Sound like you? Solve your MBA application doubts with this straightforward guide and see how you could enroll at IE Business School.

How do you qualify for an MBA?

MBA applicants have around 2 to 5 years of post-bachelor’s work experience, with top programs averaging five or six. However, it’s not just about how long you’ve been working—it’s about what you’ve done with that time. Admissions teams look for candidates who show a clear upward trajectory, take initiative, solve real problems and have made tangible improvements in their organizations. Whether you’ve built something from the ground up or led a team, what matters is that you’ve made an impact.

At IE Business School, we look for those same qualities—but we also go deeper. We want people who are ready to transform. The International MBA challenges you to be curious about your long-term purpose. You don’t need a traditional leadership title to prove your potential—what we care about is your mindset. Are you entrepreneurial? Are you open to new perspectives? Have you taken ownership of your growth? These qualities matter most to us.

Through our admissions process, we aim to understand who you are, how you think and how you’ll contribute to our global, collaborative learning environment.

Our International MBA attracts candidates who are ready to make bold moves. If you’re looking to pivot industries, that works for us. Or maybe you want to scale a business, or step into a leadership role. It’s all relevant, and our curriculum will support you in that journey. If you’re someone who sees change as an opportunity, there could be a place for you at IE Business School.

When should I start applying for an MBA?

It’s tricky to know when to apply for an MBA. Our advice is to apply as soon as possible—ideally six months before your intended start date. At IE Business School, we have a rolling admissions policy. This differentiates us from other business schools as it keeps us agile, ensuring your applications are reviewed continuously rather than by fixed deadlines. While this offers flexibility, it also means that spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Waiting too long could harm your chances—not because you’re not qualified, but because the class might already be full.

Applying early also gives you a practical advantage, especially if you’re an international candidate. Remember, the student visa process can take time. By starting your application early, you have time to gather documents, complete interviews and finalize travel plans without added pressure.

This early start can also open up more opportunities for scholarships and financial aid, which are often awarded earlier in the cycle.

From start to finish, getting your material through the door early is the key when learning how to apply for an MBA.

How to do our International MBA admissions process in 4 steps

Across all master’s programs, we have a standardized admissions process. International MBA applications are no different, with an easy-to-follow structure to make everything that bit simpler.

1. Submit your application

Start your application online by filling out the form and uploading all required documents: your résumé, academic transcripts, diploma, references, and a personal statement—feel free to choose a format that best reflects your strengths, such as a written essay, video or presentation. If applicable, include proof of English proficiency. Each program may have specific requirements, so be sure to check the program-specific admissions page for full details before submitting.

2. Take the admissions test

Depending on your chosen program, you’ll need to complete the IE Global Admissions Test (ieGAT), GMAT, GRE, or another approved test. To move forward, complete at least 25% of the application and pay the application fee. Some programs may waive the admissions test entirely, so consult your program’s page to confirm what’s needed. Be sure to prepare using available resources and practice materials if taking the ieGAT.

3. Complete the online assessment

Once your application is submitted, you’ll be asked to complete a 10-minute online assessment consisting of timed video and written questions. This step helps us evaluate your communication skills, personality, and quick thinking. A practice round is available to help you feel confident and ready—use it to get comfortable with the format and expectations.

4. Attend the personal interview

Candidates who meet all requirements will be invited to a personal interview with an MBA Admissions Manager. This is your opportunity to go deeper into your background, motivations, and fit for IE Business School. The interview can take place online or in person, and you’ll receive your admission decision by email within two weeks of completing this final step.
