minimizar el daño a los involucrados. El resultado fue, lamentablemente, que el otro ocupante sufrió más daños corporales, con numerosas fracturas y la pérdida de su pierna. Tenía un VVH muy inferior al tuyo.

–¿Y si los cálculos de VVH no hubieran mostrado ese “comportamiento irregular” que dices? –preguntó Belén, casi en un susurro– ¿El otro ocupante podría haber sufrido un daño menor?

–Es probable –dijo Aurora manteniendo la voz tranquila y midiendo sus palabras–. Pero, por lo que puedo deducir de la simulación, en caso de valores VVH similares en ambos, tú habías salido bastante más dañada por el impacto.

Las palabras resonaron en el silencio de la habitación, hundiéndose en el corazón de Belén. Su mirada se desvió hacia la ventana, hacia las luces parpadeantes de la ciudad, mientras procesaba esta nueva información.

–Eso significa que la otra persona ha perdido su pierna por mi culpa –murmuró Belén.

Aurora mantuvo su silencio por un momento, antes de responder.

–Lo ocurrido no fue tu culpa. Fue una desafortunada coincidencia de circunstancias y cálculos. De ninguna manera debes cargar con la culpa de lo que sucedió –dijo la IA recurriendo a su protocolo de gestión del paciente.

Belén ignoró esas palabras. Un sentimiento de culpa comenzaba a anidar en ella. La habitación quedó en silencio por unos segundos, mientras ella continuaba abrochándose su camisa, sus movimientos ahora mecánicos y lentos, con sus pensamientos perdidos en el siguiente movimiento.

–Dime en qué habitación está; quiero ir a verlo –ordenó Belén.

Y prosiguió con su ritual de vestimenta y arreglo.

Rafa estaba tendido en la cama, contemplando el espacio vacío donde solía estar su pierna. Su rostro estaba tenso, lleno de frustración.

–Aurora, dime –su voz era baja pero claramente llena de ira–: ¿Quién es el otro ocupante del vehículo? ¿Cómo está?

La IA no pareció sorprendida por la pregunta. De alguna manera, la esperaba.

–La otra persona accidentada es una mujer de 30 años, natural de esta ciudad, de nombre Belén. También está en el hospital. Ha salido prácticamente ilesa del accidente.

–¿Ilesa? Pero... ¿cómo es eso posible? Me has dicho que el accidente fue muy aparatoso y que los coches han quedado prácticamente destruidos. Necesito que me expliques exactamente lo que pasó.

Aurora se mantuvo en silencio, por un momento, antes de responder. Luego le explicó a Rafa todos los detalles y diagramas del accidente que había compartido con Belén.

–Mi conclusión –finalizó Aurora–, es que las decisiones que tomaron las IA durante el accidente se basaron en vuestros valores VVH ‘actualizados. Estos cálculos se modificaron en los instantes previos al impacto. Lo cual hizo que, en la trayectoria de colisión adoptada, tu coche quedara mucho más expuesto a daños. Y que tú te llevaras la peor parte del impacto.

–¿Se modificaron los VVH? –la voz de Rafa se endureció– ¿Así, de repente y justo antes del accidente? ¿Es eso posible?

La cara sintética de Aurora pareció pausarse por un momento, pero finalmente asintió.

–Lo que he podido analizar es que la determinación matemática de las IA dio la máxima prioridad a garantizar la supervivencia de la otra ocupante. No fue una elección, fue una decisión lógica inevitable, basada en los datos y las variables disponibles en ese momento.

La ira de Rafa llenó la habitación con una tensión palpable.

–¡Entonces las IA me consideraron prescindible! ¿Es eso lo que estás diciendo, Aurora?

–Las IA tomaron la decisión que respetaba los valores de VVH de cada pasajero–, respondió Aurora con calma–. Siguieron el protocolo. Desafortunadamente tú te has llevado la peor parte. Pero sigues vivo, Rafa. Eso es lo importante.

–¡Seguir vivo no me consuela! Apenas puedo permitirme un seguro básico, ¡como para pensar en qué va a ser de mí a partir de ahora sin poder andar! ¡Vete y déjame en paz, maldita máquina!

Aurora miró a Rafa con la máxima simpatía que un robot podía emitir. Y permaneció así varios segundos, como si alguien hubiera interrumpido su programa. Después, se marchó discretamente.

Rafa quedó absorto con sus pensamientos y su ira. Las palabras de Aurora resonaban con un eco siniestro. Había sido sacrificado, reducido a nada más que una variable en un cálculo frío y despiadado, que alguien había modificado justo antes del accidente para hacerlo más injusto. Y todo lo que quedaba ahora era la impotencia y la furia.

Pasaron un par de minutos, o quizás más. Rafa había perdido la noción del tiempo. Entonces, un sonido mecánico le sacó de su trance.

Cuando Rafa miró hacia la puerta de la habitación, que se había abierto, vio a una mujer de carne y hueso, que parecía haberse materializado desde otro mundo.

–Hola...–comenzó la mujer, su voz empañada por la incomodidad que sentía–. Soy Belén. La... la otra accidentada.

Sus palabras flotaron en el aire, cargadas de implicaciones no dichas. A continuación, se mordió el labio inferior, buscando cómo continuar la incómoda conversación.

Era evidente para Rafa que ella pertenecía a una esfera social completamente diferente. Ella estaba allí, en la puerta de su habitación, envuelta en una sofisticada elegancia que parecía discordante en el lugar. Era hermosa, sí, pero no era sólo eso. Era una especie de perfección pulida, refinada. Su pelo brillante y cuidadosamente peinado, sus ojos claros y despejados, a pesar de la hora temprana. Su ropa rezumando calidad y estilo. A pesar de haber estado en el mismo accidente hacía sólo unas horas, ella parecía imperturbable, como si su mundo estuviera protegido por una barrera invisible. Aun así, había algo en su mirada, un matiz de preocupación, o quizás vulnerabilidad, que Rafa encontró inesperado.

Belén dio unos pocos pasos hacia la cama, con cautela. Precisamente cuando iba a continuar hablando, el tono de una llamada entrante interrumpió su intento. Con una rápida disculpa, Belén revisó su comunicador de muñeca, con el ceño fruncido en confusión.

–Es mi padre..., –se excusó, desconectando la llamada sin responder–. Insiste en que me vaya. Pero yo… necesitaba conocerte. Y hablar contigo sobre el accidente.

Rafa la miró, a pesar de la desorientación y el malestar que sentía, se las arregló para asentir. Tenía todo el interés del mundo en conocer a la persona que las máquinas habían decidido dejar intacta, a su costa.

Belén comenzó a hacer preguntas. Preguntas sobre el accidente, sobre las decisiones de la IA. Rafa, aunque reticente al comienzo, comenzó a abrirse y a compartir sus ideas. Los fragmentos de información que tenía y las teorías que había formulado con Aurora comenzaron a aflorar. A medida que hablaban, las piezas del rompecabezas empezaron a encajar.

Una verdad perturbadora terminó de formarse: los cálculos del VVH habían sido manipulados en el último momento, para priorizar la vida de Belén sobre la de Rafa. Se produjo un incómodo silencio en la habitación.

–Mi padre es el presidente de la mayor compañía de seguros del país –reveló Belén mirando a Rafa–. Y yo soy titular del seguro de accidentes más caro que ofrecen, un producto al que sólo puede acceder un 1% de la población.

Rafa asintió, pensativo.

–Tu padre se aseguró de que tuvieras el mejor desenlace posible en caso de accidente. Tú y todos los miembros de la élite. Eso es lo que ofrecen esos seguros ‘exclusivos’–dijo con desprecio desde la cama.

Belén se quedó en silencio, pensando en las implicaciones. Luego habló de repente:

–¿Cómo es posible que puedan hacer eso? ¿Es legal? ¿Es ético? –Pensó en voz alta.

De nuevo, se produjo el incómodo silencio. Fue roto por el tono de un nuevo mensaje en la muñeca de Belén. Esta vez Belén lo leyó.

–Mi padre está llegando. Ha decidido venir en persona. Debo marcharme. No debe saber que he venido a verte –declaró Belén con una nota de miedo en su voz.

Rafa, sorprendido, miró a Belén.

–No dejaré que esta injusticia quede así.

–Me gustaría ayudarte, pero… no sé cómo hacerlo –dijo Belén precipitada mientras miraba a un lado y al otro, buscando opciones.

–Gracias –comenzó Rafa, con una severidad en su voz que nunca había mostrado–. Pero no necesito tu ayuda ‘exclusiva’. Lo que necesito es ‘justicia’.

Belén se apretó las manos, sin saber qué más decir. Su mirada se posó en la cama de Rafa y, por primera vez, la gravedad de lo que había ocurrido realmente la golpeó.

–Puedo... puedo pagar la reconstrucción de tu pierna. En este hospital hacen las mejores piernas sintéticas de la ciudad.

–¿De verdad crees que eso solucionará todo? –interrumpió Rafa, como filo cortante–¿Crees que una prótesis hará que esta injusticia desaparezca? ¿Y la próxima vez que me pase algo por ser ciudadano de segunda? ¿también me ayudarás y pagarás mi factura de hospital? ¿Y si la siguiente vez muero para que se salve otro rico?

Belén no supo qué responder. Abrió precipitadamente su interfaz holográfico de muñeca y movió los dedos con rapidez en el aire, lanzando comandos al dispositivo. Instantes después, el dispositivo de Rafa emitió un pitido y mostró una notificación de pago recibido.

–Déjame al menos que me encargue de los costes de tu prótesis. Si fuera necesario más dinero, diré al hospital que me lo notifiquen.

Rafa soltó una risa amarga y miró a Belén con desprecio.

–No puedes resolverlo todo con tu cuenta corriente, Belén. No en la forma que importa. No puedes devolverme lo que he perdido esta noche: mi libertad, mi igualdad.

Belén siguió en silencio. Las palabras de Rafa se clavaban en su corazón. Sabía que él tenía razón, que lo sucedido esta noche era la confirmación de que había ciudadanos de primera y de segunda, diferenciados hasta en los algoritmos programados en las IA.

–Lo siento, Rafa. De verdad, lo siento. Todo esto es muy injusto…

Se alejó dos pasos hacia atrás, mientras cancelaba otra llamada entrante.

–Tengo que irme ya –dijo con prisa.

Rafa asintió, con una expresión de resignación cubriendo su rostro.

Belén caminó rápidamente hacia la puerta, sus tacones haciendo eco en el silencio de la habitación. Justo antes de salir, se detuvo y se volvió hacia Rafa.

–Ten cuidado, Rafa. Mi padre es una persona poderosa. Nadie se atreve a llevarle la contraria –dijo haciendo una pausa–. Ni siquiera yo misma.

–No te preocupes por mí. Me las arreglaré, gracias a tu limosna. Dios de lo pague.

Con esas últimas palabras resonando en la habitación, Belén salió al pasillo, temblorosa, respirando profundamente para aliviar la tensión vivida ahí dentro. Le costó un gran esfuerzo recuperar la compostura, ponerse su máscara de indiferencia y reanudar el paso firme y decidido que la caracterizaba.

Rafa se quedó solo en su habitación, mirando a través del ventanal cómo la ciudad despertaba. La luz del amanecer, proyectándose a través de la ventana, parecía burlarse de él: cada rayo de sol marcaba su incompleta silueta bajo la sábana y le recordaba la dureza de su situación. El mundo giraba, indiferente a su a su pérdida y a su dolor.

Más allá de la pérdida física, un amargo conocimiento le atormentaba. La sociedad, gobernada ahora por sistemas automáticos y algoritmos seguía plagada de las habituales trampas y favoritismos de los poderosos. Pero ahora era más injusta que nunca, pues toda esa injusticia ocurría de manera invisible en las mentes de las IA, que tomaban decisiones de vida o muerte de humanos, en cuestión de dos latidos.

Ya en la calle, Belén se dirigió al coche negro que la estaba esperando. Antes de subir, lanzó una última mirada hacia atrás, hacia el imponente edificio del hospital. Había una especie de despedida en esa mirada, una extraña mezcla de pesar y de culpa.

Se subió al coche y saludó a su padre con normalidad e inocencia. Hablaron de la importancia de la salud y de lo afortunados que eran por seguir sanos y salvos. Y de lo apretada que tenían ambos la agenda esa semana.

–Hija, no sé lo que has hecho en el hospital esta noche, pero tu indicador VVH acaba de subir 20 puntos de golpe.

–Hice un donativo desinteresado, Padre –dijo Belén intentando no darle importancia.

–Bien jugado, hija. Te pone a tiro para esa campaña a la alcaldía que tenemos que discutir la semana que viene con el asesor político.

El vehículo autónomo se adentró en el tráfico matutino a gran velocidad, convirtiéndose en un punto más entre la multitud de puntos, en un latido más del pulso de la ciudad, finamente controlado por las máquinas.

EL ORERO PROFESOR

“Se lo pregunto con todo respeto, ¿si es cierto que cada mes sale de la montaña a vender las dos a tres pepitas de oro que dice encuentra en promedio, como es que vive tan mal? …lo digo porque usted está vestido con harapos y parece mendigo”.

Había dudado todo el camino, “¿será muy grosera la pregunta?” Pedro no la hizo con saña o queriendo humillar a Elías. Había dos alternativas: o Elías era un narrador exquisito y entretenido, dotado de una imaginación creativa y leyendera o Pedro era un cínico petulante que ya no creía en nada. O sea, Elías, o era un mentiroso o un educador, pero Pedro solo lo sabría si hacía la pregunta.

El viaje a la casa era largo, tomaba al menos cinco horas. Por lo general Pedro había trabajado muy duro, durante los tres a cuatro días en que se quedaba en la finca, ya sea vacunando, marcando, escamotando, castrando, apartando, arriando ganado o caminando con el cuidador, revisando el estado de los potreros, recorriendo las cercas viejas para ver si necesitaban reparaciones o trazando las nuevas que debían construirse. Dormirse mientras manejaba de regreso era un peligro latente. Montaba en el carro a quien quiera que se lo pidiera. No lo hacía por generosidad sino como forma de mantenerse despierto: una buena conversada era la mejor prevención contra el sueño … y un accidente.

Elías estaba sentado en la vera del camino, apenas a unos diez kilómetros de la finca. Aunque su apariencia sugería peligro, Pedro no dudó en detener el carro y ofrecerle el ride.

Prácticamente toda su ropa estaba cubierta de barro seco; un sombrero de lona sucio y deshilachado cubría un pelo largo y desordenado; una barba irregular, mitad negra mitad canosa, rodeaba una boca con pocos y amarillentos dientes. Se amarraba el pantalón con una suerte de bejuco y llevaba en la espalda un saco al cual le daba forma de salveque, atando, con tiras de burío no bien trenzadas, las dos puntas del fondo a la boca del saco y montándolo sobre sus dos hombros. En la mano llevaba un cuchillo de 28 pulgadas metido en una vieja cubierta de cuero. Es posible que no se hubiese bañado en semanas, pero Pedro no sería capaz de percibir la posible hediondez, porque, aunque el si se bañaba todos los días para acostarse, al siguiente día se ponía la misma ropa, mojada y sucia con barro, boñiga y la sangre que le había pringado de la escamoteada o la castrada. Así que estaba igualmente hediondo: no sería capaz de notar algún cambio de olores en la cabina del pickup cuando subió Elías.

“¿Para dónde va?” “Si me lleva a Rincón, ahí puedo tomar bus, primo”. “Ok”, respondió Pedro. Ante la apariencia de su pasajero, prefería conocerlo un poco antes de anunciarle que estaba dispuesto a llevarlo hasta que sus rumbos dejaran de coincidir. Pedro siempre andaba armado, así que miedo no tenía, pero era mejor evitar problemas.

