PhD Program in Complex Systems for Societal and Technological Transitions

IE University Doctoral School is launching the PhD in Complex Systems for Societal and Technological Transitions, a new doctoral program for researchers who want to understand and shape complex, interconnected systems across society, technology, industry and the environment.

As artificial intelligence and other exponential technologies continue to advance, complex systems are becoming central to challenges in health and medical technologies, materials and energy systems, financial systems, intelligent technologies, sustainability and beyond. The program brings together computing and data sciences, mathematical modeling, artificial intelligence, engineering, life sciences and sustainability to support rigorous doctoral research with real-world relevance.

The program is designed for candidates interested in developing research with potential impact across academic, institutional, business and industry contexts. Its launch is part of the broader IE University ecosystem for cross-disciplinary research, innovation and global collaboration, including IEX Labs and collaboration with industry researchers and technology leaders.

The program is led by researchers trained at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions—including MIT, ETH Zürich, Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Yale, Columbia and EPFL.

Why IE University?

Over the last four years, IE University has actively recruited more than 30 new researchers in science and technology from leading international institutions.

Doctoral candidates join this ecosystem from day one. Through the IEX Labs , students participate in real research projects and collaborate with an interdisciplinary community working on challenges in artificial intelligence, sustainability, energy transition and beyond.

IE University is also a member of RISE Europe , a consortium of leading European research institutions, including Aalto University, École Polytechnique, ETH Zürich, Imperial College London, University of Oxford and TU Munich, opening pathways to international collaborations.
