- Visiting Scholars Program: Alexia Yates
The IE School of Humanities was delighted to welcome Dr. Alexia Yates , Professor of European History (19th & early 20th centuries) at the European University Institute , to IE University as part of our Visiting Fellows Program.
During her visit, Dr. Yates served as a guest speaker in one of our courses, participated in a lively scholars’ lunch with faculty, and delivered a thought-provoking research seminar titled "Rise of the Rentier: Toward an Intimate History of Global Capitalism."
In her seminar, Dr. Yates presented her ongoing book project, which investigates how finance became deeply woven into the everyday lives and imagined futures of ordinary people in nineteenth-century France—then one of the world’s most globalized and commercialized modern economies. Her work engages with profound questions about the political and cultural power of finance, examining it not only as an economic practice but also as a regime of knowledge and a mode of shaping state-society relations.
We extend our sincere thanks to Professor Patrick Luiz Sullivan De Oliveira for making this enriching visit possible.
