About me

My name is Aden Couture. I was born in Oregon, USA, but I grew up in Oxford, in the UK, which shaped my international outlook from an early age. At IE University, I’m studying international relations, and I’m also the vice president of the IE Debate Club. Outside of academics, I enjoy skiing and traveling. The Azores and Costa Rica are my favorite destinations for their balance of environmental preservation and cultural richness.

Q&A with Aden

Why did you choose the Bachelor in International Relations at IE University?

I chose to pursue a Bachelor in International Relations because of my ambition to work in diplomacy and my fascination with how states interact within the international system. IE University’s strong ties to the United Nations and its emphasis on discussion, debate and collaboration closely align with the skills required in diplomatic practice.

What aspects of the program have you enjoyed the most so far?

I really appreciate the program’s interactive learning environment, where debate, case studies and group work are central to the classroom experience. This approach encourages critical thinking and exposes students to diverse perspectives, closely mirroring real-world diplomatic and policy settings.

Which courses have you found the most interesting?

International Relations Theory and Economics have been particularly impactful. I’ve enjoyed learning about how sustainability intersects with global governance. An assignment that I learned a lot from was my research paper on Arctic sovereignty, where I examined geopolitical competition, environmental concerns and international law. It strengthened my analytical and research skills while deepening my interest in contemporary global challenges.

What skills are essential for someone pursuing a career in international relations?

Strong analytical thinking, clear communication and cultural awareness are definitely essential if you want to work in international relations. Equally important are adaptability and collaboration, as diplomacy often requires navigating complex issues in dynamic, multicultural environments.

What activities outside the classroom have helped you develop career-relevant skills?

I write for the IE International Policy Review, in partnership with Sciences Po.  I also completed the Sustainability Lab, working with Blue Banana on sustainable policy solutions. These experiences have equipped me with practical skills that complement my academic training and prepare me for a future career in international diplomacy.

As vice president of the IE Debate Club, one of the university’s largest student organizations, I’m very active in the various events we run. One of these is the IE Model United Nations, the largest charity MUN conference in Europe. My role in the club has helped me build confidence in speaking while developing my leadership and persuasive communication skills.
