Internships

GENERAL INFORMATION

Internships favor the acquisition of skills that will prepare students for professional activities, facilitate employability and promote entrepreneurial capacity.

Both curricular and extracurricular internships are an enriching experience that not only looks great on your resume, but also allows you to make connections in the professional world and prepares you for the work field. Take advantage of these wonderful opportunities that are available to you at IE!

In order for an internship to be approved, it needs to be at least one month long and we must apply via the online platform at least two weeks before the start date. We will not validate internships that took place in the past, nor accept initial applications once you have already started the internship.

Depending on your study plan, you can decide to do a curricular (for credits) or extracurricular (no credits) internship.

The internship should broadly align with your academic studies at IE and provide a professional environment to apply the concepts learned in your classes. Should you need help finding an internship please contact the careers department. They send out a newsletter every month with opportunities which you can find by visiting the IE Career Portal.

EXTRACURRICULAR INTERNSHIPS – ALL YEARS

Extracurricular internships are available to students in all years of their studies. They are usually short term (at least one month) and are not credit bearing.

Students who do extracurricular internships early in their academic journey get a first taste of how businesses work. At the end of their extracurricular internships, students may ask for the internship to be recognized and appear on the European Supplement of their official diploma upon graduation.

You can apply for part-time extracurricular internships during the academic year starting from the second semester of your first year. During the summer period, extracurricular internships may be carried out on a full-time basis.

For more information, please see our Internships Guide and FAQs.

Please note that 1st and 2nd year students who want to apply to an extracurricular internship while studying their program will be required to have more than a 7.5 GPA and to sign this Letter of Commitment upon approval of the internship and send it to llb.ppleinternships@ie.edu. These requirements are not applicable for summer internships.

CURRICULAR INTERNSHIPS- 3RD, 4TH AND 5TH ONLY

Curricular internships allow you to receive credits depending on your study plan. Students may carry out curricular internships starting in their third year of studies. Credit allocation for curricular internships will be calculated based on the duration of the internship and hours completed, and they can last up to 6 months.

Please be reminded that students are permitted to complete up to 6 ECTS of elective credits prior to the start of their elective semester. This allowance of elective credits includes moots, curricular internships, and Spanish Track courses and can be extended up to 12 ECTS in those cases for single degree students.

Make sure this internship is compatible with your university schedule and exams, as group changes are not possible and absences to classes or other IE commitments are not excused without any exception. If you have any doubts regarding your eligibility to do a curricular internship or the number of credits you can obtain, please contact us.

**IMPORTANT** Allocated credits for internships carry the same cost as regular elective credits.

How can I calculate the number of credits I will receive for my internship?

  1. First you need to know the number of hours you will be working per day (e.g. full time – 40 hours = 8 hours per day)
  2. You can use a working days online calculator (e.g Días Laborables) where you can input your planned start and finish date to get the total number of working days
  3. Finally multiply the number of working days by the number of hours worked per day to get the total hours you will work in your internship.
