"I have learned different methods to face and solve common problems, which are similar regardless of location or culture."

Teamwork with a big-picture perspective

Rafael Zamora is an architect from Spain with ambitious plans for his PMP (Project Management Professional) certification.

In the grand scheme, Rafael believes that architects and designers must pay special attention to new and emerging technology. At the forefront of this are virtual reality, augmented reality, AI and machine learning. According to Rafael, we must approach every project from a standpoint of circular economy and sustainability.

Before enrolling at IE University, Rafael began his studies at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. During this time, he also participated in an exchange program in Chicago at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he concentrated on efficient building practices.

Rafael is currently a student of the Master in Business for Architecture and Design at IE University, with plans to graduate in July 2022. All the while, he’s working in Delft, Netherlands as a project coordinator for Cepezed Architects. On top of studying, some of his current responsibilities include coordinating with consultants to meet cost and time constraints and navigating building regulations.

The program has directly enhanced Rafael’s working career. He says that it has taught him to see the big picture, specifically the business side of things, rather than solely traditional architectural design concepts. Embracing the business side of the architecture profession means interacting more with clients, which is one of the most critical aspects of this field.

“We need to focus on client needs in order to bring solutions that solve real problems.”

Describing the program as “mind-opening,” Rafael has enjoyed his experience inside the classroom, especially the team dynamics. He says that he was particularly impressed at how hardworking his classmates have been. With so many different cultures in the program merging together to get projects done, Rafael has learned the universal language of teamwork. He has gained special takeaways from each classmate and learned different methods for facing—and solving—common problems which are similar regardless of location or culture.

Within the realm of architecture and design, Rafael considers digitalization and prefabrication to be two of today’s most pivotal topics. In his opinion, onsite construction can be inefficient, produce more waste and be less accurate in terms of precision. Personally, he prefers going the prefabricated route, pointing out that this method allows for more sustainable, less costly and more precise architectural projects.

Previously, Rafael has also worked in Rotterdam as a project manager at Kaan Architects & Barcode. Other experiences include project manager for FGP Atelier in Mexico City and Helmut Jahn in Chicago.
