Jazz: ChaosAndHarmony
Jazz: Chaos and Harmony is a visual and conceptual exploration of jazz as both music and movement, not just as a genre, but as a cultural force. This project traces the evolution of jazz from its origins in New Orleans to its most contemporary forms, translating the sound of rebellion, emotion, and improvisation into a visual narrative. The core concept revolves around the tension between chaos and harmony, the way jazz breaks structure while simultaneously creating its own internal order. I studied how jazz evolved through major historical, cultural, and social moments, from the Great Migration to the Civil Rights Movement, the Harlem Renaissance to the digital age. Each stage of jazz like Swing, Bebop, Free Jazz, Fusion, and beyond, reflects a shift not only in sound, but in identity, expression, and resistance. Throughout the portfolio, I worked to reflect this evolution through materials, silhouettes, textures, and rhythm. I began in black and white, referencing jazz’s early roots in oppression and coded communication, and gradually transitioned to more vivid colors and experimental forms as the genre expanded. Moulage and draping allowed me to explore rhythm in 3D, while silhouettes referenced instruments, movement, and the fluidity of sound. This project is ultimately about the balance between unpredictability and intention, how jazz creates harmony from dissonance, order from freedom. It is a study of how something raw, chaotic, and improvised can still feel complete. It’s not about fixing the chaos, it’s about understanding it, working with it, and finding beauty in its rhythm.
