IE School of Humanities and Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza launch digital exhibition exploring the ethics of style

Before Fast Fashion: Art, Sustainability and Style’ launches during Sustainability Week, with a panel featuring Evelio Acevedo.

IE School of Humanities launched Before Fast Fashion: Art, Sustainability, and Style, the first digital exhibition in an ongoing collaboration with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. This initiative leverages digital technology to bring the museum experience to IE University, connecting art, innovation, and academic life at the academic institution.

Curated by Shana Cooperstein, Assistant Professor of Art History at IE School of Humanities, this inaugural exhibition explores the intersections between art, fashion, and sustainability. Through high-quality digital reproductions from the Thyssen-Bornemisza’s permanent collection, the exhibition offers a visual journey through centuries of style - from aristocratic portraits to depictions of athletic wear - inviting viewers to reflect on the ethical and material dimensions of clothing production and consumption.

The exhibition launches during IE Sustainability Week with a panel conversation featuring Evelio Acevedo, Managing Director of  Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza; Shana Cooperstein; and Inés Quezada, Academic Director of the Bachelor in Fashion Design. The discussion will be moderated by María José Jiménez Orozco, a student of the Bachelor in Environmental Sciences for Sustainability.

Displayed on the large-scale digital screen located in IE Tower’s lobby (level -4), this exhibition marks the beginning of a four-part program running from 2025 to 2027, each edition aligning artworks from the museum’s collection with key events in the academic calendar.

Upcoming exhibitions in the series include:

  • Spring 2026: Pioneering Abstraction: Natalia Goncharova’s Modern Art.
  • Fall 2026: Toulouse-Lautrec and the World of Equestrianism.
  • Spring 2027: Light’s Out: Art, Climate Change, and Environmental Stewardship.

Through this collaboration, IE School of Humanities and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza reaffirm their shared commitment to bridging art, education, and digital innovation, fostering new ways to engage with art history in the 21st century.
