About me

I was born and raised in the city of Parma, Italy, before moving to Milan where I obtained both my Law degree and PhD. Since then, I have spent most of my time working abroad, although I do keep my strong ties to Milan and Italy. My interest for International Tax Law took me to the US where I completed my International Tax LLM at the University of Michigan Law School and conducted part of my doctoral and post-doctoral studies. I then moved to Austria and worked as a post-doc scholar at the Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law of the WU University of Vienna. Although my priority has always been developing a solid academic profile, I’m also keen to stay in touch with professional practice. It’s a great way to discover more about my area of expertise and pass on the practical functioning and implications of this career to my students.

Introducing equity into the international tax system

An expert in International Tax Law, Giulio Allevato has always been fascinated by the field because of the strong intersection between law and socio-economic dynamics that come into play. Very often legislatures use the tax code to pursue economic, social, industrial policy goals. Therefore, Giulio believes that understanding the tax legal system and its functioning provides you with insights to comprehend and contribute to the goals pursued by governments.

Giulio first started his academic activity when a professor who supervised the final thesis for his law degree asked him if he would be interested in working for the tax law chair at Bocconi University. Throughout his academic studies and career, Giulio has endeavored to pursue international opportunities to continue his professional development. This approach led him to the US, Austria and now Spain, where he has carried out in-depth research into the international tax law field—particularly tax policy as a regulatory tool. Besides his academic activity, Giulio has also built a renowned practice as an international tax attorney.

Apart from private practice at leading law firms, Giulio also works as an Affiliate Professor of Tax&Legal at the School of Management of Bocconi University. And, in the past, he held various positions worldwide: he was Hugh Ault Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance in Munich, a Hauser Global Fellow at New York University School of Law and an Ernst Mach Scholar at the Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law of the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

His main areas of research are related to International Taxation, International Finance, Corporate Taxation, Taxation of the Digital Economy businesses and Tax Risk Management. Most of Giulio’s papers deal with the regulatory aspects of tax policy, including the use of tax measures to influence behavior, as well as the design and implementation of a more efficient and fair international tax legal system.

Now a professor of Tax Law at IE Law School, Giulio is the coordinator for all undergraduate and post-graduate tax law courses. He also teaches these courses in both bachelor’s and post-graduate degree programs. At the undergraduate level, his teaching focuses on the comparative aspects of national tax systems.

“Never stop innovating and adapting to the multiple inputs and challenges that our society gives us.”

On the other hand, his post-graduate teaching involves the illustration and discussion of the international tax legal framework and the main tax aspects of corporate management. For Giulio, the beauty of working at such an interdisciplinary institution is that these courses can be taught not just for the programs held by IE Law School but also for those organized by other schools—in particular IE Business School—with which he has developed strong ties.

Giulio chose IE Law School because he was particularly impressed by the excellent academic and professional standing of the faculty already working there, as well as its internationalization process, which he found to be a perfect match for his background and profile. He enjoys the positive and vibrant startup spirit that characterizes the school.

Aside from his strong professional background, Giulio is also an avid sports fan. He played soccer for over 15 years before choosing to seek more inspiration through tennis, which he plays at least once a week. Giulio enjoys tennis for its history, techniques and the level of self-discipline it requires.

Giulio has learned many things from both IE Law School and its students. The first is to never stop innovating and adapting to the multiple inputs and challenges that our society gives us. Secondly, cooperation between all stakeholders—including faculty, staff and students—is key to achieving great results. He finally encourages students to be very committed and work hard, but at the same time not to be too afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are part of the learning process, to the extent that we are able to identify, admit and correct them.