Como era su costumbre, Pedro soltó una batería de preguntas tan pronto como Elías subió al carro. Elías contestaba con evasivas. Tal y como se lo confesó más tarde, temía que Pedro fuese autoridad, aunque lo dudaba por la suciedad de su ropa y su vehículo. “Las autoridades preguntan mucho pero siempre andan como un ajito … está raro esto”, fue su reflexión.

Pero pronto tomó confianza, cuando el mismo hizo unas pocas preguntas a Pedro sobre la razón de su viaje y detalles del trabajo de la finca, los cuales le convencieron que era finquero y no autoridad policial. Además, Pedro le confesó que no lo montaba al carro por generosidad ni para cobrarle pasaje, sino para evitar dormirse, “así que hable todo lo que pueda”. Ambos sonrieron. Escasos tres kilómetros de viaje conjunto y ya confiaban el uno en el otro: Pedro no temía que fuese un delincuente y Elías no temía que Pedro, a quién llamaba “primo”, fuese la ley.

Fue así como Elías, por medio de respuestas a las preguntas detalladas de Pedro, fabricó una fascinante, ordenada y creíble historia. La narración versaba sobre la búsqueda y el lavado del oro selva adentro, cómo se conseguía comida, cómo se dormía, los peligros que presentaban los jaguares y las culebras y otros oreros o la llegada de ladrones que llegaban para robarles. “Pero el peligro más grande era que nos descubrieran los guardaparques o la policía … a un ladrón o una culebra le puedo meter un machetazo, pero si le hago un rasguño a una autoridad me embarco en serio”. “¿Entonces que hace?”, preguntó Pedro. “Si vienen dos a tres uno se arriesga y les ofrece todas las pepitas que tenga para que lo dejen tranquilo, pero si viene un grupo ya de seis o siete, lo mejor es huir jungla adentro y esconderse por varios días”. Luego contó, con minucioso detalle y un orden narrativo lineal y claro, las dificultades de vivir en sigilo, sin utensilios de cocina, ni plástico para guarecerse y “solo con la 28”, en las profundidades desconocidas de la jungla.

En Rincón Pedro estacionó el carro frente a la cantina y le dijo “aquí siempre me tomo una birra con boca de piangua fresca, ¿quiere acompañarme? Si quiere deje el salveque en el carro”. A la birra dijo que si, pero bajó el salveque. En la cantina había otras personas, no quiso hablar mucho. Pedro lo notó y dejó de hacerle preguntas. Al terminar la cerveza, Pedro le contó que tenía que pasar por Chacarita, que si iba en esa dirección con gusto lo llevaba.

Y realmente lo hacía con gusto. Los cuentos de Elías eran extraordinariamente entretenidos, fluidos, absorbentes y aparentaban un conocimiento al detalle de la vida y las técnicas del coligallero. “Este vago tiene amigos o parientes en la actividad, pues aparenta muy bien saber del tema”, pensó Pedro, “pero es el mentiroso más fantasioso ¡y el mejor antídoto contra el sueño!, que he conocido”.

Pedro no le creía nada y con razón. Elías le había contado que “me toma entre tres y cuatro semanas, máximo cinco, encontrar mínimo dos pepitas como del tamaño de la uña del dedo gordo del pie y de ahí para arriba. Si en cuatro semanas ya tengo dos pepitas y algo de polvo salgo a vender; si pasan cuatro semanas y no he encontrado ninguna, me quedo y apenas encuentro la primera salgo”. Y agregó, “pero es muy raro que me valla tan mal”.

“Este me ve cara de menso” pensaba Pedro mientras lo escuchaba; “¡con esa apariencia estoy seguro de que no ha visto ni en foto una pepita de oro!”.

Elías agradeció con efusividad la cerveza, casi como pidiendo la segunda, y dijo que sí le ayudaría mucho si lo levaba hasta Chacarita. Pedro notó que quería la segunda birra, pero optó por regresar al carro, primero porque no quería derrotar el objetivo del ride que era mantenerse despierto, lo cual ante su falta de costumbre podría ser el resultado de tomarse otra cerveza y, segundo, porque aún quedaba una pizca de desconfianza y temió que con una segunda cerveza a Elías le brotaran los impulsos propios de su apariencia.

Tan pronto como se reinició el viaje, Elías recuperó su elocuente y agradable narrativa. Ante las preguntas de Pedro, habló de su origen, sus padres, las mujeres con las que había convivido, su aspiración a ser finquero de ganado desde que trabajó en una hacienda en Guanacaste y aprendió las diferentes tareas. No tenía hijos, aunque “estoy seguro de que he dejado regados unos cuantos”. El trabajo de orero en Corcovado era mucho más duro y riesgoso que el de peón de finca, pero “en la selva nadie me manda”.

Intentó preguntar, pero recibió respuestas cortas y escuetas, pues a Pedro le interesaba que siguiera hablando y mintiendo pues lo hacía de manera muy agradable y amena. “No lo veo como mentiroso; sino como novelista; el miente hablando, el novelista escribiendo, pero su enemistad con la verdad y su reverencia por la ficción es la misma”, pensó Pedro, ya a medio camino entre Rincón y Chacarita.

Y fue ahí donde, ya con más confianza y una birra en el sistema, Pedro se atrevió a hacer la pregunta que rondaba por su cabeza desde que este harapiento le contó que por mes vendía entre dos y tres pepitas de oro y algo de polvo.

“Tengo que hacerle una pregunta Elías; espero que no se moleste, pero no quiero irme con la duda. Esté seguro de que la he pasado muy bien desde que se subió al carro y ese sentimiento no cambiará cualquiera que sea su respuesta”.  “Tranquilo, primo, tírela”.

Con la misma espontaneidad y fluidez que había abordado las numerosas preguntas que Pedro ya le había hecho, Elías, sin inmutarse contestó: “Vea primo, usted me ha preguntado por todo, pero no sobre mis vicios. Como detective usted no se gana ni una taza de café ralo”. Aunque el tono seguía siendo afable, Pedro dudó de si estaba molesto por la pregunta. Después de todo, decirle a alguien harapiento y endilgarle parecido a un mendigo podría ser un insulto, aunque se antecediera por una solicitud de respeto. Pero por lo que siguió, Pedro concluyó que no había resentimiento alguno.

“Para empezar, usted me ve harapiento ahora pero mañana en la tarde me presentaré ante las damas hecho un ajito, con buenos cachos, bien rasurado y peinado y oloroso a perfume de calidad, comprado en la frontera. Ahora estoy así pero mañana me verá como un oficinista. Pero no soy ni mendigo ni oficinista, soy Elías hoy y lo seré mañana. ¡Además, usted también está bien cochinito; si no fuera porque tiene carro alguien podría pensar que es compañero mío! Es más, primo, vamos sin el carro a buscar mujeres, así como estamos, para que vea que a usted no le va mejor que a mí”.

No sé si esa era su intención, pero había fabricado su respuesta de manera tan convincente que lo tomé como una leccioncita.

“Pero primo”, prosiguió, ahora si con alguna pausa, “si lo que quiere saber es si soy pobre o rico, le voy a decir que tampoco se puede contestar fácil. Yo soy rico por dos semanas, luego paso a ser pobre por un mes, para volver a ser rico otras dos semanas. Así va mi vida”

“No le entiendo”.

“¡Qué me va a entender!, por eso déjeme explicarle lo de mis vicios. Como le dije antes, yo salgo cuando tengo dos pepitas, eso es como una vez por mes. Las vendo en Golfito”

“¿A quién?

“Un viejo tagarote me compra todo lo que le venda y él se lo vende a la oficina que tiene el Banco Central ahí en Golfito. Ahí compran todo y lo pagan bien”

“¿Y por qué no lo lleva usted al Banco y lo vende directamente?

“Porque ante la primera pregunta - ¿dónde consiguió el oro? -, termino en la cárcel. En Costa Rica tocar a Corcovado es más delito que cogerse una virgen. Al viejo no le preguntan nada porque él dice que tiene papeles o una patente como comerciante de oro”.

Una vez más sus respuestas eran informadas y creíbles. “Por lo menos un hermano si había sido orero”, pensé.

“Ok, pero, aun así, usted si recibe buen dinero por el oro. ¿Qué hace? ¿Lo guarda en un banco, lo invierte?”

“Ahí viene lo de los vicios y mis dos semanas de ricachón: lo gasto en guaro y putas. Paso dos semanas, a veces me alcanza hasta para una semana más, con pinta de oficinista, encamando putas, emborrachándome y regalando guaro y putas a mis amigos”.

“¿En San José o dónde?”

“Primo, las mejores putas del mundo están en Golfito, en Neily y en la frontera. Y son baratas; con solo el pasaje a San José pago por dos sin salir de la zona”.

“¿Pero algo ahorra?”

“Nada, primo, más bien, con frecuencia, tengo que pedir prestado para los pasajes de regreso a Rincón y para comprar la comida, los fósforos y todo lo que tengo que llevar a Corcovado”

“Ahora entendí lo de ser rico dos semanas y pobre un mes.”

“Ve que tengo razón. En el mes que soy pobre parezco mendigo, paso cubierto de barro, como muy mal, trabajo como chino y de mujeres solo recordarlas y jalármela”

Prosiguió contando, con su magnética e informada narrativa, la vida del borracho y las prostitutas. Pedro concluyó que sus exageraciones sobre el licor que se tomaba y las mujeres con que se apareaba en dos semanas, o sobre su generosidad con los chiquitos de esas mujeres y con sus amigos, no se originaban en un deseo de ostentar; “es su capacidad creativa y su imaginación de novelista la que lo lleva por esa ruta”.

El camino se había hecho corto; a Pedro el sueño no le había llegado ni a la categoría de embrión. Faltaba poco para llegar a Chacarita, donde Pedro doblaría hacia el norte por la carretera interamericana y Elías tomaría un bus hacia el sur, a sus predios de ricachón oficinista.

Unos cincuenta metros antes de la intersección Pedro detuvo el carro para que Elías, el mentiroso o novelista más logrado y agradable con que Pedro se hubiese encontrado, bajara. En lugar de bajar comenzó a soltar la boca del sucio saco que le servía de salveque. Metió la mano hasta el fondo como intentando buscar algo. Para entonces Pedro ya le tenía confianza. Estaba seguro de que no estaba buscando un arma o que tuviese una mala intención, aunque le pasó por la mente. Por fin sacó un pañuelo, de esos grandes y coloridos que los bailarines de música folclórica utilizan. Era un mazacote arrugado y amarrado con sus mismas puntas. Con dificultad logró soltarlo y comenzó otra vez a buscar algo. Pedro pensó, “está buscando dinero para pagar el bus y antes de despedirnos quiere saber si le falta para pedírmelo prestado. Por supuesto que con gusto se lo daré”.

Por fin encontró lo que buscaba. En lugar de pedir dinero, dijo: “tome primo, esta pepita, llévesela de recuerdo”

Pedro miró la pepita la sintió en sus manos, sin duda era oro.

Un calor profundo circuló por su cuerpo, la cara se le puso colorada como un tomate, no podía soportar la vergüenza. Después de todo Elías si era orero y todo lo que le había contado era cierto.

En ese momento Pedro se percató que, además de un orero diestro, al frente tenía un profesor brillante. Le había enseñado sobre la actividad del coligallero, la vida en la selva, el comercio artesanal de oro, el mundo del licor y los burdeles, el periplo del que no aspira a acumular riqueza, y, en particular, le había hecho percatarse que, en la práctica, no había entendido, por más que había admirado, al Tolkien de “no todo lo que reluce es oro, ni toda la gente errante anda perdida”.

Pedro se negó a recibir la pepita. Habían dos razones. Era injusto, ante lo difícil que era encontrarlas, aceptar este acto generoso de Elías. Y, más importante, no podía recibir algo que se originaba en una verdad que él había juzgado, guiado por apariencias, como mentira.

Elías insistió, “vea primo, para usted significa algo, para mi es solo menos borrachera y menos putas y una semana menos de ricachón. No me bajo del carro hasta que me la reciba”

El final del experimento

Hacía días que volábamos hacia el norte. Según avanzábamos la comida escaseaba y presentíamos que la situación no iba a mejorar. Aluf, el guía, lo sabía, lo sabíamos todos, pero ninguno osaba cuestionarle. Quedaba una hora de luz y hacía rato que Aluf buscaba un lugar donde pasar la noche. Habíamos sobrevolado un bosque de hayas, era el lugar adecuado, pero el guía lo había desechado por estar envuelto en una densa bruma azul. Sin embargo, más allá se dibujaba un páramo extenso, infinito, más peligroso aún que la niebla. Aluf giró en redondo hacia el sur y la bandada fue detrás como un solo cuerpo. Según íbamos acercándonos al bosque, nos llegó la fragancia fresca de las hayas y esto reconfortó al grupo que aumentó la velocidad ante la idea de un descanso, el primero en varios días. La bandada entró en la nube. Era una masa espesa, gelatinosa, que nos empapó inmediatamente el cuerpo, las alas y mantener la formación se hizo agotador. Costaba mantener los ojos abiertos por la condensación de líquido y abrirlos no servía de nada pues la densidad de la niebla era tal, que apenas podías ver al compañero que volaba a tu lado, solo una masa blanca y fría que iba penetrando en tu cuerpo convirtiendo tu corazón en una sustancia gélida.

Aluf comenzó el descenso. El grupo mantenía la cohesión sin visión alguna siguiendo las vibraciones del aire. Volar en cuña no es caprichoso, es la forma de realizar el mínimo esfuerzo, la forma en la que los más débiles de la bandada como yo, pueden seguir al grupo manteniéndose en el valle de la ola que genera la formación al hendir el aire. Éramos animales marinos, animales alados, volábamos y pescábamos zambulléndonos a veces hasta quince metros en el mar a velocidades de vértigo. Si de algo sabíamos era de ritmos y ondas, de vibraciones y olas. El agua y el aire se comportan de manera similar, pero a velocidades distintas. El dominio de esos ritmos es nuestra manera de sobrevivir y así está escrito en nuestros genes. Aire y agua nos hablan íntimamente, pero la niebla es otra cosa. De repente, perdí el rastro, la vibración de la bandada. Hacía un segundo estaba en ella y un instante más tarde lo había perdido. Miré a mi alrededor sin poder ver nada. Lancé un fuerte graznido, pero hasta el sonido parecía ser absorbido por la densidad de la bruma. Escuché una respuesta a mi izquierda, si el giro no lo hacía en la dirección correcta perdería al grupo. Bajé las plumas de la cola e instantáneamente mi cuerpo se desplazó decenas de metros a una velocidad vertiginosa. Volví a graznar. Esta vez la respuesta fue más lejana, creí sentirla unos metros más abajo y me lancé hacia el origen del sonido como si fuera a zambullirme el océano. Nada. Estaba perdiendo altura muy deprisa y aquí el aire era demasiado denso, aun así, mantuve el rumbo peligrosamente tratando de encontrar alguna vibración, la pista de un volador. Y de repente, perdí la suspensión bajo el peso de la niebla y caí a plomo. El primer impacto fue en la cabeza, abrí las alas y dejé que mi cuerpo absorbiera el golpe relajándolo al máximo. La vegetación espesa de los árboles frenó mi caída y me pude recomponer en una rama de un tejo gigante, probablemente milenario. Tenía un corte profundo cerca del ojo. La sangre que manaba con profusión no me dejaba ver. Oteé el aire. Nada. Estaba perdida. Perdida y sola, una situación sobre la que planea la muerte, que siempre ronda a los de nuestra especie.

Sin embargo, no sentí miedo alguno. Hacía ya varios inviernos que mi tiempo se había cumplido, yo era un volador raro, había vivido demasiado. Todos lo sabían y a veces les sorprendía mirándome con una mezcla de curiosidad, respeto y recelo. No sé por qué sigo viva. Soy muy vieja, más de lo que nadie recuerda y observo el mundo desde otro lugar a como lo hacía cuando mi cuerpo aun tenía vigor. Ahora ya no vuelo, en realidad, apenas tengo energía para batir mis alas y simplemente me deslizo, fluyo apoyada en la corriente. Nadie sabe como lo hago, en realidad, no lo hago yo, se hace solo, simplemente sucede.

