Today, software engineering skills are in high demand, and the demand increases year on year. This master’s is an intensive, 10-month program in software engineering with a hands-on approach, an entrepreneurial focus and the flexibility for students to design their own learning path. The broad overview of theoretical and practical classes that this program offers makes it suitable for a wide range of career paths, providing practical opportunities to take part in research through deep tech ventures such as the Impact Xcelerator , as well as participation in hands-on initiatives including the Venture Lab, Venture Days and the annual entrepreneurship event South Summit. Through these and other initiatives, you’ll gain practical experience of every stage of the product development process, from conception through development and testing to managing and selling your product.
The program puts a spotlight on the most in-demand knowledge and skills in the software development market, preparing you to obtain specialized certifications from relevant tech leaders. Its ultimate aim is for graduates to be able to build, test, implement and even sell their own solutions to technological challenges with a firm understanding of state-of-the-art programming tools. Classes are primarily taught by our faculty of industry experts with hands-on experience in the software industry.

The Master in Software Engineering offers a variety of professional certifications to expand your technical knowledge and enhance your practical skill set. IE CERTIFICATE ON FOUNDATIONS OF SUSTAINABILITY
With the IE Certificate on Foundations of Sustainability, you’ll learn how to incorporate a sustainability point of view across all business activities and functions, and be prepared to tackle the social, economic and environmental challenges of today’s world in any organization. And with this qualification under your belt, you’ll boost your career opportunities and show potential employers that you’re committed to sustainability and aligned with their values.
The IE Certificate on Foundations of Sustainability is an optional certificate that can be completed alongside your core studies. In order to earn the certificate, students must obtain ten credits.
Undoubtedly, you’ll be able to gain a thorough overview of the fundamentals, and we’ve ensured maximum flexibility, including alternative routes to attain the number of credits needed.
You may obtain these credits through eligible courses, electives and extracurricular activities such as participation in relevant student clubs. Please keep in mind that some of the above-mentioned courses, electives and extracurricular activities may already be included in your program, while others will need to be added. Additionally, there’s one mandatory component, the Online Learning Journey.
Software engineering can be challenging—but it’s also highly rewarding. If you have a background in science or tech, plus programming skills and a passion for problem-solving, software engineering could be the career for you.
How long does it take to become a software engineer?
Our Master in Software Engineering allows you to gain a valuable qualification in just 10 months. During this time, you’ll work on real-world projects and gain industry certifications such as the IBM Certified Specialist in AI Enterprise Workflow V1, Google Cloud certification, certifications with Oracle, as well as cloud skills certifications through Amazon Web Services Academy, all of which will give you a head start in the job market.
Do you need a degree to be a software engineer?
Although there are other routes into the industry, a qualification such as our Master in Software Engineering offers a distinct advantage as it combines academic knowledge with hands-on experience. What’s more, our partnerships with Cisco, Oracle, Microsoft and IBM allow you to gain valuable industry certifications that are in high demand by employers.
Does software engineering require math?
It helps to have a good understanding of mathematical principles, but any program in software engineering will cover the specific areas of math that you need—linear algebra and calculus, for example.
