- Visit To The Royal Palaces Of Riofrío And La Granja With Ie History & Archaeology Club
As part of an immersive cultural experience, members of the IE History & Archaeology Club explored two of Spain’s most iconic royal residences near Segovia: the Palacio Real y Bosque de Riofrío and the Palacio Real de La Granja de San Ildefonso. Led by Professor Daniel Valtueña, the visit allowed students to study 18th-century royal architecture and its cultural meaning within its original setting.
The Palacio de Riofrío, originally built as a hunting retreat for Queen Elisabeth Farnese, offered insight into aristocratic life through its preserved interiors, royal portraits, and period furnishings. The palace also highlighted the role of hunting as both a pastime and a symbol of power within the Spanish monarchy.
At La Granja de San Ildefonso, students admired the richly decorated palace rooms, explored the expansive gardens, and observed the monumental fountains in action. The site provided a compelling case study of how French Baroque influences shaped Spanish royal representation and expressed political authority through architecture and landscape design.
This on-site learning experience enriched students’ understanding of the relationship between art, politics, and architecture in historical interpretation. IE University extends its gratitude to Patrimonio Nacional for their support and for their dedication to preserving Spain’s cultural legacy, making this educational visit possible.