Fui agua. En un huevo fui líquida, solidificándome, haciéndome viscosa y luego sólida hasta cristalizar en estos huesos huecos, firmes, duros y ligeros. Mis huesos llevan la huella del aire formados en ondas helicoidales, la identidad del viento, de los torbellinos, de las térmicas, del aire fresco de los bosques, del sofoco cálido del desierto y del giro enloquecido de los tornados. Fui agua, en mi la furia de las olas que agitan mis sueños. Soy aire. Aire en mis huesos vacíos, en mis pulmones, aire que percibo con cada pelo de mis plumas, cada leve vibración, cada cambio de dirección y de temperatura. Vivo en esa vibración y entiendo el viento desde algún lugar de mi cuerpo.

Busco el agua, pues agua soy, más agua estructurada, agua que ha vivido y que guarda una memoria. He conocido los continentes, los océanos. He migrado durante años más allá de los trópicos en peligrosas aventuras equinocciales; he conocido tormentas de arena que nos alejaron de nuestra ruta cientos de kilómetros y diezmaron la bandada; he cabalgado huracanes en el círculo polar antártico donde no se pone el sol y donde los ciclones giran y giran durante semanas sin que continente alguno los detenga, volando sin descanso, sin tocar tierra alguna, siguiendo al mítico guía Alarion, mi padre. He oído bramar a los cuarenta rugientes a través del cabo donde el mar grita hasta ensordecerte. Me he saciado de krill buceando junto a las grandes ballenas grises, mientras se movían majestuosamente mirándonos con ese ojo inexpresivo que parece encerrar un conocimiento misterioso. En cada poro, en cada célula, la profundidad y el salitre del océano resuenan en mi al tono de la luna llena, como cada gota de agua sobre el planeta. Formo parte de ese circuito, la sangre de la Tierra. A veces, mientras vuelo me pierdo en esa inmensidad, siento que ya no soy yo, sino algo etéreo y es entonces cuando siento que, como el aire, como el agua, carezco de una forma propia.

Creo haberlo visto todo, sin embargo, nunca vi un viento como este que vino del norte. Fue en aquel entonces cuando las cosas cambiaron. Aluf el guía, se volvió sombrío, abandonó a su pareja y el contacto con la bandada. Si alguien se le acercaba lo atacaba con furia. Sé lo que le ocurre. Ha perdido el rastro, la percepción de la vibración. Un guía que no sabe donde está la estrella, donde está el océano, ya no es un guía. No es nada, y él lo sabe. Días atrás, después de cruzar el estrecho, los huracanes del norte nos llevaron cientos de kilómetros tierra adentro a una zona de pantanos. Recuerdo haber cruzado una mirada con él y durante un instante pude ver el miedo en sus ojos. El miedo de no saber a donde nos lleva, no sabe donde va, esta olvidando quién es y su propósito, y se que siente la amenaza de un fracaso que conducirá al clan hacia la muerte. Aluf está perdido. Las líneas, las vibraciones que han guiado a nuestra especie durante milenios han desaparecido. Lo sé porque yo también he dejado de sentirlas. Pero esto es solo un síntoma más de lo que está sucediendo. Allí abajo, la superficie de los pantanos brilla como un mar metálico, son cadáveres de peces que flotan a millares. No se pueden comer, apestan a ácido, ni siquiera se corrompen.

La sangre de mi frente se ha secado y la bruma parece estar disipándose dejando ver entre sus jirones breves atisbos de un cielo carmesí. Levanté la vista y entonces los vi. Cuatro voladores surcaban el cielo. Era mi hijo Gris y los de su camada, los perdimos al cruzar el estrecho. Lancé un fuerte graznido e inmediatamente modificaron el rumbo. Ellos también andaban desorientados y buscaban la bandada. Volví a graznar hasta que me localizaron. Volaron sobre mi invitándome a unirme a su grupo. Abrí mis alas y en ese instante supe que no podría volar. Llevaba varios días sin alimento, apenas tenía fuerzas para moverme y el aire estaba quieto, pesado, lleno de agua, sería incapaz de sostenerme.

Vi el ojo de Gris escrutándome con atención mientras describía un amplio círculo sobre mí cabeza. Había comprendido. Al completar el giro encararon de nuevo el norte organizándose en una cuña perfecta y repentinamente reparé en la belleza de su vuelo que me conmovió profundamente sabiendo que nunca volvería verlos. Formulé un deseo de protección que voló con ellos y los vi perderse tras los tonos dorados con el que el atardecer coloreaba la parte alta de la bruma. Los pájaros no lloramos, pero este sería un buen momento para hacerlo.

Así que este era el lugar. Sobre este tejo milenario. Tenía sentido, probablemente él también ya está fuera de su tiempo. He visto morir ya a decenas de mis camadas y a mi compañero después de haber volado junto a mi durante más de cuarenta años. Por qué seguía viva era un misterio. Pero parece que mi tiempo ha llegado. Apoyé mi cuerpo contra el tronco del tejo y creí sentir su lento latido milenario, un ritmo al que podría acompasarme y cerré los ojos. Inmediatamente una forma de inconsciencia se fue abatiendo sobre mi liberándome de la pesadumbre de estar viva e ingresando en un sopor que no era doloroso, sino amable, casi placentero.

Algo me estaba ahogando, algo atenazaba mi cuello y desperté angustiada. Abrí los ojos esperando sin temor alguno ver las férreas mandíbulas de algún predador cerrándose sobre mi garganta. Pero lo que vi fueron los ojos de Gris junto a los míos. Estaba introduciendo aceite en mi buche. Un aceite esencial que los voladores llevamos dentro y con el que alimentamos a nuestras crías. Me dejé alimentar. Lo hice por él, no por mí. Yo ya había cerrado mis vínculos con la vida. No esperaba nada.

Gris me miró expectante. Yo le dediqué una mirada llena de compasión y agradecimiento. Vi la nobleza en sus ojos, la misma de su abuelo Alarion y me sentí orgullosa de haber cumplido mi papel, había sido un eslabón digno en la cadena. Mi hijo era magnífico, noble, un bellísimo volador. Esta bien, volaría una vez más, esta será la última y moriré en el aire, lo haré por él y por su estirpe, que es la mía.

Hacía días que caminábamos hacia el norte. La comida escaseaba. El grupo murmuraba, estaban descontentos, pero callaban cuando los miraba. No me gusta que hablen, no sirve de nada y solo trae problemas.

Soy el guía del clan y aún me tienen respeto. Aparento saber que es lo que hago y hacia donde les dirijo, pero la verdad es que hace tiempo que les hago vagar sin otro rumbo más que el que el azar impone para que no se detengan y caigan en el abandono. Me he separado de ellos y rechazo su compañía y al menos esa distancia me protege y les protege, se que sin mí habrían muerto hace tiempo.

Cada día pienso que la situación no puede ser peor, pero me equivoco. Hace tiempo que hemos cruzado una línea más allá de la cual las cosas son irreversibles. Solo espero que el momento en que suceda, sea rápido, que no sufran innecesariamente. Mi parte no me importa, fui entrenado para guiar al clan, pero nunca sospeché que sería yo el guía que les conduciría hacia la muerte.

Fui iniciado en la época de la hecatombe y después de las olas radioactivas, aun así, entonces aún había esperanza. Llegaban noticias, mas bien rumores que, más allá de los trópicos, había un territorio libre de ácidos y nos preparamos para la diáspora. Espero que el grupo del sur haya sido más afortunado. Me fue entregado un conocimiento transmitido durante generaciones que en mi será un conocimiento intransitivo, ya que morirá conmigo. Somos los últimos humanos hasta donde yo sé.

Somos un ensayo fallido. No hemos tenido tiempo suficiente, nuestra estupidez e ignorancia va a terminar con el proyecto humano antes de que este experimento pueda completarse. Perdidos en la mezquina fantasía de ser los minúsculos y vanidosos dioses de nuestro pequeño drama individual, no hemos entendido que el rumbo es precisamente el opuesto. Solo la actitud de entrega absoluta es la única posible para estar en perfecta armonía con lo real. Eso lo sabemos ahora, cuando ya es demasiado tarde. Fallamos en desarrollar una conciencia como especie, a pesar de que si lo hicieron otras antes que nosotros. Si, hubo otros experimentos de conciencia antes que el humano. La frase “heredarás la Tierra” ha sido pronunciada con anterioridad. Pero nosotros no hemos conseguido comprender que el organismo es la comunidad, la colmena, el hormiguero, a pesar de que su ejemplo ha estado conviviendo durante milenios con nosotros. Basta echar una mirada a un colectivo de abejas o termitas, para comprender que la supervivencia consiste en la entrega de cada individuo a un bien mayor. El trascender las barreras de nuestros pequeños egos y entregarse al otro, era el secreto de la supervivencia. Las abejas, las hormigas, las termitas… si concluyeron satisfactoriamente su experimento y este aprendizaje cristalizó en eso que llamamos instinto. A nosotros nos han faltado tiempo para entender que somos, en tanto son los demás. Los filósofos de esas otras especies mas exitosas seguro que concluyeron: eres, luego existo.

No puedo recordar cuanto tiempo hace que vuelo con Gris y su camada hacia el norte. La falta de alimento y la extenuación me ha sumido en un estado de aturdimiento en el que he dejado de sentir mi cuerpo. No puedo mover las alas, no vuelo, simplemente fluyo al rebufo de Gris, sostenida en una brisa que a veces huele a bosque y a veces a ceniza.

En las últimas horas el aire se ha ido enrareciendo, pero no hay donde ir. Allá donde miramos nos rodea esta nube verdosa. He visto muchos fuegos, he olido muchos humos, pero nunca uno como este, pálido, ácido, irrespirable, te cierra la tráquea.

Aunque hace un par de días que tratamos de evitar esa nube, desde hace unas horas volamos desesperadamente tratando de huir de ella, pues parece invadirlo todo. Gris esta girando de nuevo y me mira implorante tratando de encontrar en mi una respuesta, pero no la hay, no hay donde ir. Finalmente, la nube nos da alcance e inmediatamente los ojos comienzan a escocer por la acidez de este aire. A mi derecha cae el más pequeño del grupo, un volador muy joven, casi una cría, que se desploma al vacío.

No habrá más voladores, será este un mundo al que ya no deseo pertenecer, un mundo pobre, sin especies, al que ya no echaré de menos. Bien, ha llegado mi momento de entregarme al infinito, me hice una con el viento. Sentí como mi cuerpo era penetrado por el aire por todos sus poros y se transmutaba en algo gaseoso.

Gris miró hacia atrás mientras su vista se nublaba y vio a su madre brillar como si una luz la inundara desde dentro. Fue la última imagen que impresionó su retina, una imagen que introdujo un último rastro de felicidad en su joven existencia antes de caer hacia el suelo como el peso muerto que ya era.

Al culminar la cumbre pudimos ver el valle que se abría a nuestros pies e iniciamos el descenso. Al doblar un pequeño recodo descubrimos los cadáveres de unos pájaros. Eran bien grandes, animales marinos y me pregunté que demonios harían aquí, tan lejos del mar. Había suficientes como para alimentar a todo el grupo, pero cuando estuve encima del primero advertí la espuma verde en sus picos, también estaban contaminados. Levanté la vista y vi la enorme nube verdosa que permanecía suspendida sobre nosotros y supe que ese día sería el último. Pensé que había tenido una buena vida, que demonios, una vida estupenda, la vida de un guerrero, y miré el horizonte. Aquel era un buen día para morir.

Una de las aves muertas llamó mi atención. A diferencia de las otras que yacían desmadejadas por la violencia del impacto, esta parecía haberse posado plácidamente sobre el suelo y su cuerpo contenía una luz interior, como si fuera de alabastro. Sentí deseos de tocarla, pero en cuanto mis dedos rozaron sus plumas se deshizo en unas cenizas brillantes que se esparcieron iluminando brevemente este suelo tóxico, y aquel misterio me sobrecogió como una premonición.

Me senté en posición de loto, al menos enfrentaría la eternidad con dignidad. Los demás al verme, hicieron lo mismo en silencio, habían comprendido. Levanté la vista. La nube algodonosa descendía suave y lentamente hacia nosotros como un letal maná. Me refugié en una vieja letanía. Al poco, una caricia cálida y húmeda comenzó a envolverme, no era necesario abrir los ojos para saber que la niebla me estaba abrazando. La piel de mi rostro comenzó a irritarse, escocía como una gota de limón sobre una herida. Inhalé profundamente. Era fuego, un ácido corrosivo que se ensañó por dentro corroyendo mis pulmones. El silencio invadió mi mente e inundó la Tierra con una calma yerma que no perturbaría jamás criatura alguna.

Dicen que cuando Brahma sueña, crea el mundo. Hoy abrirá los ojos.

Homecoming

Louis sometimes wondered if his grandmother had enough mind left to be frightened, sad or lonely. Whenever he saw her she either slept or coughed or told everyone in earshot how much she loved them, even if she hadn’t seen them before.

She wasn’t as bad off as some of her fellow wayfarers in the nursing home. She didn’t scream profanities or sob uncontrollably or sit staring at the wall spouting gibberish. No, she was calm and kind and stupid and Louis was thankful for that.

It was always hard for him to square up his image of her in his head, of that wonderful, cheerful woman of average intelligence who nevertheless provided the only real safe harbor he had ever had during the tempests of his youth. Gone were the summers spent in her care, wandering the yard with his cousins and picking honeysuckles from the bushes that grew there and staining the windows of the spare bedroom by throwing plums at it. Gone were the mediocre Sunday dinners and the superb week night takeouts and pizzas, gone was the eerie sound of the grandfather clock haunting him from the dining room, and gone were the stories of her grandmother who had lived through the Civil War.

All that was in their place was a simple machine with the mind of a child and the body of a Mini Cooper. Her skin had dried out and papered up since he last saw her, and he imagined he was holding the hand of a giant, drowsy toad whenever he sat beside her, her fat fingers interlaced with his.

Was it really right or necessary to keep her in this state, he often thought to himself. He even voiced his opinions to the other members of her family, but they either laughed it off as his dark humor or told him that life and death are in the hands of God and God alone. He didn’t agree, he couldn’t imagine God being so heartless as to leave a half dead bird stuck in the front grill of whatever kind of car the Almighty saw fit to drive through the heavens. Probably a Trans Am, dark red with Warrant pumping through the speakers.

Going to see his grandmother became oppressive in a way that going to visit her house had seemed liberating when she still seemed to know he wasn’t her son or brother. The winding halls of the nursing home had a yellowed look about them like old cigarette butts, and the smell was barely better than an abattoir. The inmates leered at him as he walked by, or stared blankly through him, and the large black ladies who ran the place treated him alternately with cold indifference or deepest distain.

It had been a few months since he’d moved back to the US, and he had spent a few hours of the afternoon sitting beside her watching the Hallmark channel as she softly snored. He wiped drool off her chin and looked at his phone, but the time seemed to crawl by on hands and knees and he knew he would have to sit there until he felt his guilt had been assuaged.

Honey, he heard a weak voice croak at his side, and he looked over to see his grandmother looking at him. Her pale blue eyes held the weight of a century, just about, and while they were usually as dull as a butter knife there was sharpness in them that day that made him pay attention to her immediately.

Yes, grandma, he said. What is it?

I’ve missed you, honey, I’ve been waiting for you to come back.

Have you? he asked. He knew in a minute she would fall back asleep and he could go on watching the Hallmark movie, but she sounded alert in a way she hadn’t in years.

No one else will help me, honey, just you.

Help you what, grandma?

Leave. I want to go home.

You are home, grandma. You were just having a bad dream.

No, honey, I want to go home.

