IE Law School’s Master of Laws (LL.M.) is designed to give students a firm grasp of the legal sector with a practical approach to learning and professional development. Our unique Legal Immersion Experience gives students hands-on experience through living, learning and working in some of the most impressive legal hubs across the world.
As part of the Master of Laws (LL.M.), students have the opportunity to participate in a Legal Immersion Experience. Depending on their chosen specialization, students visit different legal hubs across the world. This year, those studying International Business Law and International Taxation visited London, gaining a unique perspective into where their career paths may take them.
Bringing the legal world to life
The Master of Laws (LL.M.) also offers students the opportunity to study for their Postgraduate Diploma of Expert (PgDip) certification, with four specializations available to allow students to tailor their experience at IE University to their professional goals.
Likewise, the Legal Immersion Experience is tailored to these career paths to enable students to extract the best insights and connections possible.
The International Business Law specialization teaches students to design, structure, manage and complete cross-border corporate transactions, gaining a well-rounded understanding of legal project management, effective conflict resolution, global business and drafting, as well as the soft skills needed to thrive in a multicultural workplace.
Meanwhile, students specializing in International Taxation will earn the comparative and international tax knowledge to develop, structure and confidently manage taxation strategies. They’ll gain a background in the fundamentals of business law and a holistic overview of the taxation landscape, ensuring they understand the tax implications of global business models, as well as enabling them to identify tax risks and opportunities as they relate to corporations.
With industry visits to law firms specializing in these two areas, the Legal Immersion Experience in London was a future lawyer’s dream to help them discover their potential.
As a leading legal hub, the trip to London gave these students a unique insight into the legal sector, with a focus on how they can develop their career paths in their chosen field. Through a series of visits to some of London’s most prestigious law firms, including Simmons & Simmons, Squire Patton Boggs, Allen & Overy and Skadden, students got a taste of what the future could hold for them.
An enriching learning experience
Having already gained some professional experience in Geneva, Kalia Tsimaratos was excited at the prospect of visiting London as part of her Master of Laws (LL.M.). As a firm believer that technology is the future, a highlight from her experience was at Fuse, Allen & Overy’s tech innovation hub, where she learned about how technology helps lawyers. She also found the practical workshops very useful and is sure to put her new insights to work during her program and future career. Kalia also had the opportunity to connect with other Master of Laws (LL.M.) students and get to know them better in this international environment.
Jesús Díaz Villasante, who specializes in International Taxation, also shared his experiences with us and how he benefited from seeing how leading law firms operate on a day-to-day basis. For him, witnessing the hustle and bustle of these law firms firsthand really exposed him to the reality of his future. In particular, Jesús learned a lot from Simmons & Simmons, gaining a deeper understanding of their innovative vision and how they do research—something he hadn’t truly considered before.
As part of his experience, Jesús also learned about how lawyers at Allen & Overy operate and the new technologies they use to develop employee efficiency and reaction times, which, in turn, can reduce costs for the client by minimizing time wasted.
Another Master of Laws (LL.M.) student, Maria Luiza Lins, described the Legal Immersion Experience as unique—no other university offers such an opportunity with as many networking and practical experiences. Immersed in an international environment, Maria Luiza found that the experience proved to her how the legal market is evolving rapidly, especially amidst today’s geopolitical tensions. To future students participating in the Legal Immersion Experience, she encourages them to know what they want to do, analyze their skills and be open-minded to make the most of the experience and the network available to them.
The students who attended the Legal Immersion Experience had a networking cocktail with IE University alumni in London, where they were able to share experiences and insights and learn from each other.
Looking back on their experiences in London, Kalia, Jesús and Maria Luiza highlighted the hands-on nature of the Legal Immersion Experience, which opened their eyes to the opportunities that await them. The enriching insights, knowledge and connections they gained during the Legal Immersion Experience will serve them well as they finish their Master of Laws (LL.M.) and embark on their career journeys.
