Our Own Pedagogical Style

Our Own Pedagogical Style

At IE Law School, all our undergraduate, graduate and executive education programs for professionals are delivered using methodologies designed to broaden our students’ intellectual and professional horizons.

We share a global approach to law and legal practice through the study of comparative law, global law and international legal practice. We also offer an inductive and immersive approach to teaching; our focus on the deep conceptual development of practical and technical skills—from tech-based skills (AI, automation) to deep professional abilities (negotiation, decision-making, argumentation)—prepare our students to address the complex social challenges of today, helping them create real, lasting impact.

Comparative Law Methodology

All our programs and research efforts at IE Law School are based on the study of comparative law. The diversity of our students is what makes us a unique institution: they come from different countries, they’ve studied in international schools, and they bring with them different perspectives, mindsets and approaches to modern challenges. Comparative law reflects the reality of international law and corresponds to their experience of a borderless world where different cultures and backgrounds meet and interact.

Comparative law is a holistic approach that allows our students to examine the similarities and differences between distinct legal systems and interact with current trends, insights and challenges to develop a truly global perspective of today’s legal landscape. As a result, our students become more aware of the dynamics within various European, civil and common law jurisdictions.

Moreover, our hands-on approach is an ideal complement to the comparative law methodology. Students prepare for success on the world stage by bringing experiences from their home legal systems into the classroom, enriching the comparative law analysis with their personal input, working to solve cases and exploring the inner workings of international legal institutions.

The comparative law methodology is a critical element of IE Law School’s approach to instilling the global and universal vision required in an increasingly

borderless legal landscape. Our students come from all over the globe, and have had exposure to very different legal practices in different geographies. The comparative law methodology broadens their professional and legal horizons no matter where they’re from, or what systems they’re accustomed to.

COMPARATIVE LAW IN ACTION

Technology is disrupting the legal industry, and presenting new challenges to lawyers around the world. IE University’s Comparative Law in Action is the first competition to bring together comparative law, technology and policy in a challenge designed to reflect the complexities of regulating fast-paced, technological innovation. Working in teams, students from different universities across the world will analyze the ramifications created by technology in an up-to-date multimedia case, before building a solution that also leverages technology to address those challenges.

    CRITICAL THINKING APPROACH

Today’s social, economic and political boundaries are more fluid than ever, requiring a new, forward-thinking approach to the study of law. Lawyers, as the architects of society, are called upon to help solve global social problems. At IE Law School, we educate professionals with a legal education that is rooted in the social sciences, equipping them to face global challenges head-on. That is why our undergraduate, graduate and executive education programs for professionals focus on a wide range of sectors and practices, many of which go beyond the boundaries of traditional legal education.

    GLOBAL MINDSET

Designed to broaden our students’ global perspective, these methodologies complement in-class legal case study via Socratic Dialogue with immersive, experiential and hands-on learning opportunities, including our IE Legal Clinic : a mechanism that enables students to practice law in a non-simulated manner.

PRACTICAL AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

At IE Law School, we prepare legal professionals for the future and create lasting impact by contributing to today’s transformation—and digitalization—of the body politic, judicial authority and legal services. Science and technology play a vital role in the transformation of the legal sector and in our research and teaching efforts.