She looked at him in a way she never had before, in a way that made him think he had never really known her at all. Sure, he knew about her childhood on the farm, about her grandmother in the Civil War and her in World War 2, about her honeymoon in Gatlinburg and her three sons that died before they were a week old. He didn’t know why, but he knew their whole relationship came down to this, that the summers together and the deer head in her attic and the shotgun holes in her hallway floor and the pictures and shirts of his long dead grandfather all came to this moment.

Ok, he said. Let’s get you out of here. He closed the door to her room and wheeled over her chair next to her bed, and wished Archimedes himself had been there to help him with a lever and pulley. His grandmother had roughly attained the size of a small whale. With difficulty he got her into a sitting position, and by the time he helped her off of the bed and into her chair he was covered in sweat. The whole time she just looked at him, as if he were the sun and moon and stars and if God and time allowed her she would have just stayed looking at him forever.

She was tethered to an oxygen tank, which ran around her head and into her nose like the tendrils of a hungry alien. He made to strap the tank to the back of her chair, but her voice stopped him cold.

No, honey, I don’t need that anymore. Help me take this off.

Her stubby fingers struggled with the cord around her face, her underarms swaying like palm trees in a hurricane.

But you need-

Please, honey, help me take this damn thing off.

That in itself shocked him into obedience. He had never heard his grandmother swear before, had not known she even knew any swear words, but he didn’t have time to think about this as he helped take the oxygen cord out of her nose and off of her head. She reached out for the blanket folded next to her bed, the one her long dead husband had given her the Christmas before he died. He unfolded it and draped it over her lap and leaned down to let her kiss him. She managed her Bible by herself, a hideous old thing of cracked red leather and dog ears and highlights in all the colors of the rainbow and sticky notes and paper clips.

Okay, she said, I’m ready to go home.

He opened her door halfway, looked up and down the hall and, not seeing any of the fierce guardians of the nursing home, wheeled her down the hall and past the common room. He almost forgot the exit code in his haste to get her out of the building, but she leaned over and hit 1555 and the door opened. They were free! He wheeled her out to his car, and with only a bit of trouble he helped her into the front seat. She seemed slightly lighter than before, a bit more limber, and his back thanked her for it. He opened the trunk and made to fold up the wheelchair when she said, No, honey, leave it here. I won’t need it.

He didn’t quite believe her but he knew, somehow, that to argue was to lose, and anyways who knew how long they had before they were missed and the authorities were called and she was sent back to lie forever in that awful room at the end of that hall that stank of living death and dirty diapers.

As they left the parking lot he noticed that she seemed even more alert than ever, more alive than she had in years and she smiled and seemed to recognize places she knew as they drove. When they passed the hospital he and his mother and her siblings had been born in she smiled bigger than ever and looked at him and took his hand in hers. It didn’t feel as dry as it had before, and her fingers weren’t so swollen. She had some color in her cheeks, and her chin didn’t jiggle quite so much.

They drove down the grand old street of their town, the one with the tallest churches and the whitest houses with the biggest columns and balconies, where the leaves never seemed to die and the sidewalks were cracked because they couldn’t hold down the awesome power of the roots of those trees that you could see laughing out of the corner of your eye.

He made to make the turn to go to that house she had lived at his whole life, that house that had been home and harbor, pirate ship and desert island and wild jungle and all the things he had needed it to be through all the stages of his life until she had left it and it became wood and nails and paint and the smell of her faded from it.

No, honey, not there. Home. She smiled at him, as if he was just a little behind but would be getting it shortly. He kept going, out to the country, back to where she was really from, and where in her mind she had never really left. They only stopped so he could get her a large cup of tea, that sweet iced tea people from that part of the world hold to so desperately but he had never liked. She loved it like it was the blood flowing through her veins.

As they got farther out the decay of the town slowly faded and the houses got thinner. They passed shuttered gas stations and abandoned stands advertising ‘hot boiled peanuts’ and Confederate flags still clinging desperately to the past. They saw kudzu and trailer parks and, the farther they got from town, woods that grew thicker and wilder than he remembered ever seeing in those parts.

They didn’t say much, but he drove with one hand on the wheel and the other in hers and every so often he would sneak a glance over and see her gazing contentedly out at the passing landscape. After a time they drove past the church where her parents were buried, next to her unfortunate sister Garnet who had died when she was only six of typhoid fever. They drove past old houses that lingered like lost ghosts and started up the long driveway to the house her father had built and died in, where she and her brothers and sisters and been born and a few had died.

Her sister still lived there, at least part of the time, but she wasn’t there then and as far as he could tell no one had been there in a few weeks. His grandmother was smiling more than ever, and she squeezed his hand and he parked the car.

Now come over and help me out, honey.

He went around the car and opened her door, and he wished he hadn’t left the wheelchair but she seemed quite sure of herself so he took her hands and pulled her up and out of the car and onto her feet. The strength of her grip surprised him, as did the way she seemed steady on her feet. She looked younger than he remembered her looking for many years, and he was happy and sad and a little frightened all at once but when she put her arm through his he didn’t object.

I don’t know how we’ll get in, grandma. I don’t know where the spare key is and I don’t think anyone has been here in some time.

We’re not going in there, honey, I’m going home.

If this wasn’t her home he didn’t know what was and tried to say as much but she stopped him by pointing towards the thicket of trees in the distance, across the field that used to contain horses and picnic tables and laughing children.

He didn’t see the point of arguing, and she seemed surer of herself than he did so he acquiesced and led her past the barn and across the field, slowly at first but faster and faster the farther they got. She seemed to draw strength from the pastures of her youth, from the voices of her past that you could almost hear if you tried hard enough. She was getting stronger and faster and seemed to be leading him, and as they neared the woods he could hear her singing to herself and laughing.

He wasn’t sure where she was leading him, but as they reached the edge of the woods he realized they had been headed there all along.

I’m sorry, honey. You can’t come any further with me, not right now. I’ve waited for you for so long, so you could bring me home, and now you’ll have to wait until you can meet me there. I love you, son, and as she said this she looked at him with that fierce pride and love and absolute abandon that only grandmothers can have for their grandsons.

She gently unhooked her arm from his, gave him a last smile and a kiss and walked unaided, for the first time in years, down a path he hadn’t seen before and into the trees. She didn’t look back, but he knew she was smiling and he could hear her singing long after he lost sight of her. When the last notes faded he smiled, stood for a moment listening to the rustling of the leaves and the babbling of the brook and turned and slowly walked back to his car.

Burnt Offering

Onto the great plains he walks, looking for a place that will have him. Vast and incommensurate is the Earth when aimlessness guides man, but the laws of attraction apply even in mourning, for he settles in a promontory overseeing the same dry, hard lands that took away that which he most loved. He goes to nearby villages and collects metallic planks, bags and strings to build a small, precarious shack, and his refuge becomes known to the locals as the crashed satellite for the way that it shines like a beacon in the horizon under the fierce sun. A fallen piece of the heavens.

He thinks that his stay is temporary, but he will remain here for years, bearing the summer´s suffocating heat, which turns the air inside the hut into a thick miasma, and during winters so cold that there are nights when, shivering unrelentingly, he can feel time itself cease to exist, though his life is never claimed. And he wonders if they, buried in that same ground not that far away, are the ones keeping him alive. Can the dead intercede for us in our time of need, even if we would like them to not do so? And if they cannot, would God? He was never a religious man, but he wakes from nights so dark and cold that nothing but the sheer power of that which lays beyond man´s understanding could explain his survival.

And he dreams about them, his wife and his daughter, and he remembers their smell and their voice and their light and when he wakes, he wonders if maybe grief itself is what is keeping him alive.

And in the morning, sore and stiff but alive, he would crawl from his shack, a bedraggled figure in thick winter clothes, to witness the sunrise, and start walking down the promontory towards the sunrise and the railroad track where the accident happened, where the world stopped for him that day, not so long ago.

There is no sound in the dry plains of the open earth he inhabits but that of his footsteps, for the wind has stopped and the winter sun has instituted a permanent stillness that envelops all as the man walks slowly towards the abandoned railroad tracks that cut through the land. He squeezes pass the decaying fence and steps unto the small pebbles that follow the railroad tracks, his feet moulding the ground beneath him. There is a boulder carrying two pale white names with dates, and here the man crouches and places his palms over the names and bows his head and in the silence of this vast expanse begins softly to weep.

After the accident he spent weeks without leaving his apartment because he couldn´t think of where to go. A lifetime of habits, needs, and drives all evaporated. He could not grasp how he could have ever done anything, as the mere thought of an action created such a need for energy that exhausted him. Nor could he believe that he had eaten every day of his life, ingestion of food now seeming an unnecessary and unnatural act. Family and friends came to him, but he wouldn’t see them.

He’d doze in and out in front of the television and from what he could grasp from the news, the high-speed train that his wife and daughter had been travelling in had crashed, killing fifty people. He had already received the phone call from the police, though he later would always think that it had been the coroner who had called him, so that when they said their names on television, he was already expecting it. The different experts, whose advice the news anchors sought, and who for the man were just shadows projected from a faraway world, speculated about a possible mechanical failure, though a man-made error was not being ruled out.

When he discovered, weeks later, that the accident had taken place due to a bizarre combination of the train conductor falling asleep, coupled with a mechanical failure that had prevented the brake system from deploying when the train reached a speed of 200 km/h in a section where the maximum speed was of 150 km/h, the man did not feel anger. He did not even mind that the conductor had survived without a scratch. Feelings seemed to be something for him that had also ceased to exist. It was then that he grabbed a backpack from his closet, begun to fill it with clothes, thrown in pell-mell and without care for the season, and left the apartment.

When he left his home, he knew that he was leaving behind everything that he had ever been and everything that he had ever wanted.

It is to the village that he goes in need of provisions, a bedraggled figure discernible and witnessed by all. He is known as an anchorite by some, a madman by others. He buys water and canned perishables and does not speak to the townsfolk, for he sees the pity in their eyes. When he does feel like talking, like today, he goes to see the priest.

“You are early”. The words come before his eyes can become accustomed to the infinite darkness within the church.

“I didn´t know I had a time”, the man says, walking towards the altar alight he stops near the front row, where he sees the priest perusing a Bible and mumbling as he skips through the book. “It seems that it is just in Genesis”, he finally says.

“What?”

“Genesis”, the priest repeats and lifts the opened bible to him. “Someone scribbled a new profanity.” He closed the book and rose. “I get it almost every week, on a different Bible, a different profanity, a different part of Genesis, a different page.”

The man bent down to look at the profanity. “Determinate fellow”, he finally said.

“I would think that if one blames God for whichever calamity one suffers, to the point of hating Him so much that one needs to systematically leave a written record of one´s feelings on a holy book, and may I add therefore systematically destroying church property, well then I would think that one would just not come to church”, said the priest, replacing the Bible for a new one and looking at the man.

“I have never in my life come to one of your masses.”

The priest laughed. “You aren’t the only one with a bone to pick with God. Besides, I know exactly who it is. One of the benefits of lowered church attendance is that I know who sits where during mass. Come, let´s go to the back.”

The church was small but the hallways through which the man was led did not seem to be constrained by the space that the structure occupied, as if different laws of space applied within the temple. He could see small religious paintings decorating the walls.

They reached a set of closed doors and the priest opened one and invited him in. It was the first time that he had taken him to what appeared to be his office.

During their talks, they would speak about his loss, and about God, and about divine omnipotence.

“You have been living out there for some months now”, said the priest walking pass the big mahogany desk and pointing towards a chair for the man to sit on while he occupied the one behind the desk. “Why don´t you come live into town? You will still be close to… them”, he finally said. “If that is what you wish. And I believe that you will find that the townsfolk can help you in your grief.”

The man was looking at the different things that the priest had on his desk, from scattered papers to what seemed like religiously themed magazines and books. He looked up.

“I can’t see myself living amongst people anymore”, he replied. “I feel more connection with my wife and daughter where I am now.”

“I see”, said the priest, reclining in his chair. The man could see that he was becoming pensive, which meant that a probing question was coming. “Loss is a burden that life gives us, said the priest looking towards the ceiling in his reclined position. Both are indivisible, as there is no life without death and vice versa. It is therefore not only a human emotion, as animals also experience loss, albeit to a lesser degree, I imagine. All living things have to become acquainted with that feeling. Maybe even plants do, in their own way. Yet, it seems to be solely our human nature to blame ourselves when we lose someone, even when, in most cases, we do not have the power to intercede.”

The priest opened a drawer and produced a very elaborate wine decanter and set it on the table. He pulled the stopper and was about to reach for two wine glasses when the man stopped him. “Not for me, thank you.”

The priest seemed to hesitate whether to put the decanter away or pour himself some. He finally opted for putting it away.

“It is during those times of grief”, he continued, “that having someone, helps. Darkness can disorient, and what you experienced has placed you in an abyss that I understand is very difficult to traverse. But one does not get out of such a place alone. Without a community, man becomes disconnected from his own humanity.” The priest stopped and moved forward in his seat, placing his arms on the desk. The man was looking up, to a big painting behind the priest of a dove with its wings extended, as if about to land on the viewer. “What I’m trying to get at, the priest continued, is whether you may not be, rather, punishing yourself?”

The man lowered his gaze to meet the priest´s eyes. “I know that it was not my fault. I know that being in that train with them would not have changed anything. I know…” his voice cracked.

The priest moved closer to the man and tried to hold his arm, but he couldn’t reach it, so he placed his hand near him on the table, as if he was pointing to something there. “Your burden is not yours. People think that loss is their own personal calamity, but it isn’t. Loss is a daily occurrence, and it is a shared calamity suffered by countless people. You will not bring them back by making it as hard as possible on yourself. There is no debt that needs to be repaid with your pain or with your death. How can you not see that!” The priest raised his voice.

“You act as if by extricating yourself from the world you will not have to abide by its laws, but you do, and you will.”

“With all due respect, father, you have not lost a wife and a daughter, full stop. Are you going to tell me not to worry because I will see them in another life? That they are looking down at me now and are sad because I cannot fathom the thought of living without them?” The man raised his arms. “Your claims are smoke, he said. You transact in dead currency.”

The priest shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

“Well,” he said. “At least you have started to externalize your anger, instead of taking it out on yourself. I will continue to pray so that God helps you and makes you realize that your pain is not your own. But you have to want it to be so, until then it will continue to fester and eat at you. Your insides need light, too. What was that thing that Nietzsche said? Open the windows, we need fresh air? Well, you need to open the windows to your soul, son. That is if you want to live the life that you deserve to live, that Clara and Stephanie would have want you to live”.

The man stiffened. “Do not say their names, he said, a rage rising now in his voice. Do not. Quote whoever you want and say whatever you want, but do not utter their names.”

“Sorry”, the priest said. Silence fell.

The man was the first one to break the silence: “I never thought a priest would quote Nietzsche.”

The priest smiled. “Well, do you know that he was going to be a priest? I think that if one is born with a, let’s say, heightened spiritual sense, then that means that priesthood runs in your veins, regardless of your life choices. Nietzsche studied to be a priest and in fact he was less atheistic than commonly thought. He never claimed that God didn’t exist, he just informed everyone of what had actually taken place: that we, with our need to rationalize everything, had killed him. But anyone who knows anything about the nature of the divine surely knows that you cannot kill that which gave all life, that which even in death, lives. Maybe that is why he went insane, Nietzsche I mean. Maybe he realized that his work was that of a man who could see but chose to close his eyes.”

The man thought this over, but before he could say anything, the priest spoke again. “I have mass now; you are welcome to stay. You will find that the community here will receive you with open arms, if you let them. Maybe you will see that the burden becomes lighter when you are not trying to lift the world just on your shoulders.”

The man got up. “Thank you, father”, he said. “But I must be going.”

