Q&A WITH MANUEL

Why do you think it’s important for you to engage with the IEU alumni community?

There is a tightknit community (for both the master’s and undergrad alumni), which allows for easy networking. Not only is the IEU alumni community extremely fun and active, but it also helps you boost your professional career through insightful conversations and networking opportunities. I have made great friends who give new perspectives from a professional standpoint (given the diversity of companies in the group) and support you at a personal level.

How did you land your current position at Google?

I was an intern at Google for six months in 2018, while completing my undergraduate degree. The Careers department at IEU helped me tailor my CV for the role. After I completed by six-month internship, I was offered a full-time position.

How did your experience at IEU prepare you for your professional career?

With IE’s dynamic education, I was able to learn about the different facets of business (marketing, finance, accounting, HR, etc.), go on exchange to the University of Michigan in the States (where I was able to pursue my passion in computer science by taking computer engineering classes), carry-out a six-month internship at Google as part of the internship semester program (which led to a full-time contract), take electives in data science on my last semester, and build a professional network throughout the four years at IEU.

What advice would you give to IEU students and alumni who are looking to pursue a career in the tech industry?

Network as much as you can, knowing people in the industry helps you better understand what recruiters and companies are looking for. Most people are very open to helping others and might even give you a referral or recommendation!

What skills do you need to succeed in business development and strategy?

Project management skills, teamwork, and perseverance.

What is the competitive advantage that studying at IEU provides or has provided you?

IEU provides a very unique international education – you end up building a circle of people from very different nationalities and backgrounds. Additionally, IEU helps you build skills that are relevant in business related roles – including presentation skills, group projects, and a variety of knowledge across different fields.

If someone was considering going to IEU, what would you tell them?

Attending IEU is a fantastic opportunity, the university provides a diverse education that allows you to pursue your interests and passions. During those four (or five!) years, you will be able to develop soft-skills and a wide range of knowledge that will prepare you to kickstart a professional career in the field of your choosing. Additionally, you will meet amazing people along the way who will remain life-friends and will enrich your university experience.
