Electives, Moots & Competitions
Electives
An integral part of all of our programs is the elective course component, which allows students to tailor their academic experience based on their interests or possible specializations.
Depending on the degree program, students are required to fulfill up to 60 ECTS of electives, giving our students the freedom to explore different areas or to focus on a specific field by selecting courses offered by their own degree program. Elective courses give students a well-rounded academic experience, as well as expand their awareness, critical-thinking and cultural knowledge.
The list of electives offered is updated every year to adjust them to the current global and professional needs and interests.
Students in their 3rd, 4th or 5th year can sign up for elective courses during the enrollment period (based on students’ study plans).
Please be reminded that students are permitted to complete up to 6 ECTS of elective credits prior to the start of their elective semester. This allowance of elective credits includes moots, curricular internships, and Spanish Track courses and can be extended up to 12 ECTS in those cases for single degree students.
Visit the IE electives website to find a comprehensive overview of the diverse range of elective courses available for the 2025-2026 academic year and to make informed decisions when the enrollment platform opens:

MOOTS & COMPETITIONS
LAW CHALLENGES
The Law Challenges are competitions organized by IE University for its law students, usually for 1st, 2nd and 3rd years. These competitions take place during the semester where they study a specific subject.
On the other hand, Moot Competitions are usually available for students in their 3rd, 4th and 5th years. You will find more information above on the Electives description.
Please make sure to go to Your Degree section to see all the details of the competitions you’re able to apply to each year.
MOOT COURT COMPETITIONS
By participating in one of the international Moot Court Competitions, you will gain a real-world perspective of the practice of law. The moots consist of an innovative learning methodology that exponentially enriches students’ legal education. Participants are required to solve a hypothetical and complex case and furthermore, participate in courtroom-style trials and/or arbitration proceedings, serving as real attorneys, to persuade a judge, jury or an arbitrator.
The participating teams are evaluated on their written skills, as well as their advocacy skills and are required to have a profound understanding of the facts of the case, the legal arguments and their opponents’ position in order to succeed.