Summer. The sun reigns king above him in a cloudless, blue sky elongate to the edges of the world. His shadow falling over the names of his wife and daughter, he turns around and walks back towards his shack in the promontory overseeing the plains. A pilgrimage repeated often, all the history of mankind there.

The man stands in front of his dilapidated shack, the silhouette of what was his shelter no longer in view, corrugated metal planks laying like victims of a crime on the ground. What little he owned now torn and burnt. He lifts the planks in search for the sole photo of them he had but cannot find it. All that he now possesses are the faded old clothes he wears, clothes that seem to have only known the harshest of weathers. His long black hair fuses with his beard and his dishevelled figure reminds of the barbarians that once roamed this land.

He walks to the village and learns that the fire could be seen from there, but no one speaks as to the cause or the perpetrator. He is told that they could see the pyre right after sunrise and that it looked like something momentous was burning.

He searches for materials in the village, but he cannot find any and he sleeps several days out in the open. One morning someone gives him a sleeping bag and with it he begins to walk north, to the great mountains there, where he sleeps in caves while growing emaciated and weak. One night he hears the shrieks of what he thinks are wolves or coyotes, though he knows that there are none in this area.

Several nights later he hears the same noises and looks outside the cave and whether he is sick, mad, or dying he knows not but he sees the night lit with thousands of torches carried by barbarians mounted on horses insane and wild, and he is witness to a battlefield from primordial times, barbarians in thick animal furs that look like crazed animals imbued with human features, slaying other barbarians that when felled are buried into the mud so heavy are the pelts they wear, and when the battle ends and the defeated retreat, he collapses at the foot of the cave.

He is standing near railroad tracks, but they are not the ones he knows, for he is standing in an endless, dense forest. He begins to wonder where he is when he starts to hear a train coming in the distance, and he knows that the train has no brakes for he can hear the grinding sound of metal on metal becoming deafening, and as he is about to see what materializes over the hill, a gust of wind violently shakes the world and almost lifts him up. When he looks again he can see that it is not a train but rather a coroner´s gurney somehow riding on the railroad tracks, like some giant conveyor belt of the deceased, and he knows that is it the same gurney that he did not want to see when they called him from the mortuary, and it has a corpse on it covered with a white sheet and as it passes in front of him he thinks that it will stop, like some kind of death package, but it continues on and he sees that the sheet is slowly sliding down, so that the face of the corpse will soon be seen, and although the gurney is far away, he knows that when it falls and shows the corpse´s face, he will go insane, but he cannot stop looking. And as the first strands of hair start becoming visible, the tracks turn into the forest and the gurney disappears. But in the irrational logic of the mythic he wonders why there was only one corpse for there should be two, and as if summoned by this thought, the man feels a presence behind him and is paralyzed by the threat of death, the reason why we don’t scream when we die, for we are too terrified to muster any air, and he closes his eyes, but it is not enough for somehow he can still see, and he tries to bring up his hands to cover them, to pluck them out if necessary, but he cannot move and so he starts looking up at the sky, at the light in the sky for salvation as the presence is now in front of him, and he knows that it will grab him and take him with it and he wants to go up, up towards the heavens and the light in the sky, but he knows that it won´t let him, and there is another thunderous gust of wind that seems to pull him up but then he is gripped by the coldest of hands.

He wakes startled to several strangers surrounding him, their faces forming a circle in the sky above him. The sun over them does not allow him to see their faces, so that they all look at first devoid of features.

“Are you ok?” a male voice asked.

“Where am I?” the man was covering his face from the sunlight.

“On the floor”, another male replied. Chuckles.

They raise him and he looks at them. Three men wearing brown tunics and two older women wearing long, dark garbs and he thinks that they might all be gypsies, but he is not sure.

“Who are you?” he finally asks.

“We are travellers, pilgrims, citizens of the entire world we are, and I have to tell you that although we have seen a lot of weird stuff, we have never seen a man half naked lying on the ground in such a fashion!” the younger man said, extending his arms apart, to show the man.

“And facing down! To the ground! How could you breathe?” one of the older women asked, grabbing him by the arm, as if to make sure that he was indeed a living creature.

“You looked like you had fallen from the sky and got plastered on the ground! Really a bizarre thing. We almost didn´t approach, we thought that you were a corpse, and we don´t want any problems with the law, we don´t. We are just passing through, and don´t want any trouble”, the young man said.

The woman that had grabbed him now pulled him over to her. “Come with us, we have water and food at our camp. You need food in you.”

The man felt the strong grip of the woman and tried to break free but realized that he did not have the energy to do so. It was then that he realized that he was not wearing a shirt. He could see his pelvis bone protruding at his waist and a cavity where his stomach should be. He could not remember the last time that he had eaten. “Ok,” the man said. “But I don´t know if I can walk or make it very far.”

“Don´t worry”, the younger man said, inserting himself under his other arm and wrapping his arm around his back. “We will help you.”

The sun was starting to fall on the horizon by the time that they reached the camp. The man saw that it was formed by several tents surrounding a fire, and he could see a figure preparing food on a cauldron. He could smell meat and spices, and onions, and a hunger arose in him that almost toppled him over.

It wasn´t until they had all reached the fire that the figure turned to him. She was also wearing dark garbs, but she had eyes the colour of caramel that illuminated her face and he could see the entire universe in them and he saw all that he ever wanted to be and all that he would ever be, and that was fine and that was enough, and why would anyone want more than that? She smiled at him, her long, dark hair blowing in the wind seemed made of materials of another world entire.

“Sara, we have found this man when we were coming back. Do we have enough food prepared?”

“Yes, mother,” the woman said. “We do”. She helped her mother sit the man down.

“This is my daughter”, the old lady said. “Her name is Sara.”

The man looked up at her, still feeling her touching his arm.

“John”, he said. “My name is John.”

They ate together and he had to force himself to stop looking at her and then he had to stop himself from eating, lest he explode.

They told him that they came from eastern lands and that they were nomads traveling north, for they liked to live simply like their forefathers had done, and their forefathers before them. John looked around and saw that they had a couple of donkeys as beasts of burden and several dogs wondering through the camp.

They were all eating around the fire and the men started talking about different adventures that they had lived through and situations where they thought that the weather would get the better of them. And he told them his story and how he didn´t know how he had not died during the winter. They asked him about the shelter that he had built and when he told them that it was just planks held together by rope, they asked him if he had covered the structure with tarpaulins and when he said no, they all raised their arms in shock. “But what about the water!” one said. “What about the reflection of the sun! That thing must have been visible from a hundred miles!” said another.

And he told them about the barbarians that he saw and he told them that he didn´t know if it had been a dream or a vision. They all stared at the fire in silence and when the silence was broken it was not the men who spoke but the old lady. “The land remembers”, she said. “It has known battles the scale of which we cannot fathom, for the history of man is one of violence and blood, and death. The barbarians that invaded this land so many centuries ago and died here are part of what makes this land so, just as much as those who died fighting much more recently. Their blood is part of the history of this land, and the history is past, but the land is present. What you saw is just as much part of the land as what you can see now, as what you can smell and taste.” She turned to him and pointed towards the darkness that surrounded the camp. “But all this darkness is just a part of it. You are also part of the history of this land.” She now turned and pointed towards the fire. “And this fire, this light, is part of the history of this land. It is our duty to carry it so that those lost in the darkness can find a way”, she said.

“Do you want to come with us?” It was Sara now who spoke.

She looked at her. She had covered her head with part of the garb and was looking at him from across the fire.

He turned his gaze to the fire and thought about his life up to the accident, about the destroyed shack in which he had lived for almost two years, and about the priest, and thought about his memories of Clara and Stephanie, memories that he was shocked to realize were beginning to fade, and he thought about how the world was when they were were here and how the world was now that they weren´t. When he raised his eyes, they were in tears, and he saw that Sara was still looking at him. She got up and came over to him and wiped the tears from his eyes and held his face between her hands.

John could feel an enormous weight being lifted, as if by her holding him, she had decided to share the burden with him.

John smiled. “Ok”, he said. “Ok.”

No podemos perderles antes de graduarse

 

Recibí un correo nuevo en mi bandeja de entrada que decía: "La alumna intentó suicidarse tomando una sobredosis de pastillas, pero afortunadamente se encuentra bien". Lamentablemente, este tipo de correos no eran únicos, sino que se habían vuelto recurrentes. El año anterior, otra alumna perdió la vida por suicidio.

En los círculos de amigos, cada vez es más común encontrarme con casos similares relacionados con la salud mental. Como profesor, me sorprende que aproximadamente un tercio de mis estudiantes elijan hablar sobre problemas de salud mental en sus discursos y en sus trabajos. El hashtag #mentalhealth se ha empleado en millones de vídeos de TikTok y ha generado casi 30 millones de publicaciones públicas en Instagram en 2021¹.

Nuestro departamento de “IE Counseling” de la Universidad atendió durante 2021-2022² a casi un 10% de los estudiantes de grado, lo que representa un aumento del 48% en comparación con el año anterior (2020-2021) y más del 100% en comparación con el año 2019-2020.

Según Active Minds, una de las principales organizaciones no gubernamentales estadounidenses en salud mental dedicada a los jóvenes, el 39% de los estudiantes universitarios luchan frente a problemas de salud mental significativos mientras están en la universidad³. Esto coincide con mi impresión personal cuando interactúo con los estudiantes y me revelan los problemas de salud a los que se han enfrentado. Los problemas de salud mental crecen como un tsunami entre la población joven.

Son muchas las preguntas que se me vienen a la cabeza. ¿Cómo valoramos estos datos? ¿Cuáles son las causas de estos aumentos entre la población joven?  ¿Cuáles son los principales problemas de salud mental de nuestra población universitaria? ¿Por qué está sucediendo así? Y, lo más importante, ¿cómo podemos ayudar y apoyar a nuestros estudiantes universitarios?

 

Entender el problema

Los datos muestran un crecimiento alarmante. Por ejemplo, en España, el número de casos de trastornos de ansiedad ha aumentado, multiplicándose por seis en la última década, mientras que los trastornos depresivos se han multiplicado por cinco.

Según UNICEF, la ansiedad y la depresión prevalecen mayoritariamente en los diferentes casos de trastorno mental que se registran entre niños y niñas de 10 a 19 años (2019).

Cuando se analizan los casos de depresión en Estados Unidos o en España, se observa que hay una mayor proporción de diagnósticos de mujeres frente a hombres.

Los gráficos también muestran que, aunque la depresión afecta más a las personas mayores en España, son los más jóvenes quienes más consultan a profesionales de la salud mental. Estos datos podrían sugerir que las generaciones más jóvenes tienen menos tabú en torno a la salud mental y es más probable que consulten a un profesional.

Según un informe de la Asociación Americana de Psiquiatría (2019)⁴, la Generación Z es más propensa a recibir tratamiento o asistir a terapia (37%) en comparación con los Millennials (35%), la Generación X (26%), los Baby Boomers (22%) y la Generación Silenciosa (15%). Esto podría deberse a una menor estigmatización o a una mayor conciencia emocional y de salud mental en estas generaciones. Sin embargo, al examinar otro informe de la Asociación Americana de Psiquiatría (2018) mostrada en el siguiente gráfico se observa que las generaciones más jóvenes, especialmente la Generación Z, son las que en menor porcentaje informan sentirse en buen estado mental.

Esto se traduce, en su forma más grave, en los casos de suicidio. Según el Observatorio Nacional de Suicidio en España, en 2021 fallecieron por suicidio 4.003 personas en España⁵, un promedio de 11 personas al día. El 75% de ellas eran varones y el 25% mujeres. 2021 fue el año con más suicidios registrados en la historia de España. Estos datos son especialmente graves en la población más joven: el suicidio de chicos menores de 15 años se ha duplicado respecto a 2020, y entre los 15 y los 29 años, el suicidio es la principal causa absoluta de muerte, superando a los accidentes de tráfico o los tumores.

Además de los casos registrados de muerte por suicidio, es importante tener en cuenta los intentos y la ideación suicida. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), se estima que por cada suicidio se producen alrededor de 20 intentos. Esto podría significar que se estarían produciendo aproximadamente 80.000 intentos de suicidio al año en España.

Otros estudios epidemiológicos citados por el Observatorio del suicidio en España señalan que la ideación del suicidio puede afectar a entre el 5% y el 10% de la población española a lo largo de su vida, lo que representa entre dos y cuatro millones de personas⁶.

Estos datos coinciden con estimaciones similares en Estados Unidos, donde un gran porcentaje de estudiantes ha considerado en algún momento un intento de suicidio y también padece trastornos como la ansiedad o la depresión⁷.

La prescripción de psicofármacos es otra información fundamental a tener en cuenta.  Desde que comenzó la pandemia, se ha registrado un aumento de más del doble en la prescripción de psicofármacos en España, convirtiéndose junto a Portugal, en el país de la OCDE donde más psicofármacos se consumen. Incluso existen estudios que afirman que incluso antes de la pandemia, en 2019, España ya lideraba a nivel mundial el consumo de ansiolíticos, hipnóticos y sedantes, superando las 91 dosis diarias por cada 1.000 habitantes⁸.

Según el último informe de la Junta Internacional de Fiscalización de Estupefacientes (JIFE) correspondiente a 2020, con datos de antes de la pandemia, España encabezaba el consumo lícito mundial de ansiolíticos, hipnóticos y sedantes, con un aumento del 4,5%, superando las 91 dosis diarias por cada 1.000 habitantes. El Ministerio de Sanidad de España también confirma un crecimiento anual de prescripciones de ansiolíticos y antidepresivos del 4-6%. En 2021, los médicos en España recetaron 54 millones de cajas de ansiolíticos y 45,1 millones de antidepresivos entre enero y noviembre del año pasado⁹.

 

Y, ¿cuáles son las causas?

Si bien es cierto que existen factores de riesgo individuales para la enfermedad mental, como el maltrato, enfermedades crónicas, antecedentes familiares y trastornos en el hogar, también debemos reflexionar sobre lo que sucede en nuestra sociedad, y especialmente entre los más jóvenes, para que esto suceda.

Vamos a comenzar primero con uno de los temas principales, las redes sociales.

Aunque pueda parecer un tópico, una tendencia, o una queja vintage de aquellos que experimentamos en el pasado una vida sin redes sociales, es una realidad muy preocupante. Frances Haugen, ingeniera de datos, reveló decenas de miles de documentos internos de Facebook que demostraban que Instagram empeora los problemas de imagen corporal de una de cada tres adolescentes¹⁰.

El Ciberbullying o ciberacoso se ha intensificado con el uso de las redes sociales. Estas plataformas permiten difundir mensajes de acoso y odio a gran escala y en cualquier momento, durante los siete días de la semana. Antes, era posible cambiar de contexto o refugiarse en casa, y el acoso quedaba confinado a un lugar y momento determinados. Sin embargo, esto ha cambiado con las redes sociales. Ya no hay límites horarios ni lugar específico para el acoso, se vuelve permanente.

Según diversos estudios¹¹, se estima que una persona promedio pasa al menos 3 horas al día en su teléfono móvil, cambiando entre aplicaciones casi 600 veces, y dedica más de 5 años de su vida en las redes sociales. No es sorprendente que los jóvenes de la Generación Z y los Millennials informen que el 74% se sienten distraídos en el trabajo, y el 16% de ellos se siente distraído la mayor parte del tiempo. Además, más del 50% de estos jóvenes manifiesta ser menos productivos y aproximadamente el 20% siente que no logra alcanzar su potencial¹². Recuerdo una estudiante que vino un día a mi despacho y me dijo: “No soy capaz de aprobar ningún examen final. A pesar de que estudio, cuando el examen es extenso, pierdo la concentración y la atención, y los nervios no me permiten recordar nada”. La pérdida de atención y concentración en los jóvenes tiene diversas repercusiones: no logran desarrollar todo su potencial lo cual genera frustración; les resulta difícil encontrar claridad mental y emocional frente a los grandes desafíos de sus vidas, y también afecta a su capacidad cognitiva.

