Research & Flagship Initiatives
A core research initiative led by Principal Investigator Nacho Molina focuses on Biophysics-Informed Neural Networks (BioPINNs) for Digital Twins in Clinical Trials.
The project integrates physiological modeling with AI to build patient-specific digital twins that simulate treatment responses and improve trial stratification. It aims to generate interpretable, uncertainty-aware predictions suitable for clinical and regulatory contexts.
Outputs include a proof-of-concept digital twin platform, joint scientific publications, open-source software, and the training of a dedicated postdoctoral researcher.
Industry & IEX Ecosystem Integration
In 2025, IE and GSK launched the GSK–IE Biopharma & AI Gateway Specialization: Next Frontiers in Health, a five-month program integrating coursework, research, and collaboration with GSK experts.
Participants explore AI, blockchain, IoT, digital twins, and advanced analytics across the full pharmaceutical lifecycle—from discovery and regulatory approval to commercialization and post-marketing surveillance. Capstone projects address real-world health challenges including tuberculosis and malaria innovation.
Project Spotlight
BioPINNs for Digital Twins in Clinical Trials
This initiative develops digital representations of patients grounded in biophysical models and enhanced through neural networks. By integrating mechanistic physiological knowledge with machine learning, the project bridges scientific interpretability and predictive performance.
The digital twin framework enables counterfactual simulation—testing how a patient might respond to alternative treatments without real-world exposure. This has the potential to improve patient safety, accelerate trial timelines, and enhance regulatory confidence in AI-supported medical decisions.

The VIG–IE Insurance & Tech Lab examines how climate change reshapes life and health insurance systems.
Its flagship research project, Climate Change Effects on Life & Health Insurance, analyzes rising mortality linked to extreme heat and environmental stressors.
With over 60,000 excess deaths recorded in Europe during the summer of 2022 and projections of 10–30 additional heatwave days annually in Central and Eastern Europe by 2040, the Lab develops geographically resolved climate-risk models.
Industry & IEX Ecosystem Integration
In collaboration with Vienna Insurance Group (VIG), the Lab operates through structured research engagement between IE’s DataLab and VIG’s strategic teams.
The research directly supports regulatory requirements such as the EU’s Solvency II ORSA climate scenario framework and contributes to long-term adaptation planning within the insurance sector.
Project Spotlight
Climate Change Effects on Life & Health Insurance
This project integrates climate projections, actuarial modeling, and mortality data to quantify how rising temperatures affect long-term insurance liabilities.
By producing geographically resolved risk models, the initiative enables insurers to assess localized exposure and adjust pricing, reserves, and capital strategies accordingly. The work strengthens regulatory readiness while contributing to broader climate adaptation and financial system resilience.
