The student attendance policy for this academic year (2024-2025) aims to guarantee a high quality and productive learning environment and will be valid regardless of whether a student attends class in- person or online.
Class Attendance
- For the Residential Week we expect students to attend classes on campus, in-person. If a student cannot make it for justified and documented reasons (such as sickness, mobility restrictions, visadelays) they have the possibility to attend the Residential Weeks remotely.
- Professors will be informed of these students attending remotely so that they can take attendance accordingly, supported by an ad hoc system developed by IE University.
- The policy regarding mandatory attendance is as follows: the obligation to attend at least 80% of sessions for master programs and for bachelor programs will apply regardless of whether the student attends live in-person sessions on campus, remotely online, or asynchronous sessions. The consequence of failing to comply with this policy will imply a FAIL grade for the course. For bachelor programs, this will apply to the ordinary and extraordinary calls of the current academic year. For Master programs, students must obtain a Low Pass in the affected subject´s retake, otherwise they will face program expulsion.
- Personal trips, appointments, minor illnesses, or other personal matters will be considered an absence and will not be treated as an exceptional case.
- Attendance to asynchronous sessions will be monitored by the professor and will count in the same way as synchronous sessions. Given that some type of activity is always associated with the asynchronous sessions, the participation in these assignments will serve as proof of attendance.
- Student behavior during sessions must comply with IE University standards regarding education, respect for peers and professors, and a commitment to joint learning. Any infraction to these standards could even be considered counter to academic ethics and result in a sanction.
Particular Instructions For Online Sessions
- Students who connect remotely must keep their cameras on in order to signal their presence in class and are expected to follow the courtesy rules that are also necessary in the digital environment (that will be very useful in their future professional activities). If the camera is not turned on, it will be considered an unattended session; if the courtesy rules are not respected, it could even result in a sanction if it goes against the academic ethics code.
- Students should use the correct equipment (headphones/microphone) and ensure the best conditions possible to participate in class.
- Students should download the latest version of Zoom Pro if their program is taught through this platform.
Participation
- Besides attendance, participation in sessions is encouraged and will be an important assessment component.
- In relation to asynchronous sessions, since they usually entail completing an activity (discussion, test, exercises, etc.), they can also count toward the participation grade or the assignments grade, at the discretion of the professor.
- Attendance to forums: you are considered to have attended a forum if you have posted at least one post per forum: otherwise, it is considered an absence (reading the posts does not suffice).
Recordings
-
- Recordings of the sessions, -so that they can be watched at a more convenient time by students-, shall be available in the following specific instances: severe illness, very challenging time zones for a particular session’s timing or in the case of special needs (previously approved by IE’s in-housecounselors). If some students meet either of these criteria that make their presence in the live in- person sessions a challenge, they should inform the Program Management. Each case will be determined on an individual basis based on justified and documented reasons.
