Architectural projects go beyond aesthetics

Yebin Sreenivasan brings over two decades of professional experience to IE School of Architecture and Design. Trained as a designer back in Dubai, he enrolled with the goal of learning more about business and economics to evolve his career. From his experience, sometimes architectural designers must learn more theory to complement the practice. “Most of us designers understand how to design, but it’s the why and what that are more important,” he explains.

Yebin ultimately chose IE University based on how it applies business and economic strategies to the design industry. Considering that he’s actively working for companies like Majid Al Futtaim and EllisDon back home, the hybrid format and extensive online format suit his needs.

Today, the Master in Business for Architecture & Design is teaching Yebin that architectural projects go beyond aesthetics. He now realizes that, before any designing begins, you must understand everybody’s point of view—a factor that is essential for the project’s success. In this way, the program is showing him how to collaborate with other team members with different disciplines and specialties.

At the same time, the program is constantly informing Yebin and his peers to be more aware of the social, economic and environmental impact of design and architecture. According to Yebin, these factors have played a role in every team design decision.

One of the most challenging aspects for Yebin at IE University has been going beyond the generic design process and working around the client’s vision. With this, the program has provided Yebin with a more comprehensive understanding of how to bring value to customers and how to achieve that value via architecture and spatial design.

In many ways, Yebin considers the Master in Business for Architecture & Design to be fertile testing grounds for those seeking to broaden their entrepreneurial mindset and eventually launch their own venture.

“The program itself is a mini-incubator to test and validate business ideas in the realm of design and building environments.”

Throughout his own career, Yebin has been impressed by firms like Meccano in the Netherlands and how they approach design. Previously collaborating with them, he particularly appreciates how they don’t enforce one single in-house style or brand to every project.

Instead, firms like Meccano work hard to understand and recognize the people, place, culture and climate prior to any construction plan. Reinforced by his education at IE University, Yebin feels as though this sort of awareness is what gives the built environment purpose.
