Students from the School of Science and Technology joined peers from across IE University to plant around 100 oak trees in a town 20 kilometers from Madrid, during Sustainability Week organized by IE Sustainability Office in cooperation with the environmental association (R)Forest Project.

On a sunny Saturday, a low emissions bus took 20 students, staff members, and even their children, to Valdeolmos, Community of Madrid, where they had an opportunity to contribute to saving the environment. After the (R)Forest Project volunteers demonstrated how to plant a tree, young naturalists got the hoes and proceeded to make holes and plant the oak trees, getting a true hand-on experience.

One of the students, Diletta Pellegrino who is doing her Masters in Digital Business & Innovation, as well as coordinating IE Technology & Innovation Club, saw the announcement of the event in her newsletter. Pellegrino said she is very passionate about the environment, but had never planted a tree before.

“This is a real way to make an impact on our planet.” Diletta Pellegrino, student of Masters in Digital Business & Innovation

She said her first experience was so enjoyable that she wants to do it again. Pellegrino said she was inspired to find out more about (R)Forest Project and their work.

Nicole Rosow, the Associate Director of the Sustainability Office at IE, praised the participants enthusiasm about the tree planting activity.

“It would be great if I could help them [(R)Forest] in other activities as well.” Diletta Pellegrino, student of Masters in Digital Business & Innovation

“I just wanted people to feel that they can do something, to let them know that altogether we can make a bigger impact.” Nicole Rosow, Associate Director of the Sustainability Office

Recently, the school announced the start of the new bachelor degree Environmental Sciences & Sustainability, designed to teach how to develop solutions to the ecological issues, using scientific and technological approaches.
