Three Students from the IE School of Sci-Tech Present Research at 2024 ACR Conference
Their work will be published in the Springer Book Series: Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems, and indexed by several academic journals.
Three IE School of Science and Technology students presented their research at the 2024 International Conference on Advances in Computing Research (ACR’24) hosted by IE University. Their work will be published in the Springer Book Series: Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems, and indexed by several academic journals including INSPEC, SCImago and zbMATH.
Diego Sanmartín and Vera Prohaska, both students of the Bachelor in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, presented their paper, Exploration of TPUs for AI Applications, supervised by Professor Oscar Diez, on exploring TPUs in cloud and edge computing focusing on its applications in AI.
“Doing projects and tinkering with AI is something most people can do from home,” said Prohaska, “but by following an exploration process through a research driven and peer-reviewed approach, the results have the potential to become much more impactful, both for the community and individual learning.”
Sanmartín said publishing his first academic research paper as an undergrad made him feel closer to making an impact in the field of Computer Science & AI.
“It was very interesting for me to understand how TPUs worked and how much faster they are than other methods because when I worked at Google Brain it was the main source of computing that they were using,” he explained. “So after my internship there I wanted to spend time to get a better understanding of this which led me to write this exploration.”
Louis Golding, studying the Bachelor of Data and Business Analytics, presented a research paper on The Controversies and Challenges of Developing Beneficial Artificial Intelligence, supervised by Professor Robert Polding. The paper discusses the technical and ethical challenges to the critical innovations in the AI sector.
The International Conference on Advances in Computing Research brings around 30 researchers from universities around the world to IE, together with speakers from prestigious institutions such as The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Royal Society of Mathematics (RSME).
"The conference was one of the many activities we are doing at IE which is creating a reputation for rigorous research into science and technology.” Said Polding, “We gave our students the opportunity to take their CVs to the next level and publish in an indexed and internationally recognized conference. The event has made the research world more aware of IE and our exceptional talent."
IE School of Science and Technology continues to offer opportunities for its students to integrate into the professional world of industry and academia. Its Impact Xcelerator Program fosters special initiatives such as the Management Exponential Technology program (MXT) and Tech Venture Bootcamp (TVB) to continue to expand students’ knowledge of the latest cutting-edge technologies and build their entrepreneurship skills.
