Italy: towards a "Third Republic"?

The re-election of Sergio Mattarella as President of the Italian Republic is tinged with chiaroscuro. On the one hand, his permanence in the Quirinale is a positive sign of continuity, of political and above all human appreciation of his role as head of state: an upright and honest man, Europeanist and internationally respected, with common sense and great balance; and very close to the citizens, especially in these times of health crisis and gradual economic and social unrest. His presidency has always been distinguished by a high rate of popular approval: recent polls revealed that 58% of Italians supported the possibility of his second term.
