Broadening perspectives with the Master in International Development

For Kadambari Balasubramanian, it was clear from the beginning that the Master in International Development aligned with her passion for finance, sustainability and social impact. Beyond that, she chose IE University for its diverse community and network, which allows her to channel her global perspective into her studies.

Kadambari’s decision to join the program was initially driven by IE University’s collaboration with the United Nations System Staff College (UNSCC) and the unique immersion opportunities it offers. However, after starting the degree, she realized that the extent of our international network within the development sector would make her experience here even more valuable.

Coming from a business background with a specialization in finance, Kadambari brought with her three years of experience as a research analyst, operations management intern and finance associate. “Through this program, I sought to deepen my understanding of sustainable corporate development, policy design and implementation, impact-driven political agendas and the psychology behind political acumen,” she comments. These are all essential elements for a successful international career at the intersection of finance and social impact.

Since joining the program, Kadambari has particularly appreciated the events, informal talks and conferences organized by IE University. She explains, “The access to high-level discussions and professionals in the field has been invaluable.” Through these events, students meet and learn from experts who have worked at the UNDP, Greenpeace, the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, the United Nations Security Council and more.

Learning from faculty members with firsthand experience in global governance, humanitarian crises and sustainable development has made the program more than just an academic pursuit—it’s an opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application. Kadambari highlights, “Without this experience, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to engage with institutions like the ICC or connect with industry leaders such as Becky Romanovsky, founder of Tradewater.”

Beyond academics, the Master in International Development has helped Kadambari get closer to her personal and professional objectives. In her own words, “This program has allowed me to recognize my own potential, equipping me with the skills, confidence and network to pursue a career that merges finance, sustainability and social impact.”

Looking ahead, she envisions herself using these connections to launch her own social enterprise, an ambition that has been nurtured through the mentorship, industry exposure and networking opportunities provided at IE University.

When asked to sum up her journey in one word, Kadambari chooses “transformative.” The program has been one of self-realization and reflection, helping her stay true to her values and ethics while positioning herself in the professional sphere.

Her advice to prospective students?

“Go for it. You’ll meet phenomenal people, inspiring professionals, supportive classmates, and have access to niche opportunities that can significantly impact not only your career but also your life’s trajectory.”
