IE University and Sciences Po launch a Dual Master Degree in Technology and Global Affairs

IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs (IE SPEGA) and Sciences Po’s Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) are pleased to announce the launch of the Master in Technology and Global Affairs. This program is designed to educate a new generation of leaders capable of addressing one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century: the growing influence of technology on international affairs.

Starting in Fall 2024, this dual-degree program combines disciplines such as political science, international relations, economics, law and sociology with emerging areas like artificial intelligence, digitalization, fintech, cloud computing and big data analysis. The Master in Technology and Global Affairs provides a comprehensive exploration of the growing importance of technology in every aspect of international affairs.

“Technology has become a full domain of global politics. It is now almost impossible to understand global politics or economics without having a clear grasp of AI, quantum computing, advanced robotics, advanced weapons technology, and others.”
Manuel Muñiz, Dean of IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs and Provost of IE University

As he said, “This new Master’s program will enable students to navigate the world of technological disruption and its impact on our security, our economies and our political systems. It will train the next generation of leaders working in the private and public sectors on the frontier of innovation”.

“There is an urgent need to offer a groundbreaking degree to equip students with the knowledge and skills to create and enforce effective forms of governance that enable technology opportunities to be realised, whilst mitigating its worrying risks.”
Arancha González, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po

Both institutions have worked together to design this program which, over two years, weaves three key dimensions into a coherent academic offering: the impact of technology on geopolitical and security developments; the economic and business transformations driven by technology; and the impact on citizenship and fundamental rights. Issues related to the governance and regulation of tech will be treated as a fourth, cross-cutting dimension.

With the first year spent at Sciences Po’s School of International Affairs in Paris, and the second at IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs in Madrid, students will be placed in global hubs of both technology and international affairs. Taking a practical approach, the program will instil students with a comprehensive understanding of the geopolitical and societal impact of technology, an appreciation of how to use tech innovatively in international policy-making, and know-how on harnessing tech for the betterment of society as a whole.

The Master in Technology and Global Affairs leverages the strengths of both institutions, Sciences Po's excellence in social sciences and PSIA's leadership in International Affairs, combined with IE University's visionary and entrepreneurial spirit, and IE SPEGA's commitment to train future global leaders able to address tomorrow's challenges. With a shared dedication to promoting diversity, the program intends to welcome students from across the world to create an immersive international experience in the heart of Europe.

It will also benefit from input from the IE Center for the Governance of Change, a renowned research institution in the political, economic and social space. Their intellectual leadership, extensive network and worldwide partnerships across public, private and educational sectors, make their contribution indispensable.

At the end of the two years, graduates will receive two diplomas: one nationally accredited master degree from each institution.