Las redes sociales también contribuyen al aislamiento de los jóvenes y algunos expertos lo han denominado como “La paradoja de las redes sociales”.  Según un estudio publicado por el “American Journal of Preventive medicine” en 2017, el 25% de las personas más activas en Facebook tenían tres veces más probabilidades de ser parte del 25% de personas que se encontraban más solas. A pesar de la sensación de conexión que generan las redes sociales, esa conectividad es una ilusión y la falta de interacciones en el mundo real puede generar aislamiento entre los jóvenes.

Otro aspecto muy preocupante es la cantidad de tiempo que los adolescentes pasan delante de las pantallas. En Estados Unidos, este tiempo ha aumentado en un 30% entre 2015 y 2021. Como se observa en la siguiente gráfica, en 2021, los adolescentes de 13 a 18 años pasaban algo más de 8 horas diarias delante de una pantalla, mientras que los niños de 8 a 12 años pasaban más de 5 horas. Esta situación también se replica en España. Un estudio de la Fundación Gasol¹³ revela que, durante la semana, los niños y adolescentes pasan más de tres horas frente a las pantallas y los fines de semana esta cifra se dispara a cinco horas. Esto reduce su participación en actividades físicas diarias, las cuales son muy relevantes para su salud mental. La Organización Mundial de la Salud recomienda que este segmento de población no pase más de 120 minutos al día delante de las pantallas.

En segundo lugar, es importante señalar la pandemia (COVID) como un punto de inflexión que ha agravado la situación de los problemas de salud mental. Durante este periodo, se produjo entre otras cosas, un aislamiento y una pérdida de la vida social que provocaron un aumento de la depresión y ansiedad entre los más jóvenes.

Un sondeo realizado por UNICEF¹⁴ reveló que, uno de cada dos jóvenes de Latinoamérica y el Caribe experimentó una disminución en la motivación para realizar actividades que normalmente disfrutaba antes de la pandemia y tres de cada cuatro sintieron la necesidad de buscar ayuda relacionada con su bienestar físico y mental. Un estudio publicado en The Lancet, que abarcó 204 países¹⁵, mostró que los jóvenes entre 15-25 años fueron los más afectados por el incremento en la prevalencia de trastornos de ansiedad o depresión, y también hubo un aumento significativo en los casos entre las mujeres en comparación con los hombres. Otra consecuencia del confinamiento fue el aumento en el consumo de sustancias debido a la ansiedad generada por la falta de contacto social.

En tercer lugar, me gustaría destacar algunos aspectos de la sociedad actual que influyen en la salud mental. Expertos indican que vivimos en una sociedad con niveles de estrés mayores que en generaciones anteriores, lo cual afecta a nuestros adolescentes a estar más dispuestos a estos síntomas¹⁶. Otros expertos opinan que vivimos en una sociedad con “drogodependencia emocional”.

Por un lado, existe una positividad tóxica que exige estar siempre bien y esto hace que muchos adolescentes se sientan culpables por estar tristes. Por otro lado, asociamos la felicidad al consumo emocional en lugar de la razón. Se necesitan constantes consumos experienciales, donde encontrar sensaciones que nos perturben y que alteren nuestros estados de ánimo (siempre asociado a emociones positivas). Ello hace que la ausencia de estas genere emociones de insatisfacción, de angustia e incluso de ansiedad o tristeza. El desarrollo del pensamiento crítico es fundamental para observarlo e identificarlo ¹⁷.

En la sociedad actual, nuestros jóvenes se llenan de aspiraciones por la prevalencia del deseo, en detrimento de la voluntad. ¿Qué quiero decir? Nuestra sociedad de consumo y las redes sociales fomentan que nuestros jóvenes estén presionados constantemente por el deseo y la comparación de estar a la altura del resto: encontrar el mejor trabajo, disfrutar de las mejores vacaciones, probar las experiencias de tendencia, ser los más felices con sus nuevas parejas, etc. Una inagotable fuente de aspiraciones que ningún joven podrá saciar. Una necesidad de conseguir tantas cosas a corto plazo que solo genera frustración y ansiedad. Se nos olvida entrenar la voluntad y el propósito a largo plazo, sin esa presión externa.

La inteligencia artificial y machine Learning pueden también afectar, especialmente a la población más joven. Aplicaciones como ChatGPT y otras similares generan o mejoran nuevos textos, imágenes o músicas, pueden sin duda ayudarnos a realizar de manera más productiva múltiples actividades, pero también pueden desencadenar efectos muy negativos. No sólo pueden afectar a la cultura del esfuerzo de los estudiantes o a reforzar sesgos existentes, también puede afectar a minusvalorar el trabajo individual. La inteligencia artificial siempre producirá un trabajo más documentado, sin faltas gramaticales y mejor estructurado. Puede reemplazarnos con mayor productividad y efectividad en multitud de facetas. Esa sensación de reemplazo puede afectar gravemente a la salud mental de las nuevas generaciones.

Por último, es necesario aún hablar del estigma alrededor de la salud mental que puede evitar que las personas busquen ayuda.  Aunque la sociedad ha avanzado mucho en este aspecto, muchas personas no buscan apoyo por el miedo a ser etiquetados como “locos”, tal y como aún aparece en la representación de personas con enfermedades mentales en películas¹⁸, etc.  Este estigma también está presente en las redes sociales. Un estudio¹⁹ encontró que en Twitter las enfermedades mentales son más estigmatizadas (12,9%) y trivializadas (14,3%) que las enfermedades físicas (8,1 y 6,8%, respectivamente). La esquizofrenia fue la enfermedad mental más estigmatizada (41%), mientras que el trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo fue el más trivializado (33%). Estos resultados muestran que el estigma hacia la salud mental es común en las redes sociales.

 

¿Qué hacemos?

La salud mental se encuentra cada vez más en el debate público y, por tanto, también cómo tratar sus efectos y sus posibles causas.

Uno de los aspectos más relevantes es el tratamiento. La salud mental es un componente fundamental de cualquier ser humano. Por ello, tratar una neumonía o un dedo roto, debe ser igual de relevante que tratar cualquier trastorno depresivo. Por ello, el acceso universal a la salud debería incluir la atención a la salud mental.

Prescribir antidepresivos sin complementar con terapia no mejorará la situación de un individuo. Por ello, acudir a sesiones regulares de terapia sin largos periodos de espera entre citas mejora la eficacia del tratamiento.

Sin embargo, acceder a terapia, entre otros servicios, se ha convertido en un privilegio reservado para aquellos que poseen los recursos económicos necesarios. Esta situación sucede en España donde apenas se cuenta con una proporción de 6 psicólogos clínicos por cada 100.000 habitantes, frente a los 18 por cada 100.000 que tiene como promedio la Unión Europea. No es de extrañar entonces que solo 30% de los psicólogos clínicos trabajen en el sistema de salud pública en España²⁰. Fue solo el año pasado, en 2022, cuando se implementó un teléfono de prevención del suicidio (024). Además, España dedica apenas el 4% de la inversión en sanidad a la salud mental, en comparación con el promedio europeo del 5,5% y con países que llegan al 10%.

La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) afirma que una de las recomendaciones más importantes para mejorar la atención sanitaria a nivel global es integrar la atención mental en los centros de atención primaria, lo cual incluye la detección, la evaluación y el tratamiento de trastornos mentales. Por lo tanto, es fundamental facilitar el acceso a estos servicios a través del aumento de psicólogos clínicos en el sistema de salud, así como implementar planes de acción en salud mental a distintos niveles (nacional, regional y local) y asignar los recursos financieros necesarios para llevarlos a cabo.

La falta de atención adecuada a la salud mental afecta de manera desproporcionada a las personas de bajos recursos, exacerbando así el ciclo de desigualdad²¹. No sólo enfrentan un mayor riesgo de sufrir un trastorno mental debido a las dificultades en la vida, sino que también tienen un acceso limitado a la atención adecuada.

Estas recomendaciones de la OMS no son relevantes únicamente para el ámbito de la atención sanitaria, sino que también deberían aplicarse en cualquier organización. Cada vez es más común que muchas compañías implementen programas dedicados al bienestar emocional y apuesten por garantizar la salud mental en el entorno laboral²².

Dada la grave problemática de la salud mental en la juventud, las universidades y los centros educativos se constituyen como lugares claves para su prevención, control y acceso al tratamiento, prestando especial atención a sus causas subyacentes.  Según un estudio de Active Minds²³, el 39% de los estudiantes universitarios luchan con un problema de salud mental significativo durante su etapa académica.  Por lo tanto, los estudiantes universitarios requieren una mayor disponibilidad de recursos de salud mental tanto dentro como fuera del campus para satisfacer su creciente demanda.

Una encuesta realizada por Healthy Minds²⁴ reveló que el 60% de los estudiantes universitarios enfrentaba problemas para acceder a servicios de atención de salud mental. Por ello, es muy importante para los estudiantes tener la opción de encontrar ayuda adecuada en momentos de necesidad sin tener que preocuparse por su situación económica. El acceso a terapia gratuita se constituye como una gran ayuda para ellos. También son fundamentales para su educación y su productividad. Una encuesta nacional reveló que el 66% de los estudiantes universitarios consideraban que los servicios de asesoramiento mejoraban su rendimiento académico²⁵.

También es esencial reducir el estigma. Es fundamental que los jóvenes sepan que no están solos y que cuentan con redes de apoyo dispuestas a ayudarles. Estas redes pueden ser presenciales o incluso virtuales. Un ejemplo de red de apoyo es estudiantes contra la depresión²⁶. Se trata de un sitio web para estudiantes que ofrece asesoramiento y orientación a los estudiantes que sufren depresión y pensamientos suicidas.

Desde la juventud se están liderando y movilizando iniciativas para reducir el tiempo dedicado a internet y a las redes sociales. Un nuevo movimiento estudiantil pide que te desconectes. Emma Lembke, una joven universitaria, está alentando a sus compañeros a reducir el tiempo que pasan en línea y a repensar su relación con internet. Emma estudia su grado en la Universidad de Washington en San Luis y experimentó esos efectos negativos de primera mano. Por eso, en junio de 2020 puso en marcha el Movimiento “Log Off”²⁷ (log off significa desconectar o cerrar sesión). El proyecto pretende estimular el diálogo entre los jóvenes que sienten los efectos adversos de las redes sociales y quieren modificar su relación con ellas.

Desde la gobernanza, muchos activistas están demandando una mejor regulación de internet, de las plataformas de redes sociales y de cualquier aplicación tecnológica. Es paradigmático que en Estados Unidos haya más de 100 demandas contra las redes sociales por la adicción que generan²⁸. Cuando una empresa quiere sacar al mercado una mesa o un bolígrafo, debe tener en cuenta multitud de estándares de calidad que demuestran que, por ejemplo, ni los barnices, ni el plástico, ni la forma del producto, pudiera causar algún daño a nuestra salud. Entonces, ¿por qué las empresas tecnológicas y sus aplicaciones no deberían de pasar por estándares parecidos? ¿Por qué esas aplicaciones pueden generar adicciones? ¿Por qué se les permite agravar los problemas de salud mental sin tomar medidas?

Es necesario que los jóvenes puedan acercarse a las redes sociales y a las nuevas plataformas, teniendo la madurez emocional y el suficiente pensamiento crítico para distinguir nuestra circunstancia real de la virtual. Las redes sociales nos permiten generar nuestro propio avatar²⁹. En el mundo virtual, cualquiera puede elegir quién quiere ser y qué quiere enseñar, mientras que, en el mundo real, nuestra circunstancia o realidad viene predefinida. En esta realidad virtual se puede sonreír, aparentar una gran dicha y felicidad o salir perfecto en las fotos. La persona debe saber diferenciar entre el yo real y el yo virtual. Si el yo real se compara y contextualiza desde el mundo virtual, nos llenamos de pensamientos dañinos y de ideas insustanciales. La gente joven no debe comparar la fortaleza de sus amistades con el número de likes que tienen. No deben compararse con los avatares virtuales de otras personas. Para no distorsionar esa perspectiva y acabar con cuerpos esculturales pero medicados y llenos de sensaciones de vacío, los jóvenes deben desarrollar el pensamiento crítico. Es por ello fundamental que cualquier estudiante en el colegio o en la universidad, independientemente de la disciplina que desarrollen, deben seguir formándose en las humanidades³⁰ y en su bienestar mental, para que dichos conocimientos les ayuden a interpretar mejor su interacción con el mundo virtual.

Además del pensamiento crítico, educar en otro tipo de mentalidad y comportamientos son necesarios para un mejor bienestar. El filósofo José Carlos Ruiz³¹ lo distingue entre la felicidad del césped y la felicidad del árbol. El césped crece rápido, es bonito y grato. Es ideal si se busca resultados rápidos y una recompensa

MIGUEL DE CERVANTES Y DE CORTINAS Y SU PUEBLO MALDITO

Miguel de Cervantes y de Cortinas, alcalaíno de nacimiento, nunca se apellidó Saavedra. Lo de Saavedra viene de una parte lejana de su familia paterna que daba más abolengo a su propia firma en sus obras. Otra teoría es que, tras salir de su cautiverio en Argel, asume este apellido que en árabe es “shiabe-dra” que se traduce como “el manco”. Lo de Saavedra siempre fue una “cortina” de humo, un fake.

Enemigo de Lope de Vega en lo literario y casi en lo personal, no tuvo la suerte de vender tan bien como Lope sus obras en vida, pero mira por dónde, va y escribe el Quijote, la obra más traducida de la historia después de la Biblia, o al menos, esa es la cantinela que siempre nos han contado. ¿Quién se lo ha leído? Eso ya es otro cantar, al menos, aquí en España. El Quijote, de 1605, es la primera novela moderna de la historia y adquirió una importancia enorme por ser una voraz crítica a las novelas de caballería y muy alejada de las novelas románticas de la época que eran auténticos “pasteles”. La obra utiliza un total de 23.000 palabras diferentes de un total de 93.000 que comprenden el castellano, cuando una persona culta utiliza de media unas 5.000. Quizás por ello, su lectura, aunque gratificante, no es lo que se dice sencilla precisamente.

De hecho, lo que conocemos como el Quijote son realmente dos partes, siendo la primera “El Ingenioso Hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha”, y la segunda “El Ingenioso Caballero don Quijote de la Mancha”, la cual se escribió para tapar un Quijote apócrifo de un tal Avellaneda, cuyo objetivo no fue otro que criticar y burlarse de la primera parte del Quijote. El tal Avellaneda algunos afirman que era Lope de Vega y otros creen que fue Jerónimo de Pasamonte, un soldado y escritor de la batalla de Lepanto. Ambos fueron atacados en la primera parte del Quijote por Miguel de Cervantes, por lo que algo de venganza había en toda esta historia.

Si no se quiso acordar del nombre del lugar de la Mancha, ¿a qué se debía? Quizás le habían tratado mal en dicha localidad. Dicen que ese lugar es Villanueva de los Infantes, pero es imposible porque en el s. XVI, esa localidad no pertenecía al Común de la Mancha. ¿Cuántos pueblos eran del Común de la Mancha en el s. XVI? 24 en total, por lo que el Ingenioso Hidalgo debe ser de uno de estos 24 pueblos, y además no debe nombrarse en la obra cervantina, por lo que el número de candidatos se reduce considerablemente. ¿Cuáles eran esas 24 localidades? Alcázar de San Juan, Arenales de San Gregorio, Campo de Criptana, Cebezamesada, Corral de Almaguer, El Toboso, Horcajo de Santiago, La Puebla de Almoradiel, La Villa de Don Fadrique, Los Hinojosos, Manjavacas, Miguel Esteban, Mota del Cuervo, Palomarejos, Pedro Muñoz, Pozorrubio, Quintanar de la Orden, Santa María de los Llanos, Socuéllamos, Tomelloso, Villaescusa de Haro, Villamayor de Santiago, Villanueva de Alcardete y Villaverde.

