About me

With a career that bridges professional practice, teaching, and research, José Mª Mateo Torres represents a new generation of architects committed to sustainability, material innovation, and the social impact of design. Educated at the School of Architecture of Cartagena and graduating with honors, he broadened his vision through the Master in Business for Architecture and Design at IE University, integrating business, management, and strategic tools into his architectural approach. His work explores the connections between technology, ecology, and community, driving projects that transform the built environment through an experimental and collaborative lens.

As co-founder of meii studio, he has led architecture, urbanism, and rehabilitation projects across Spain and Europe — recognized with international awards such as Europan 16 Living Cities and Concéntrico, as well as the recent Nuevo Teatro Circo de Cartagena. At the same time, as a member of the CTAC (UPCT) research group, he coordinates European initiatives such as LIFE Bauhausing Europe, focused on urban renaturalization and new material ecosystems. His work integrates critical thinking, constructive experimentation, and a strategic vision of architecture as a driving force for social and environmental change.

Q&A with José M. Mateo Torres

Define your experience in the MBARCH at IE in one word.

Impact

What was your networking experience like during the program?

It was great — not only in terms of professional opportunities, but also because I met people who have become true friends. The diversity of backgrounds and experiences at IE created an environment where collaboration and genuine connection came naturally.

Which skills from the master have been most valuable in developing your current projects?

The ability to view architecture from a broader, more interdisciplinary perspective has been essential. Above all, I’ve learned how crucial team management is — not just as a tool, but as one of the core elements of any successful project.

What kinds of projects are you currently working on, and how do they blend business strategy with architecture?

At meii studio, every project blends business strategy with architecture, because creating architecture is, in itself, a strategic act. Each design represents not only the identity of our studio but also that of our clients. Every project is a deliberate, intentional, and almost political action — a way of shaping both space and meaning.

How do you think the MBARCH program has influenced your approach to architecture and design today?

It helped me understand architecture as part of a larger ecosystem — one that connects people, management, and strategy. The program expanded my vision, allowing me to go further, collaborate better, and design with a stronger sense of purpose and impact.

What emerging opportunities do you see at the intersection of business with architecture and design today?

I believe this intersection offers the chance to create a broader and amplified impact — to design projects that not only solve spatial challenges but also generate economic, environmental, and social value.

If someone were considering studying this master's at IE, what would you tell them?

I’d tell them to do it without hesitation. Go in with an open mind and let yourself be surprised by how much you’ll learn and grow — both professionally and personally.
