Want to Live Longer and Happier? Make Decisions that Align With Your Purpose
Finding purpose is the first step to a meaningful life.
As we celebrate IE Happiness Week 2024, it is the perfect opportunity to reflect deeply on the essence of our daily choices and the profound impact of living a purpose-driven life. In an era that constantly challenges our norms and beliefs, understanding and aligning with our core purpose has never been more crucial. Making consistent decisions that support our life’s purpose helps us gain happiness, fulfillment, and even longevity.
Why is purpose so important?
Your life purpose is the overarching vision for your life, based on your passions, values, and aspirations. A strong sense of purpose can serve as a compass guiding you through the complexities of life, influencing your well-being and resilience in the face of difficulties.
The impact of purpose has been well-documented. In a groundbreaking study, Dr. Koichiro Shiba and a team of researchers surveyed more than 13,000 adults over the age of 50. They found that having a strong sense of purpose lowered the risk of death by more than 15%. Another recent paper by A. R. Sutin et al. shows that people who live with purpose deal with stress better and are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors, such as exercise and preventative healthcare.
Meanwhile, Hill, Ollaru, and Allemand discovered that purpose can even ward off loneliness—a significant risk to our well-being. In a subsequent interview, co-author Patrick Hill explained, “Loneliness is known to be one of the biggest psychological predictors for health problems, cognitive decline, and early mortality.” What’s more, people with a higher sense of purpose also reported lower feelings of loneliness and greater social connection.
The pursuit of a purpose-driven life is consistently linked with higher levels of satisfaction and overall well-being. Purposeful living encourages proactive engagement with life, contributing to health and happiness. So what is the secret to living life with purpose? It starts with defining what’s most important to you.
Identifying your purpose
Identifying your purpose involves introspective practices that illuminate your core values and aspirations. One fundamental method is self-reflection, where you examine life's most impactful moments to discern the underlying values defining your habits and worldview. Reflecting on peak experiences, significant achievements, and intense emotions can highlight what truly motivates and fulfills you, such as a commitment to creativity, community, or personal growth.
Exploring your passions and interests offers another pathway to discovering your purpose. After all, your passions often reflect your intrinsic motivations and can guide you toward fulfilling practices, hobbies, and careers. Engage in activities that ignite enthusiasm and observe where you feel most engaged and alive. Your passions are key indicators of where your purpose may lie, so by embracing them, you can lead to a more meaningful and joy-filled existence.
Finally, consider what your greatest aspirations in life are. What legacy do you want to leave? What impact do you want to make in your world? Aligning your daily life with these ambitions ensures that your path is not only fulfilling but also resonant with your deepest intentions. This alignment empowers you to live authentically, helping you make decisions that consistently reflect your highest self and contributing to a life rich with purpose and meaning.
Strategies for making purpose-aligned decisions
With a clear understanding of your purpose, the next step is to ensure that it guides your everyday actions and decisions. This may include setting goals that resonate with your core values, or taking steps—however small—that are in harmony with your personal mission.
Purposeful living is an art that you must practice daily. It involves making conscious choices that reflect your values, leading to a more authentic and satisfying life. Here are some practical steps that you can take to integrate purpose into your day-to-day life:
Consistent reflection: Build a habit of regularly reflecting on your purpose and values, ensuring that your daily choices align with them. This continual reassessment process helps keep your actions in sync with your overarching life goals, providing clarity and direction.
Meaningful activities: Actively seek out and participate in activities that resonate with your values. This could be anything from volunteering to joining clubs aligned with your interests, or engaging in a career that reflects your purpose. These activities not only enrich your life but also reinforce your commitment to your mission.
Goal-setting: Develop clear, actionable plans that transform your core values into measurable and tangible outcomes. Effective goal-setting connects your daily actions with your larger life goals, creating a path that is both fulfilling and aligned with your personal values.
Mindful decisions: Approach important decisions with careful consideration. Think about how each choices reflect your purpose and values. This will help you make decisions with intention, contributing to a life that consistently embodies your core principles.
Adaptability: Stay flexible and open to reassessing your purpose as you encounter new experiences and undergo more personal growth. Embracing adaptability allows you to refine your understanding of your purpose and adjust your path to reflect your evolving self.
Make a path through the unknown
The journey to living purposefully can be challenging. Doubts, societal pressures, and fear of the unknown can interfere with your decisions and commitment. It's important to remain focused on your values, letting them guide your decisions and actions. View each challenge as a chance to learn and gain a better understanding of yourself.
