Each lab focuses on advancing cutting-edge discoveries through Industry Research Labs while developing your skills with programs like Tech Venture Bootcamp (TVB) and the MXT Exponential Mindset along with industry-focused Gateway Specializations. Every year, early research results are showcased at Collider Events, cross-industry gatherings that bring experts together to discover and explore new insights.

    Research & Flagship Initiatives

    Launched in 2023 through Ripple’s University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI), the IE–Ripple Virtual Assets Regulation Lab connects academic research with evolving global digital asset frameworks.

    Research initiatives include governance and value creation in blockchain ecosystems, the Internet of Assets (IoA) linking digital and physical systems, and global cryptocurrency regulation analysis. The Lab also explores AI-driven trading systems and quantum finance applications, examining how emerging technologies reshape capital markets.

    Industry & IEX Ecosystem Integration

    Collider events in Madrid (2023) and Dubai (2024, Future Blockchain Summit) convened global regulators, academics, and industry leaders to shape research priorities and policy dialogue.

    Insights from these engagements led to the launch of the Gateway Specialization in Fintech, Blockchain (XRPL), and Policy in January 2025, integrating DeFi, regulatory frameworks, and international immersion in Paris.

    Project Spotlight

    IE–Ripple Virtual Assets Regulation Lab

    This initiative examines how decentralized financial systems create, distribute, and govern value. Through applied case studies such as EthicHub and Xaults, the Lab analyzes how blockchain-based platforms enable new lending structures, expand financial access, and redefine trust mechanisms.

    By combining governance analysis with technical innovation, the Lab contributes evidence-based insight into how digital asset ecosystems can scale responsibly across jurisdictions.

    Research & Flagship Initiatives 

    A core research initiative led by Principal Investigator Nacho Molina focuses on Biophysics-Informed Neural Networks (BioPINNs) for Digital Twins in Clinical Trials.

    The project integrates physiological modeling with AI to build patient-specific digital twins that simulate treatment responses and improve trial stratification. It aims to generate interpretable, uncertainty-aware predictions suitable for clinical and regulatory contexts.

    Outputs include a proof-of-concept digital twin platform, joint scientific publications, open-source software, and the training of a dedicated postdoctoral researcher.

  • Industry & IEX Ecosystem Integration 

    In 2025, IE and GSK launched the GSK–IE Biopharma & AI Gateway Specialization: Next Frontiers in Health, a five-month program integrating coursework, research, and collaboration with GSK experts.

    Participants explore AI, blockchain, IoT, digital twins, and advanced analytics across the full pharmaceutical lifecycle—from discovery and regulatory approval to commercialization and post-marketing surveillance. Capstone projects address real-world health challenges including tuberculosis and malaria innovation.

    BioPINNs for Digital Twins in Clinical Trials

    This initiative develops digital representations of patients grounded in biophysical models and enhanced through neural networks. By integrating mechanistic physiological knowledge with machine learning, the project bridges scientific interpretability and predictive performance.

    The digital twin framework enables counterfactual simulation—testing how a patient might respond to alternative treatments without real-world exposure. This has the potential to improve patient safety, accelerate trial timelines, and enhance regulatory confidence in AI-supported medical decisions.

    The VIG–IE Insurance & Tech Lab examines how climate change reshapes life and health insurance systems.

    Its flagship research project, Climate Change Effects on Life & Health Insurance, analyzes rising mortality linked to extreme heat and environmental stressors.

    With over 60,000 excess deaths recorded in Europe during the summer of 2022 and projections of 10–30 additional heatwave days annually in Central and Eastern Europe by 2040, the Lab develops geographically resolved climate-risk models.

    Robopreneur – Robots as Independent Economic Agents

    Led by Assistant Professor Eduardo Castelló Ferrer, this initiative explores robots capable of operating as autonomous economic actors.

    A robotic arm prototype demonstrated the ability to create and sell artwork, transact using blockchain, repay loans, and manage financial resources independently. The project investigates how AI and blockchain integration may redefine ownership, accountability, and governance in autonomous machine systems.