Y es muy llamativo que, habiendo tres grandes pueblos de aquel Común de la Mancha, uno nunca sea nombrado, un pueblo con casas solariegas, hidalgos, barbero, cura, licenciados y comercio y, de hecho, era el segundo más poblado en 1603, con un total de 1.228 habitantes. Los otros dos grandes pueblos del Común de La Mancha de aquel entonces eran El Toboso y Campo de Criptana, y Cervantes los nombra en su obra maestra.

Estudios recientes y minuciosos de historiadores como Rufino Rojo y Félix Fernández-Clemente revelan que el pueblo “maldito” debía ser un pueblo cercano a Quintanar de la Orden y no debería estar lejos de El Toboso, el lugar de residencia de la bella Dulcinea, ya que, desde allí, Rocinante llegaba casi solo a su cuadra. Un pueblo que jamás tuvo molinos y que por ello debieron parecerle gigantes y extraños al protagonista en su locura. Y pueblos manchegos sin molinos no había tantos.

La mujer de Cervantes, Catalina de Salazar, era de Esquivias, no muy lejos del norte de este Común de la Mancha. Solo un pueblo de estos veinticuatro, el pueblo maldito, se puso de parte de Carlos I de España y V de Alemania en la Guerra de las Comunidades, siendo hoy la Muy Noble y Leal Villa que aún conserva en su escudo. Se trata de un pueblo que obtuvo favores en detrimento del resto, entre ellos, la no lejana Esquivias de los familiares comerciantes de don Miguel. El caballero de la Orden de Santiago y secretario de Maese Alonso de Cárdenas, Comendador de Ocaña y embajador de Fernando el Católico en Roma, era de este pueblo maldito, Juan Collado, de ahí que años más tarde se volcara con su rey. De hecho, su hermano, el capitán Antón Collado, fue quien venció en la batalla de El Romeral y de la Sisla de Toledo a los comuneros. El rey, Carlos I, lo agradeció por carta enviada desde Bruselas. Hoy, en honor a los hermanos Collado hay una capilla en la iglesia del pueblo maldito, la más antigua de dicha iglesia.

De este pueblo era Martín Gasco, maestrescuela de la Catedral de Sevilla y posteriormente obispo de Cádiz, que no llegó a ocupar su cargo porque murió en aquel mismo año de 1563 y de ahí que no figure en el listado oficial de obispos de Cádiz. También fue embajador de Carlos I ante el papa Clemente VII. Nombró a su sobrino, Andrés Gasco, maestreescuela de la catedral e inquisidor general de Sevilla, y a Alonso Gasco como racionero de la catedral, un tipo que está enterrado en la mismísima catedral sevillana, leyéndose en su lápida de alabastro su cargo y su procedencia e indicándose que era sobrino de Martín Gasco. Cuarenta ciudadanos de este pueblo fueron a las Indias con el permiso de Andrés Gasco, y no así Cervantes, que hubo de conformarse con Lepanto, cayendo preso y resultando manco (en realidad lo que perdió fue la movilidad de su mano izquierda). Descendiente de estos emigrantes a América es Edward L. Romero, embajador de EEUU en España de la administración George W. Bush entre 1998 y 2001, y recibido en el aeropuerto Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas por el alcalde del pueblo maldito. Hoy tiene una plaza en su honor en esta localidad manchega y los indios arapahoe trajeron un tributo y bandera a la ermita ubicada en lo alto de un pequeño otero.

Como recaudador de trigo y aceite, Cervantes confiscó un poco más de lo debido en tierras andaluzas y fue excomulgado en Écija por el racionero de la catedral de Sevilla, Alonso Gasco, de la misma familia. Hoy estos Gasco tienen la capilla más espectacular en la iglesia plateresca del pueblo maldito. Una capilla mandada construir por Martín Gasco, con una reja del s. XVI y en honor a la Magdalena, ya que también fue el fundador del Colegio de la Magdalena de Salamanca.

En 1594 Cervantes acude a Granada para recaudar impuestos de la mano de Francisco Suárez Gasco, hermano de Pedro Gasco, consejero de Felipe II e inquisidor de la Suprema, e hijo de Juana García-Gasco, hermana del obispo de Cádiz. ¡Otra vez los Gasco! “Con la iglesia hemos dado, Sancho”

Las comisiones de lo recaudado se las entregó a Simón Freire, y tras la bancarrota de éste, Cervantes regresó a Sevilla para demostrar su inocencia, pero fue denunciado por Francisco Suárez Gasco, del clan familiar del pueblo maldito. Fue condenado y llevado a la cárcel de Sevilla, la más grande del reino entonces, un lugar peligroso. Fue liberado más tarde por el rey, pero para entonces se cree que ya había comenzado su obra, el “besteseller” por antonomasia. Es curioso como este apellido, el García-Gasco de esta localidad maldita, recientemente dio un cardenal, el de Valencia, Agustín García-Gasco, fallecido en Roma en 2011.

El Manco de Lepanto terminó sus días viviendo en la calle León de Madrid, esquina con la hoy calle Cervantes, la misma calle en la que vivía Lope de Vega. ¿De quién era esa casa en la que vivió? Pues de su casero, Gabriel Martínez, un tipo que provenía del pueblo maldito, un tipo del que Cervantes se hizo buen amigo. Además, el hijo de Gabriel Martínez era Francisco Martínez, capellán del convento de las Trinitarias, el mismo que ejerció de presbítero y testigo en su entierro, el 23 de abril de 1616. Francisco Martínez fue, además de su casero, su testamentario. Recientemente se han descubierto los restos del genio de la literatura en este convento madrileño.

Es curioso que, para tener tanta relación con este pueblo, el segundo en tamaño del Común de la Mancha de aquella época, no lo nombre ni una sola vez en una obra de más de mil páginas, ¿verdad? Esto es solo una teoría y jamás se podrá probar nada, por supuesto, de ahí que el averiguar qué pueblo tiene el dudoso honor de ser ese pueblo maldito sea algo casi romántico, una quimera.

Lo demás todos lo sabemos, y es que, si Cervantes se puede asociar a unas líneas, esas son las de “En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme…” esa obra inmortal que habla de un lugar del que no debió tener gratos recuerdos, un pueblo maldito para él en su época de recaudador de impuestos, un lugar que le marcó y que le persiguió, el lugar de residencia de Alonso Quijano, ese lugar en donde la Mancha empieza a ser, Corral de Almaguer.

I swapped passports recently. No, I haven’t decided to get Spanish citizenship. It’s the passport Susan Sontag talked about. The one to the kingdom of the sick.

I remember reading Sontag’s Illness as Metaphor as a pretentious teenager. I was probably puffing on a cigarette as I read, glowing with youth, oblivious, unmarked.

“Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick,” wrote Sontag. “Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.”

So, it has come. The switching of the passports. It is something wholly internal. On the outside everything is exactly as it was the moment before your diagnosis. But in a slow blink, you step into this other world where you no longer have plans, but hospital appointments.

I felt a lump in my left breast in early August. It is difficult to find the word to describe that instant. Ricochet, maybe? There was the echo of an infinite array of women, who had all lived this moment, this touch, this gasp. There was recognition in the heartbeat when my fingers touched the skin, and it was unyielding.

A week later, I was on a biopsy table, and a week after that, was definitively diagnosed as hosting a carcinoma in my mammary. The worst of it was probably the two days immediately following the news that I needed a biopsy because of  the “highly suspicious,” mass that the mammogram had detected. I cried a lot. I imagined the *worst*.

If I am honest there was some pleasure to be had in those moments of wallowing. Imagining other people’s eulogies about you is quite flattering. Or at least, it was in my imagination. “She was such a lovely person…great writer…good friend…” etc.

I suppose the reason for my overwrought reaction is the talismanic nature of cancer. It is not an illness as much as a metaphor for life’s deadly fragility. The weight of the word in the mouth, conjures up bald heads and painful thinness and funerals.

But in the weeks that have followed, I feel the unwriterly need to reject metaphors. To name things for what they are. Ducts and tumours and cells and lesions; facts, not fear. I am not “fighting” cancer, because it is not a war. I am not “surviving” it, at least no more than every human alive is “surviving” life, the only certainty of which is death.

Sontag wrote of cancer, “it’s not so much a disease of time as a pathology of space. Its principal metaphors refer to topography, (cancer "spreads" or "proliferates" or is "diffused"; tumors are surgically "excised"), and its most dreaded consequence, short of death, is the mutilation or amputation of part of the body. Cancer is notorious for attacking parts of the body (colon, bladder, rectum, breast, cervix, prostate, testicles) that are embarrassing to acknowledge. Having a tumor generally arouses some feelings of shame.”

I’m lucky to have been diagnosed decades after Sontag wrote this, when some of the tragic mystery that once infused the disease has been replaced by histopathology and gene-analysis. I have not felt any shame in being tumorous. But I have felt guilt.

I feel guilty telling others, because it makes them sad, or panicky. Family has their own moments of wallowing in worst-case scenarios. Friends feel sympathy yes, but also dread. If it could happen to Pallavi, they think, it could happen to me. Women silently add “get a mammography” to their mental to-do lists.

And then there is the fact that I am naturally a transparent person (this post being a case in point). When someone asks me, “how are things?” I reply, “fine, thanks,” because really neither the doorman at the nearby coffee shop, nor I, want an involved conversation about carcinomas. But it feels disingenuous. A lie. I am not “fine.” I have cancer. The thought balloons up within me sometimes and chokes me with the need to protest the fakeness, when I have to present myself – in my writings or to a new acquaintance - as someone untouched by diagnoses and treatments.

But also, when it comes to those who do know, I often desire to discuss anything at all, except my cancer. The tumour recedes to a corner of my consciousness, when I’m enjoying Madrid’s fall weather, or debating Putin’s next moves, or biting into a truly exceptional baklava. Ask me what I’m writing about, not about cancer, I want to tell the overly solicitous.

The edifice of modern medicine is pacifying. The hospital I go to is a private facility that specialized in cancer treatment. It reminds me somewhat of a small airport terminal. The registration front desk, down to the uniforms of the staff, is reminiscent of flight check-in. The nurses are like air hostesses, asking you take a seat, and the doctors are like pilots telling you, not to worry, it’s just a bit of turbulence.

The place is always teeming. So many people with cancer: high society women and taciturn teenagers, the disoriented elderly and the tech bros who never seem to stop taking calls even as they are being wheeled away. Cancer patients are not a demographic, they are a microcosm of society.

These last few weeks, I’ve discovered just how cancerous the world is. Not a single person that I’ve shared my diagnosis with, has failed to tell me about an aunt, or mother, or best friend with the same disease. Others are “survivors” themselves, although I hadn’t known it.

It’s a pandemic, someone said to me. And indeed, one in seven women in the EU develop breast cancer at some point in their life. (https://ecis.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pdf/Breast_cancer_factsheet-Oct_2020.pdf).

During my initial meetings with doctors and technicians, I was always asked the same, odd-seeming, questions. The age that I got my period. The age that I had my first child. (This second question caused some unintended hilarity on the grounds of my imperfect Spanish. I thought I was being asked the age of my first child, rather than the age I gave birth to him. When I replied, “13,” it caused a little consternation until everyone figured out the miscommunication. Levity is always welcome in cancer.)

It turns out that getting your period before the age of 12 and having your first child after the age of 30 are both risk factors in developing breast cancer.¹ Who knew? I didn’t. Or maybe I did and had just filtered it out. There is only so much risk we can be alive to, in order to behave like we are living instead of dying – both of which happen to be true.

My prognosis has taken time in becoming clear, but in essence I am luckier than some, and unluckier than others. My cancer has not metastasized, but it is invasive. However, it is a type of invasive that responds well to treatment. They may even “cure” it, although that’s not a cancer word that most would use with confidence. Us tumour-carriers have treatment plans and survivorship (yuck) pathways.

But even if not “cured,” in the sense that we foolishly feel a cough is – that is until the next time it recurs- the knowledge of cancer, at least for me, has been absorbed into the body. It is no longer so granular, so present, so poky – but more diffused, like salt mixing with water.

I think I am lucky, because the one question that has never occurred to me regarding the diagnosis, despite being a 46-year-old women in reasonable health, is, “Why me?” Because the real question is, “Why not me?”

On Crossing the Boundaries of History, Gender, and Culture in Arthur Golden’s

Memoirs of a Geisha

Artists trained in traditional Japanese art forms such as dance and music, geisha are chief images of the Japanese culture for Westerners — even as the geisha tradition has virtually disappeared. A long story of fetishization ensued by Western writers has created a Western construct of the geisha as an erotic and exotic embodiment of a doll-like type of oriental femininity. So when the novel Memoirs of a Geisha by the American writer Arthur Golden was published in 1997, a book that showed a more personal and intricate image of geisha than of its precedents, scholars and journalist alike assumed that the novel followed this long-standing Western tradition. However, criticism took a different turn this time; instead of scrutinizing the work, it turned and looked at the author.

While the public reception of Golden’s novel was fantastic as it became an instant bestseller and received acclaim worldwide, critics and journalists were concerned about the boundaries that Golden had to cross to write the novel. A year after the novel’s publication, Dinitia Smith mentioned in The New York Times that to “write ‘Memoirs of a Geisha,’ the fictional reminiscences of a geisha in Kyoto during the 1930’s and 40’s, Arthur Golden, a 42-year-old father of two, and an American at that, had to cross the three great boundaries, gender, nationality and history”.

Moreover, in 1999, The John Adams Institute, an independent podium for American culture in the Netherlands, invited Golden for a discussion on Memoirs of a Geisha. In this discussion, Golden was asked the following by the moderator, Anja Meulenbelt:

he is writing in the first person, but he is three times removed from the actual person in the book. First, because he is a westerner writing about Japanese culture [...]. The second is that he is writing as a man about a woman [...] and there is the difference in time because he is writing about a time that obviously he has not lived in himself. So my question is [...]: How dare you? (The John Adams Institute Rec., 8:17-8:53)

Meulenbelt’s question suggests that she condemns the author for appropriating gender and culture, and not being contemporaneous with the novel. By pointing out that Golden crossed those boundaries, scholars have questioned the authenticity of the book and, through this questioning, have accused it of being Orientalist.

Contrary to these beliefs, this paper aims to theoretically support that Arthur Golden’s identity should not be seen as a restraint for his portrayal of the geisha culture, and much less shape the criticism against Memoirs of a Geisha. The bottom line is that to analyze Memoirs of a Geisha, Golden’s age, gender, and ethnicity only impose limits. Thus, Golden’s identity should not be inherently problematic because the text should speak for itself.

Firstly, before explaining why Golden’s identity should not be a cause for literary restraint, the notion of crossing boundaries needs to be discussed. This notion is limiting because it presents bias by bringing the author’s identity to the surface. In “The Death of the Author,” Roland Barthes mentions that writing and writer are and should be unrelated because to “give a text an Author is to impose a limit on that text, to furnish it with a final signified, to’ close the writing” (147). Furthermore, simultaneously, the concept of closing the writing “suits criticism very well, the latter then allotting itself the important, task of discovering the Author (or its hypostases: society, history, psyche, liberty) beneath the work: when the Author has been found, the text is ‘explained’ — victory to the critic (Barthes 147). This reasoning could explain why the crossing of history, gender, and culture in Memoirs of a Geisha is so often assumed to be problematic. As Barthes suggests, critics might have decided about the work before reading it. However, as it seems that critics resist killing the author, at least, instead of negating their imaginative expression, fiction writers should be made accountable for how they have crossed these boundaries in their works rather than if they have done so.

The first reason why crossing the boundaries of history, gender, and culture should not be an impediment is that fiction is about imagination. To negate fiction writers to imagine what it is like to be someone other than themselves is to negate their right to work on their craft. The problem that critics have with crossing boundaries is that they believe that there is a "need for authenticity" (Coombe 254) and that crossing boundaries negate this authenticity. However, such critics forget that fiction is not about authenticity but about purporting “to be an authentic account of the actual experiences of individuals” (Watt 27) through the use of imagination.

