Q&A with Jan Niklas Weinhold
What led you to develop an interest in technology and global affairs?
I would say my interest in technology and global affairs grew naturally from my professional path. In my early 20s, I worked for a tech startup in the US; an experience that opened my eyes to the speed of innovation and how technology can reshape industries. Later, I spent several years in real estate development in Germany, which gave me insight into large-scale project management, investment strategy and the importance of long-term vision. These diverse experiences helped me understand how business, technology and policy are deeply intertwined.
Most notably, working in tech exposed me to how digital transformation impacts not only companies but also societies and economies. Over time, I became deeply fascinated by how technology, particularly artificial intelligence, surveillance systems, drones and automation affects global decision-making and power structures. It influences everything from national security and diplomacy to healthcare and education. I realized that understanding these dynamics requires a multidisciplinary approach that bridges technical knowledge, ethics and governance. That realization ultimately led meto pursue the Master in Technology & Global Affairs at IE University, where I could explore these intersections in depth.
What aspects of the Master in Technology & Global Affairs have you found most valuable so far?
What I value most about the Master in Technology & Global Affairs is its interdisciplinary and forward-looking structure. The program successfully blends technology, politics and ethics, providing me with the tools to understand and navigate today’s most pressing global challenges. Courses such as "New Technologies and Global Governance," "The Ethics of Technological Progress," "Diplomacy and Foreign Policy in the Digital Era" and "Adaptive Leadership" have been particularly meaningful, each adding a new lens to analyse complex issues.
Another highlight has been the guest speaker sessions, which bring real-world insights into the classroom. I’ve had the privilege of attending talks with representatives from Google and Gesda as well as experts in health, neurotechnology and human augmentation, just to name a few. These encounters have deepened my understanding of how rapidly technology is evolving and how critical ethical and policy frameworks will be in shaping its impact.
How would you describe the community and learning environment at IE University?
The community at IE University is incredibly diverse, open and engaging. It’s a place where collaboration and curiosity thrive. Our cohort has developed strong personal and academic connections—we challenge, inspire and learn from one another every day. We have a close and collaborative relationship with both faculty and IE University, who actively listen to our feedback and continuously refine the program. The diversity within our cohort, culturally, academically and professionally, creates a unique environment so that every class discussion feels like a microcosm of global perspectives. What I appreciate most is how IE University promotes an atmosphere of innovation and dialogue. My professors are not just educators but mentors who encourage us to think critically, approach problems systemically and lead with integrity.
How has the program influenced your perspective on the intersection between technology and global issues?
The Master in Technology & Global Affairs has transformed the way I see the relationship between technology and global affairs. I now understand technology not just as a tool for progress but as a transformative force that shapes political power, economic systems and ethical decision-making. The program has taught me to approach issues such as AI governance, data ethics and digital security with both analytical thoroughness and moral responsibility. It’s made me more aware of the global stakes involved in technological innovation and how essential it is to design policies that balance progress with human values.
How do you see yourself applying what you’ve learned in the Master in Technology & Global Affairs to your professional future?
I hope to apply the knowledge and perspectives I’ve gained in this program to the energy or defense sectors, particularly in areas that focus on the protection of critical infrastructure. I’m interested not in developing weaponry, but in contributing to technological defense mechanisms that safeguard societies and ensure resilience in an increasingly digital world. The skills I’ve developed at IE University, such as strategic thinking, systemic analysis and ethical reasoning, will be essential in navigating such complex and high-impact environments.
