Yerko Hernan
My name is Yerko Hernan Arandia Velasco and I’m from Bolivia. I would describe myself as curious, resolute and disciplined—three qualities that have shaped every step of my journey. Curiosity led me to leave my home, my family and my comfort zone in search of new opportunities, cultures and perspectives. Discipline, my constant companion, has helped me earn my CFA charter, build a career from scratch in another country, and consistently deliver results in every role I’ve taken on. And being resolute means that no matter how big the challenge, I always find a way forward.
“I felt an instant connection and knew this was where I’d feel comfortable and grow both personally and professionally. It just felt like the perfect fit.”
Q&A WITH YERKO HERNAN ARANDIA VELASCO
What motivated you to pursue a dual degree at IE University?
I first discovered IE University back in 2016 while I was studying in France. I had the chance to visit the institution, and even attend a class with IE University professors. What struck me most was the people I met; the group was so diverse, but at the same time we were incredibly alike. From that moment, I felt an instant connection and knew this was where I’d feel comfortable and grow both personally and professionally. It just felt like the perfect fit.
What was your background before enrolling, and what specific skills and knowledge were you looking for?
I worked as a financial manager at Centro Móvil—a company of over 100 people—managing exclusive global brands like 3M. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in finance.
What I really wanted was to push myself beyond my local experience—to uncover opportunities abroad, expand my international network and learn what it takes to become a well-rounded professional who can lead at the highest level. For me, the dual degree was about building the strategic, managerial and financial skills I’d need to grow into a future CEO.
What was the most valuable part of the experience?
Without a doubt, the people I met. I genuinely believe that the people around you shape who you become—and at IE University I found friends, mentors and classmates who challenged me, inspired me and supported me every step of the way. It still amazes me that people I spent just one or two years with now feel like lifelong friends.
We keep in touch, we celebrate each other’s wins and we push each other to keep growing. That sense of community and connection is what I treasure most—it’s what made the experience truly life-changing.
How did the dual degree shape your career?
By giving me all the tools I needed to grow into a well-rounded professional. Through the Master in Management, I built a strong foundation for understanding how businesses really work—from supply chains and marketing to data analytics and, most importantly, people.
The Master in Finance, meanwhile, taught me how to transform all those insights into financial results and truly see what drives value inside a company. It connected the dots for me, showing me how every decision, every relationship and every piece of data comes together to create impact.
Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five years?
I see myself continuing in the investment world. Right now, I’m really happy where I am and I see a clear path to keep growing. But I also know that curiosity can lead me anywhere—it’s what’s brought me this far, and what keeps me open-minded.
I strongly believe I’ll still be in investments, but in a more senior, decision-making role where I can have a bigger impact. I know I have the ability, the drive and now the credentials to keep growing in this competitive industry—and I’m excited to see where that journey takes me.
How would you sum up your dual degree experience in one word or phrase?
I’d say “brave new beginnings.” Leaving home and starting over in new countries pushed me to step outside my comfort zone again and again. Putting myself out there at IE University showed me that every new step requires taking risks—and just like in finance, the biggest rewards often come when you have the courage to take them. For me, that risk has paid off in growth, friendships and opportunities I couldn’t have imagined.
Finally, what advice would you give to someone considering the same dual degree at IE University?
Just do it!