By overlooking the nature of fiction, scholars have found Memoirs of a Geisha to be problematic due to its air of authenticity: “the issue I raise here is not who is more ‘right,’ but rather that of construction and how Sayuri is not only a fictional construct but also one constructed to feel ‘real.’” (Allison 391). As Watt highlights, “the novel’s air of total authenticity, indeed, does tend to authorise confusion on this point: and the tendency of some Realists and Naturalists to forget that the accurate transcription of actuality does not necessarily produce a work of any real truth” (31-32). The intention to construct Sayuri, the protagonist of Memoirs, with an authentic quality, is an inherent characteristic of the novel, and thus, should not be in itself problematic.

Similarly, others have found the techniques that Golden used to create this air of authenticity to be questionable — ignoring the nature of the novel as a literary form anew. In her essay, “Orientalism and the Binary of Fact and Fiction in Memoirs of a Geisha,” Kimiko Akita mentions that “Memoirs of a Geisha opens with a chapter titled, most disingenuously, ‘Translator’s Notes,’ which consists of a soliloquy by ‘Jakob Haarhuis,’ a fictional professor of Japanese history at New York University and the fictional translator of the book” (5). Later she mentions that the Translator’s Notes allows “Arthur Golden, alias ‘Jakob Haarhuis,’ [to] detach[...] and distance[...] himself from the story, which allows him to engage in Orientalizing” (Akita 5). Akita has failed to recognize that to construct this air of authenticity, the novel uses different devices such as the Translator’s Notes section or the fact that the novel is named Memoirs of a Geisha while being a novel. These devices are in the novel to evoke the air of authenticity that novels purport to have.

Of the boundaries that according to critics and journalists Golden has crossed in Memoirs of a Geisha, history is the most surprising Traditionally, crossing the boundary of history has been part of the writer’s literary license. Furthermore, considering that Golden earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College in art history, specializing in Japanese art, and a master’s degree in Japanese history from Columbia University (Golden 497), it seems unreasonable that a Japanese historian should not be able to cross the boundary of history. All the more due to the accuracy with which the novel portrays historical facts, a feat that has been even acknowledged by critics that have incriminated Golden’s work: “Golden has done research to portray Gion with an accuracy that most scholars I know agree is good or certainly good enough” (Allison 397). Moreover, to say that one should only portray a setting contemporary to oneself goes against human and literary fascination for the past and future. In these terms, humanity would fail to keep works such as The Name of the Rose, One Hundred Years of Solitude, or Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Similarly, Memoirs of a Geisha has been selected for scrutiny for crossing the boundary of gender: a “white man born and raised in the United States, Golden never experienced the geisha world first hand” (Akita 3). However, crossing the boundaries of gender is a regressive notion. In How Novels Work, John Mullan mentions that a male author writing a novel narrated by a female is how the Novel in English commenced: “[o]ddly enough, the Novel in English began this way, with men writing as women. Daniel Defoeʼs Moll Flanders and Roxana (1724), are the supposed first-person accounts of female characters” (53).

Of course, the opposite has also happened — some females have written male narrators, such as Emily Brönte in Wuthering Heights or Mary Shelley in Frankenstein. The liberty of crossing the gender boundary was considered part of the writer’s literary license until some feminist theories questioned male writers writing female narrators. The idea suggested is that men writing first-person female narratives risk overemphasizing characteristics that are perceived to be different between genders and that this would consequently problematize an authentic representation of gender. However, the notion of crossing the gender boundary contradicts recent feminists and, more specifically, gender theories because it regards gender as a binary opposition female/male. As suggested by postmodernists such as Jacques Derrida or Michel Foucault, identity is by nature fluid, and this includes gender. As Smith Hall comments, “the discourse of the postmodern [...] is not something new but a kind of recognition of where identity always was at” (p.115). The problem with the notion of crossing the boundary of gender is that it negates fluidity, bringing back the binary male/female. Ultimately, the concept of crossing the boundary of gender seems a regressive one.

In spite of what was just said, the most controversial border that Golden crossed in Memoirs of a Geisha was that of culture. In literature, crossing cultures is nothing new; however, nowadays, cultural appropriation is a hot topic that has become controversial if done. Recently, many conflicts derived from cultural appropriation have been reported worldwide. For instance, the University of Ottawa suspended its yoga classes because it is a practice that originated in ancient India (Pells), and the students at Oberlin College complained that the bánh mì offered at the campus was culinary appropriation from another culture (Friedersdorf). This last example is puzzling due to the nature of bánh mìs — a dish that combines national culinary traditions from Vietnam and France.

Cultural appropriation is not a new concept; it first appeared in 1945, in Arthur E. Christy’s essay “European cultural appropriation from the Orient,” but it is now that it has gained some popularity outside academia. This paper will use the definition by Richard Rogers, who defines cultural appropriation as “the use of a culture’s symbols, artifacts, genres, rituals, or technologies by members of another culture” (474). Something to take into consideration is that although it may co-occur, cultural appropriation does not necessarily involve cultural insensitivity or stereotyping.

Culture is fluid and ever-evolving. Culture interacts, morphs, and integrates into other cultures due to its tremendous value. Moreover, scholars such as Richard Rogers believe that cultural appropriation “is inescapable when cultures come into contact, including virtual or representational contact” (474). Abolishing cultural appropriation would negate any interaction with a culture that is not your own, something implausible. Moreover, not being able to interact with something beyond what is familiar would be detrimental to our ever-growing multicultural and globalized society, which makes the abolition of cultural appropriation futile. Besides that, as Kwame Anthony Appiah comments, the “key question in the use of symbols or regalia associated with another identity group is not: What are my rights of ownership? Rather it’s: Are my actions disrespectful?” (Appiah). As previously explained, appropriation does not necessarily co-exist with cultural insensitivity, stereotyping, or disrespectful signs, and even so, any token of cultural appropriation is received as something negative. According to Appiah’s persuasive case, fiction writers such as Golden should be made accountable for how symbols or regalia are being used rather than if they have done so. Instead of negating cultural borrowings, there should be constructive encouragement.

Although cultural appropriation has a negative connotation, this natural process could be quite positive, and it is, as James O. Young suggests, “wrongfully harmful or offensive less often than some people suggest” (152). For instance, Osamu Tezuka, one of the early pioneers of manga and anime, two of the most recognized art forms of modern Japan, acknowledged the influence that United States’ animation had in his art:

In reality, his art style owes a great debt not only to Disney, but to Max Fleischer (creator of the big-eyed Betty Boop), as well as Japanese artists who preceded him, such as Ryûichi Yokoyama, Suihô Tagawa, and Noboru Ôshiro. Toward the end of his life, Tezuka was more than willing to admit that his style was a potpourri of influences”. (Schodt 44)

Moreover, before finding his style, Tezuka deliberately borrowed, and thus appropriated, the style and stories of some of Disney’s animations which he was an avid fan of:

anyone familiar with comics can see that Tezuka’s biggest stylistic inspiration is the rounded style of Walt Disney, whose work he adored. In his early years, Tezuka had spent hours copying the style of Disney characters in comics and animation, and in 1951 and 1952 he even illustrated Japanese versions of The Story of Walt Disney, as well Disney’s Bambi and Pinocchio for Manga Shônen magazine”. (Schodt 43-44)

Tezuka would end up creating Astro Boy, the first weekly TV animated Japanese series, now known worldwide as anime. Through Astro Boy, Tezuka would gain recognition in the United States — among his admirers: Walt Disney and Stanley Kubrick. As Roland Kelts mentions, “the mutual admiration between [Tezuka and Disney] is well documented” (44). Tezuka’s example of borrowing and appreciation illustrates that, on many occasions, cultural appropriation can be framed as a positive exchange of ideas — a natural process in a globalized world, and a process of mutual appreciation between cultures. If cultures were unable to borrow elements from other cultures, it would be detrimental to humanity’s evolution. Manga and anime, as they exist nowadays, might not exist otherwise. As James O. Young believes, the broader history of borrowings is one of enrichment (152).

Furthermore, in this day and age, cultural appropriation is inevitable. Not even a ban by the Japanese Government due to the conflicts between America and Japan during World War II could stop Japanese artists from borrowing American pop culture:

Japanese cinemas had been showing American and European animations since 1931, and the popularity of Disney and Fleischer brothers’ animations inspired a number of akahon artists to produce pirated or imitated comics, featuring Mickey Mouse or Popeye. It was impossible to completely shut out their influences even after the official ban on American comics”. (Power 39)

This example shows that shutting down borrowings is practically impossible — that is why it is vital to encourage borrowing in a constructive manner.

This paper has a main conclusion: from a theoretical standpoint, the crossing of boundaries in Memoirs of a Geisha should not be considered inherently problematic. Golden’s identity should not be a restraint for his portrayal of the geisha culture because what the novel as a form does is cross boundaries through the writer’s imagination. Moreover, artists are constantly crossing boundaries, but this is harmful less often than is suggested. It is my conviction that the literary world would flourish, more specifically, in issues of identity and appropriation, if readers looked at how works are crossing boundaries rather than if they are doing so. For this reason, further studies should be conducted to look at how Arthur Golden crosses the boundaries of history, gender, and culture in Memoirs of a Geisha.

From Guernica to Okhtyrka: Narrating Conflict from Spain to Ukraine

A pernicious term has developed in the public, “Ukraine fatigue.” A burnout of empathy and compassion for the victims of this war has set in more than a year since the Putin’s attempt to seize Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. In this regard, the humanities serve as a means to remind humanity that they have a responsibility to remember (R2R) the human victims of the war, that they are not just some figures one reads about in papers or watch on the news.

This article adopts the technique used by Elizabeth Dauphinee in The Politics of Exile, a 2013 academic work that employs storytelling, where the scholar serves as the protagonist while conducting research on the Bosnian civil war that raged between 1992 and 1995.

Abandoning the generally depersonalized nature of academic writing, her work focuses on the individuals caught up in this conflict, taking the reader into their personal lives and domestic spaces. She creates a synergy, a dialogue between the humanities and the social sciences.

Following Dauphinee’s approach, this article focuses on the first day of the 2022 war, from the apartment of Maria Marchenko, a Ukrainian researcher, working in an international NGO, to an airplane where I am very close to the warzone, flying to Turkey and then Lebanon to deliver medicine to Maria Shakir, my grandmother’s older sister, another person whose life was irrevocably transformed by conflicts, from World War One to the Lebanese civil war that began in the Seventies.

This tale of two Marias, from Spain to Ukraine to Lebanon, is one of the greater Mediterranean, which has witnessed millennia of conflicts and continues to be a site of war to this day.

It’s close to 5 am on 24 February 2022 in Kyiv. Explosions nearby jolted Maria Marchenko from her sleep. She lives near the airport, which has just been hit by a barrage of ballistic missiles.

At the same time in Madrid, it’s 6am, and I am packing for my trip to Lebanon in a few hours to visit my grandmother’s older sister, Maria Shakir, delivering her the pain reliever Panadol and US dollars, both in short supply in there.

While I pack, Maria called her parents in her hometown, Okhtyrka, in the Sumy region, 50 kilometers from the border. Her hands trembled as she was not sure if they or her grandparents were alive.

She couldn’t find the words to tell her mother so early in the morning that the invasion had begun. Her father, however, had already heard the news.

She hadn’t packed a bag because she did not believe that war would erupt. In some way she felt if she did pack her bag for such a scenario, it would eventually manifest. War materialized regardless of her decision.

She hurried, collecting her documents, warm clothing, her laptop, and chargers. She found some photos with family and friends and put them in her bag, just to preserve memories of a more innocent time.

When she left her apartment for the bomb shelter, Maria witnessed traffic jams and long lines at pharmacies and grocery stores, living in real life scenes she had only seen in blockbuster films about the apocalypse.

I tried to call Maria before my flight, a four-hour journey to Turkey where I would be cut off from any means of communication. Fortunately, as I am about to board the plane and have to turn off my phone, she picks up, her voice choking, simply declaring her wish for peace.

As I board a civilian airliner at Madrid Barajas airport for my flight, I have an historical epiphany. On 26 April 1937, what was a German civilian airliner had been retrofitted with bomb bay doors. It was designed to carry civilians over mass distances. Instead, a fleet of these planes would carry bombs, weapons of mass destruction over mass distances, to bomb the masses, civilians in a Spanish town called Guernica.

Picasso’s iconic painting of the event depicts an innovation in modern warfare, when civilians are looking up to the sky in shock, as for the first time in human history death is coming from above.

While I think about Guernica, in Okhtyrka, the battle for Maria’s hometown begins, 11am Ukraine time. Here the battles break out in residential areas and soon the fuel air explosives (FAE) are launched over the town. The word “air” is essential to life, breathed in through our lungs. The weapon uses what gives us life to take away life. The FAE first detonates an initial explosion, sucking away oxygen from the air, while releasing a ball of gas that can encompass an entire neighborhood. Within a split second, a second explosion ignites the cloud of gas, creating a massive fireball, literally hell on earth. A hell on earth that is home for Maria’s parents. It’s as if the mythological dragon from the Tolkien novels has attacked her hometown, with the potential of inflicting real-life death on her parents.

The war in Ukraine is not a simple war between Russians and Ukrainians. It has split families, more akin to the Spanish civil war in which the Guernica tragedy unfolded. Many Ukrainian families have relatives in Russia, including Maria’s. Her mother’s sister left for Russia 25 years ago. They were torn due to the conflict. Her aunt would post pro-Putin posts on social media appealing to the values ​​of “fraternal peoples.” The rift between the two sides of the family will probably never heal.

As my plane descends into Istanbul airport, from the window I scan the horizon, knowing Ukraine is to the north of me. As I travel to meet one Maria, to bring medicine and money to keep her alive, I pray for the other Maria to be protected and kept alive.

When I arrive in Istanbul airport, it is unusually empty. I see the screen with a list of cancelled flights that were destined for Ukraine.

Two hours later my plane from Istanbul takes off to Lebanon, while not too far away planes hover over places like Kyiv and Okhtyrka, raining bombs and missiles on these cities.

Fours hour later, I am in a small home in Zahle, Lebanon. Maria Shakir is 98 years old. She is elated to see me and has prepared for me fresh hummus with olive oil and sesame seeds, falafel, ma’lube, a rice dish with steamed chicken, cinnamon and pine nuts. There is a storm in the high mountains of Lebanon, but she has the heater on. While I am in the most comfortable setting, my second home, Maria’s second home is underneath the earth, a cold, underground bomb shelter. While I have a sumptuous Lebanon feast, Maria in Kyiv occasionally comes up for air, to find soup during the ephemeral lull of security, until the sirens call her back.

I asked Maria in Zahle to turn on the TV so I could find news about Maria in Kyiv. My Maria in Zahle, watching the Lebanese news, frets when she learns that the grain supply from Ukraine will be interrupted, increasing the price of bread in Lebanon. It’s fortunate I have arrived with US dollars to help her adjust to this crisis.

On top of the TV set there is an image of Jesus Christ. I am Muslim. Maria and my entire grandmother’s family is Christian. The country of Lebanon tore itself apart because its Muslims and Christians could not see what unites them, and instead focused on the narcissism of small differences, plunging the country into a civil war from 1975 to 1991. Yet here I am, a Muslim, flying across the Mediterranean to help my Christian great-aunt, bringing her money, medicine, and my love. That was my 24 of February 2022. My Maria in Ukraine on that day experienced a different 24 hours, born out of hate.

The architects of invasion could only focus on hate, in their minds, dark, vacuous caverns where only enmity and evil exist, and thus they created unnecessary differences between the two nations. My Maria in Ukraine became another victim in this tragedy, the history of hate.
