Sci-Tech Masters Students Take New Elective in the Metaverse

Metaverse, VR, & AR is the new elective for Master students taught by Sebastian Veldman

Twelve master students participated in the new elective taught by the IE School of Science and Technology called Metaverse, VR, & AR, designed to teach students the fundamentals of the metaverse.

Professor Sebastian Veldman taught students how new technologies change interaction with the physical world on metaverse platforms like Horizon Workrooms and Spatial.

“The focus is on generating business ideas that leverage the use of VR and AR, and the best way to identify those opportunities is by experiencing them for themselves,” explained Veldman regarding the usage of VR headsets during class.

“The best experience for me was the first time when we got inside the headset,” commented student Ashish Kulkarni. “I never expected it to be this good.”

In the fifth session, students presented their newly-created Ready Player Me avatars and explored how the metaverse provides economic opportunities based on blockchain technologies.

Veldman guided the students through Spatial.io, a platform that allows brands and creators to organize live events in the metaverse to share culture. He also showed them different customizations they could achieve in their workrooms.

Based on the lecture and the spaces they explored, Veldman challenged the students to develop a business plan that could be successful in the metaverse.

He explained that the purpose of these assignments is for them to get experience and become comfortable with the platforms.

“That is a skill that you develop and can apply in the future in any business context,” stated Veldman.

Kulkarni agreed, saying the skills learned offered a valuable asset and distinguishing feature for the future.

“In ten or fifteen years from now, everything is going to be about blockchain, metaverse, and all this sort of stuff,” said the student.
