Rita Mantel Gabay is a Master in Architecture student from Spain with a keen focus on resource scarcity and embodiment. She is passionate about integrating human experiences and interactions into architectural design. The architecture program at IE University has allowed her to explore her own interests while building her skills and knowledge under top professionals in the field.

IE University’s innovative Master in Architecture combines a year-long thesis project with advanced design and construction courses. As part of their studies, students spend three weeks with UNStudio in the Netherlands, completing hands-on training and developing their thesis projects.

Rita describes her stay in Amsterdam as nothing short of transformative. “Coming to a different country that we're not used to working in has been really impactful,” she explained. Overwhelmed by the warmth of the local community and charmed by the city’s beauty, Rita was fascinated by how easy it was to get around. Even with the occasional rain, the city is still inviting, making it a great place to explore and learn.

Rita’s final project has been inspired by her time in Amsterdam. It examines how people connect with each other, with themselves and with the resources around them. She has decided to use water, one of the biggest influences on Dutch culture, as a central element. The project aims to explore and challenge these connections by building a public space where these experiences can be explored.

“It's been a wonderful three weeks, I couldn't have expected it to be better, to be honest.”

Of course, Rita has faced some challenges during her academic journey. But, she says, “The biggest challenge was narrowing down all the interesting possibilities” she could have chosen from for her thesis. Her determination to find the right direction and pursue her passions shows her commitment to excellence and innovation. Rita is curious to see what her final project will look like as she tries to balance expanding her research with reaching a definitive conclusion.

In terms of her overall experience at IE University, Rita has enjoyed the hands-on nature of the learning here. She and her classmates have been on numerous educational trips outside of school. Rita found learning about construction systems with Matan Mayer equally stimulating because they could practice what they learned in a practical way, like in a workshop. She believes that focusing on things like a building’s carbon footprint will be important for their field in the future.

Rita’s journey highlights the significant impact of hands-on learning. Her strong commitment to innovation and sustainability mirrors the values of IE University and the Master in Architecture program. Rita also embodies the curiosity and growth mindset encouraged by IE University as she focuses on her final project and embraces new surroundings.
