INDUSTRY TRENDS
Tackling climate change through trade agreements
The potential of international trade agreements in holding countries more accountable and tackling the negative effects of climate change is increasingly evident. Currently, the EU makes participation in the Paris climate agreement a requirement when making new agreements. However, there is still progress to be made as many of these commitments are not legally binding to the same extent as other factors and their effectiveness is in dispute.
Data privacy in Europe
In the wake of COVID-19, attitudes to governments sharing health records with private corporations like Google have shifted. While 55% of EU citizens were against sharing of health data before the pandemic, concern is decreasing—especially if it helps the development of new treatments. In Spain, 67% of the population is now willing to share their data, signalling that data privacy will continue to be important in the future of our democratic system.
The political effect of tech progress
The rapid pace of technological advancement is likely to disenfranchise workers from more traditional industries. We can already see this in the global rise of nationalism, such as the Trump administration and Brexit, and Europeans' support (75% in total) for intervention in tech advancement. The answer to this change can be found in education, as a more highly skilled workforce will better adapt to the change, moderating the political reaction.
The changing nature of legal education
As globalization redefines the international landscape, the way legal professionals learn must also change. Legal education is traditionally inward-looking, constrained by regional jurisdictions and practices. The new broad reality calls for a rethink of these approaches, with more focus on technological innovation and problem-solving. This trend toward a more holistic, “practice-ready” approach is helping to fill the demand in an evolving sector.
