In the United States, election campaigns have no official start, but the day after Labor Day (the first Monday in September) is when what former President Obama called "political silly season" traditionally begins. By then the summer respite and most of the primaries are over, so the general campaigns are approaching their peak, as the media and polling firms begin to make predictions in earnest.
