Training the next generation of diplomats: IE University develops an academy to launch the students’ diplomatic careers upon graduation

IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs at IE University prepares students to succeed in diplomacy and build international diplomatic careers.

IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs recently carried out The Diplomatic Academy, a program designed to prepare students for professional careers in diplomacy through a range of seminars, training sessions and field visits. The program took place from January to April 2026 and brought together 20 Bachelor’s students and 5 Master’s students from 13 nationalities.

The program includes three immersive weekends at IE University campuses in Segovia and Madrid, focused on practical skill-building and networking with experienced diplomats. Students attended sessions on topics such as Women in Diplomacy, wellbeing techniques, and cooperation diplomacy, among others. They also worked on hands-on case studies, including simulations on the war in Ukraine, crisis response scenarios, and the preparation of a Prime Minister’s official visit. In addition, participants took part in field visits to key institutions, gaining first-hand insight into the day-to-day practice of diplomacy.

"The Diplomatic Academy is a clear example of how the School applies innovation and practical learning in its teaching methodology", explained Borja Santos, Associate Dean of the School. "Participating students have the opportunity to learn first-hand from former ambassadors and experienced diplomats about how diplomacy is evolving", he added.

Santiago Cabanas, Coordinator of The Diplomatic Academy and former Spanish Ambassador to the United States, the Czech Republic, and Jordan, emphasized to students that "serving the state is a noble calling. I am convinced that, if we all make an effort with passion, we can contribute to building a better world."

At the end of the program, students were awarded an official certification from IE University, formally recognising the knowledge and skills they had acquired. The certification ceremony was led by Manuel Muñiz, Rector of IE University.

"As we live in an increasingly fragmented world, we need more people who can build bridges, navigate complexity, demonstrate a strong sense of public service, and bring vision, strategy, and a deep understanding of the global context", concluded Muñiz.
