IE University and Hertie School announce Dual Master in International Relations and International Affairs
Over two years, students delve into the complexities of international relations while immersed in the dynamic environments of Madrid and Berlin.
IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs and the Hertie School have launched a dual degree program that merges IE’s Master in International Relations experience in Madrid with the Master of International Affairs from the Hertie School, in Berlin. Starting in the fall of 2024, the two-year program will take place on the IE University campus in Madrid and the Hertie School campus in Berlin. It has been designed specifically to equip future leaders with an in-depth understanding of the geopolitical challenges facing humanity and the skills necessary to navigate the international arena.
Created as a response to the evolving demands of the international job market, the dual degree program prepares students to address critical issues in areas such as international security, human rights, and global governance.
“We are delighted to partner with the Hertie School on this dual degree,” remarked Manuel Muñiz, Dean of IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs, and Provost of IE University.
“This new program will be a perfect fit for those seeking a diverse education on global affairs, and who desire to then go on to careers of impact on the international stage.”

“We are delighted to launch a new dual degree and strengthen the cooperation with our CIVICA partner IE University,” says Hertie School President Cornelia Woll. “IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs has become a major player in international affairs in Europe and globally.”
“Our Berlin-Madrid partnership will equip future decision makers with the knowledge they need to thrive in their careers, be it on current armed conflicts, a global health crisis or threats to democracy.”
Cornelia Woll, Hertie School President
During the first year of the program, hosted in Madrid, students will complete the Master in International Relations at IE University, a program designed for students who want to develop their careers in government agencies, corporations, civil society, and multilateral organizations. Students then embark on a full-time internship lasting a minimum of six weeks, in order to gain firsthand exposure to the real-world complexities of international affairs.
In the second year, students will move to Berlin for the Hertie School’s Master of International Affairs, to acquire the tools needed for international policymaking and the practical skills to be able to devise sound policy proposals.
After this two-year program, students will be awarded two degrees: the Hertie School’s Master of Arts in International Affairs (MIA) and IE University’s Master in International Relations (MIR).
