Masterclass with Evelio Acevedo, Managing Director of Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza

In a special session of Professor Sofia Urbina’s class Art as a Form of Investment, students had the unique opportunity to hear from Evelio Acevedo, Managing Director of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Known for housing one of the most comprehensive art collections in the world, the Thyssen Museum stands out for its commitment to both preservation and innovation.

Mr. Acevedo offered an in-depth look at the museum’s internal operations, discussing topics such as the management of its diverse collection, strategies behind curating and organizing exhibitions, and the intricacies of lending artworks to institutions around the globe. He also shared the museum’s response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic—most notably, the development of a virtual tour that now draws more visitors than the physical museum itself.

Highlighting the importance of accessibility, ongoing maintenance, and the integration of new technologies, Evelio Acevedo emphasized that museums must remain dynamic spaces for learning and enjoyment. As he noted, "The most important factor is making the museum attractive and accessible—a space for learning and enjoyment."
