The Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed in the 5th century CE, followiRolfng several centuries of decline. While popularly told as a story of “barbarian” invasions, the real causes for collapse were numerous, complex, and interlinked and they stretched out over more than a hundred years. These include pandemics, overexploitation of resources, irresponsible monetary policy, inadequate ideology, over-reliance on globalized trade, and, possibly, even global warming. In this talk, I will review how such factors combined to destroy the political cohesiveness of the Western Roman Empire, and also consider the argument advanced recently by the noted Roman historian Walter Scheidel, that the collapse of Roman authority was ultimately beneficial for the rise of later European culture.
