Specialization Concentrations

Development Studies and Social Entrepreneurship

This concentration covers a wide range of disciplines, providing tomorrow’s leaders with a deep and holistic understanding of all the dimensions of development, from political to economic. Students build informed perspectives on the issues faced by developing countries today. They learn how to identify solutions and propose effective and concrete plans through an engaged, critical and innovative approach.
Rooted in the pillars of IE University and social entrepreneurship, the IE School of International Relations provides students with the necessary skills to take on a number of professional positions as well as set up their own initiatives in the field of development. With this concentration, students will gain expertise and skills that are valuable in a wide range of professions: international development, working in NGOs, governmental (state, regional and urban) aid programs, development banks, advocacy/lobbying, PR and communication, journalism, and research, among others. These professions span a variety of sectors such as public health, humanitarian work, environment, education, immigration and refugee services, volunteering, and cross-cultural relations.

Public Policy Analysis

This concentration gives students a broad understanding of policymaking processes and tools. Legislation, regulations and political initiatives must be designed and implemented using relevant information (from facts and statistics to qualitative assessment). They also require periodical analysis to assess their effectiveness. Students learn this basic framework—the methods, technical and analytical skills, and tools that are crucial in fields such as health, economic development, environment and education. By combining public policy with the management skills and techniques studied in the core program of the Bachelor in International Relations, students gain strong abilities that allow them to develop innovative solutions.
The Public Policy Analysis concentration opens a wide range of professional paths for students: government, public agencies, central banks, international and multilateral organizations, development banks, think-tanks and research institutes. The opportunities you will find along these paths can be applied to multiple sectors.

Geopolitics and Global Security

This concentration is designed for students who want to take part in finding solutions to current geopolitical challenges and complex global conflicts. The program will introduce you to the conceptual framework needed to understand all the important factors that drive political and military conflicts, security challenges and the dynamics of peace and global political stability.
The multidisciplinary approach of this concentration provides students with a thorough understanding of strategy, planning and negotiation techniques required to manage and resolve conflicts as well as to identify and prevent threats. Core components of this program include defense and military strategy; international intelligence, information technology and cyber-security; terrorism, new political forces and unconventional warfare; and international negotiation, coercion and intervention. This concentration gives you ample professional possibilities: government and state agencies, international and multilateral organizations, think-tanks and research institutes, international non-profit organizations, consulting firms, IT industry, and specialized journalism, to name a few.

International Business

Students who pursue this concentration develop a solid understanding of how businesses function at an international level—from how they start, to how they should be managed, how they’re affected by regulations and cultural context, and how they can grow. On top of the basic foundations of economics, business, and management studied previously in the core program of the Bachelor in International Relations, this option further develops the conceptual background and relevant skills and tools necessary to understand the dynamics of international business, multinational government, management (communication, marketing, operations, etc.) and development, and the evolving map of global opportunities for trade, investment, and growth.
This track, specific for students pursuing the Bachelor in International Relations, prepares innovators who are ready to succeed in a variety of internationally oriented careers, working in organizations such as multinational companies, local firms involved in international activities (trade, licensing, financial arrangements, etc.) or consulting firms specialized in the internationalization of businesses. Possible positions within this academic path include marketing, communication, institutional relations, operations, human resources and compliance in international settings.
