Sci-Tech Students Address Global Challenges in The Viz Competition

The competition is designed to show the powerful role of data and visualization in decision-making.

Students from IE School of Science and Technology participated in the fourth edition of the Viz Data and Business Analytics Competition, delivering top-notch presentations about health and development indices worldwide in front of a panel.

A total of ten teams from several bachelor degrees such as the Bachelor of Applied Mathematics (BAM), and the Bachelor of Data and Business Analytics (BDBA) took part and won prizes under two categories: storytelling and infographics.

“It’s great to see students putting data and numbers to actually defend cases. That is something really important,” said Geoffroy Gerard, Sci-Tech Vice Dean and panel member. “The advocacy you can have proving by data is really impressive. Congratulations and keep doing that, it will convince people.”

Sci-Tech Executive Vice Dean Rafif Srour and Robert Polding, Director of the BDBA joined the panel as well, handing winners their prizes while also giving students feedback on their presentations.

The Bombassadors, first-place winners of the storytelling category integrated gamification into their report and presented The Game of Life, with different data comparing developed, developing, and transitioning countries, with members of the audience assigned to one of the three economic classifications.

“We decided to play The Game of Life, combining real world events with chance. So we’re going to roll the dice through life’s biggest milestones, but this time using real-world statistics,” said BAM student Olivia Rose Campsie.

As for the infographics category, The Big Macs won the first-place prize and presented the efficiency of healthcare investments in Spain, concluding that the sector is performing well compared to other countries in ratio to the amount of money invested.

“Health is good, compared to how much they invest, and compared to other countries. There’s of course room for improvement, but considering that Spain invests way less than most countries in Europe, the investments are efficient,” Adriana Tarzona said, a student in the BDBA.

One of many events, the Viz Competition follows IE Sci-Tech’s mission in expanding students’ learning experiences beyond the classroom and applying their knowledge in real-world contexts. Last month, students participated in an immersive Tech Venture Bootcamp, a six-day workshop aimed at equipping them with knowledge to navigate the tech ventures’ landscape.

“Thank you so much, this is great work. Every year, the quality and the bar of the work just gets higher. Congratulations to everybody,” Srour said.
