Master in International Relations
A unique program
The MIR produces influential leaders who can transform and make a meaningful difference in the public, private and non-profit sectors.
Its core courses are divided into four areas: global affairs foundations, international business and economics, comparative regional studies, and social entrepreneurship and development. MIR students also study a foreign language and complete a final project, either a Master’s thesis or a capstone consulting project. The program is complemented by a week-long fieldwork visit to Brussels and an optional international exchange semester at one of our prestigious partner universities.
Theories of International Relations
In this course, students are introduced to the theoretical paradigms which have historically and do currently guide research in international relations and apply them to salient contemporary topics.
History of International Relations
This course will consider some of the ways societies have interacted and been organized in the last 500 years, as well as historic theories of nationhood, causes of conflict and preconditions for peace.
Introduction to International Law
This course examines the development of international law and its institutions. The work of the European Court of Human Rights and other regional systems of protection and their interactions will be studied.
Global Governance and International Organizations
The course examines international institutions—such as the UN, WTO, IMF and NATO—and their role in addressing global challenges of economic governance, development and transnational security.
Peace, Conflict and Mediation
This course will review basic theoretical concepts and frameworks for conflict management and resolution and examine the role of third-party intervention and governmental and intergovernmental structures.
International Finance and Monetary Theory
This course examines the institutions and structures that shape the political economy of the international monetary and financial systems from historical, theoretical and practical perspectives.
Micro- and Maco- Economics
The course covers the most important economic theories and macroeconomic concepts for business with a focus on economic analysis, consumer decision-making and the implications of governmental microeconomic policies.
This course analyzes elements of human behavior that affect the workplace, such as career management, self-management and leadership, in order to assess their potential impact on the workplace.
This course examines the role of statistics in managerial decision-making with a focus on both the theory of fundamental statistical techniques and the use of Excel for statistical analysis.
International Political Economy
This course offers an advanced introduction to international political economy by analyzing global economic trends, globalization international systems, development, climate change and more.
International Relations and Political Economy of the Middle East
This seminar centers on international relations in the contemporary Middle East and North Africa. Its primary focus is to expose students to academic and policy debates about the region's past, present and future after the 2011 Arab uprisings.
Politics and Economics of China and Southeast Asia
This course uses an interdisciplinary approach to analyze social, political and economic change in contemporary China and Southeast Asia; and the repercussions of these transformations on its foreign policy and international behavior.
Politics, Development and Economics of Latin America
This course examines and compares transitions to democracy in South American countries. This regional focus will be supplemented by an analysis of the challenges democratic governments face.
Comparative Development and Political Economy of Africa
This course will provide students a general introduction to the political, economic and social dynamics of Sub-Saharan Africa. It will include case studies focused on both its diversity and shared challenges.
The European Union and the European Economy
This course is a comprehensive introduction to the European Union and its dynamics, goals and policies. Students will develop the skills required to work with European institutions.
This course is intended primarily for graduate students in political science as an introduction to the comparative study of democratic processes. Students will learn to analyze these major issues across all countries.
Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship
This seminar introduces students to topics in social entrepreneurship as they analyze the opportunities, challenges and tensions facing social entrepreneurs who work with the world's poorest.
Game Theory and International Strategy
This course will provide students an introduction to the use of rational choice and game theoretic modeling. The basic math skills to be used for the course can be acquired as the course progresses.
This course is a general introduction to project management with a focus on the tools and techniques students need to develop skills in structured thinking, analysis, problem-solving and soft skills.
Corporate Social Responsibility
This course examines the nexus between business, society, government and entrepreneurship with an emphasis on the political, regulatory, social and natural environments in which businesses and societies operate.
Climate Politics and Environmental Sustainability
This course examines some of today's most salient environmental issues with a focus on the scientific, political, economic, cultural, social and biophysical complexities that environmental issues suppose for policymaking.
Economic Development Theory
The course will analyze major theories of economic development and provide students with the tools they need to evaluate the challenges and opportunities faced by various countries.
Mandatory for non Spanish speakers.
Written under the supervision of a faculty member, the Thesis allows students to develop expertise and contribute to a specific field of knowledge.
Capstone Consulting Project
Under the supervision of a mentor, teams of two or three members have to solve a real challenge for a company, an organization or a social entreprise.
