How do I stand out from the crowd? Is it possible to really convey my true abilities and potential to complete strangers?

These are some of the questions a lot of prospective IE Business School students ask themselves, even those with solid backgrounds in the Marketing, Communications & Sales (MARCOM) field.

Thinking outside the box, staying away from the standard resume format, engaging the reader with something cool—any one of these can make your application shine. Any selection process can make us feel vulnerable and insecure, particularly when confronted with tough or uncaring decision-makers.

“We’re not here to make people’s lives more difficult—quite the opposite. Our aim is to guide each candidate through the admissions process individually, making sure it’s as streamlined and accessible as possible,” says Joey, who works as a MARCOM programs specialist within the Admissions Department.

“We follow you step by step, guiding you from the submission of your application to reserving your place. If at any point you have doubts, pick up the phone and get in touch!”

Do advisors have any tips in terms of managing your admissions process?

“We always recommend submitting the entrance exam and the Kira online assessment test early, as they are the most time-consuming items we require. MARCOM programs are extremely popular and classes can fill up quite quickly, so applying early and advancing soon can be key to securing a place,” says Joey.

How can a candidate shine and demonstrate they’re the best fit for the program?

“In the case of MARCOM candidates, the ideal candidate will vary depending on the program. For the Master in Digital Marketing & Analytics or the Master in Market Research & Consumer Behavior, we’re always on the lookout for candidates who demonstrate good quantitative and analytical skills,” explains Jorge, the junior manager for Business Specialized Programs at IE Business School.

Nonetheless, there are abilities that are transversal to any ideal candidate of a MARCOM program.

“We’re searching for highly motivated students who can contribute their unique lived experiences to IE Business School’s diverse learning environment. Being able to communicate with people from other backgrounds, work within a team and have a strategic mindset are essential for anyone wishing to join one of our programs.”

But where can I show these skills in my application?

As someone whose job it is to examine the detail of the submitted material, Joey gives us his take: “Some key parts of the application where the candidate’s drive and passion for the subject can come through are the letters of recommendation and the composition. We look at hundreds of applications throughout the year, but reading an inspiring essay, watching a video where the candidate shows their creativity or being impressed by the endorsement of an objective referee is something that can really help secure your admission.”

And what can an admitted candidate to a MARCOM program expect from their colleagues?

Jorge explains that, “In the 21st century, marketers have unprecedented tools to really understand potential customers. But IE Business School graduates will face a very competitive environment once they return to the labor market.” We therefore need to select candidates who not only grasp market insights, but will also be able to learn to use technology to persuade customers of the unique value proposition of the product or service they’re trying to sell.”

You can expect your peers to be creative, tech savvy and analytical, while also being able to communicate their initiatives clearly.

“Concerned that you’re not the best in some of these areas? The whole point of IE Business School is to bring the next best you forward. Our wonderful faculty, staff and student body will help you achieve new heights and prepare you to face the challenges and opportunities of the future,” concludes Jorge.
