About me

I'm Romina Maderni from Uruguay, a passionate legal professional with a strong sense of justice and proactive attitude. I hold a Bachelor's degree in International Relations and a Bachelor’s degree in law. With over six years of experience as a qualified lawyer, I've worked at one of the Big Four and later specialized in corporate, banking and finance law at a top-tier law firm. I've always been drawn to the impact law can have on the global landscape, which led me to pursue the LL.M. in International Legal Studies at IE Law School. My aspiration is to work in environments where I can combine my corporate expertise with broader legal perspectives to drive meaningful change.

Breaking boundaries through IE Law School's Legal Immersion Experience

When Romina Maderni decided to expand her legal horizon beyond corporate law, she knew she needed a program that would bridge practical experience with international legal frameworks. IE Law School offered exactly that, providing not just classroom learning but immersive experiences in global legal centers.

Having built a solid foundation as a corporate lawyer in Uruguay, Romina was ready to explore how law functions on the international stage. "I always knew I wanted to pursue a master’s degree in international public law or international studies to gain a broader legal perspective and make a tangible impact," she explains. After consulting with European practitioners and carefully researching her options, the LL.M. in International Legal Studies emerged as her clear choice due to its comprehensive approach and emphasis on practical learning.

The program's Legal Immersion Experience proved to be a transformative highlight of her academic journey. "The Immersion Week was an incredibly fulfilling experience," Romina shares. "We had the unique opportunity to travel to Paris and Geneva, engaging with professionals from prestigious international organizations and seeing firsthand how international law is applied in practice."

In Paris, the group visited the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), where they gained valuable insights from experienced professionals. "We participated in a mock arbitration scenario, experiencing the complexities and challenges of arbitrator appointments," Romina recalls from her time at the ICC.

The journey continued to Geneva—often referred to as the Capital of Peace—where Romina visited the United Nations Office. This was particularly meaningful for her, as "working at the UN has been a lifelong dream." The group also attended sessions at the World Trade Organization (WTO), where "leading experts guided us through pressing issues in international trade, demonstrating their passion and deep expertise."

What stood out most for Romina during this experience was the dedication of professionals working in these international organizations. "I would certainly highlight the opportunity to learn from highly passionate professionals working in international organizations," she notes. “Their insights brought theory to life, showing us that what we study is actively shaping global policies."

Perhaps more importantly, the experience changed her perception of these institutions. "It reinforced the idea that these institutions are not as distant or inaccessible as they may seem, making the idea of working in international law feel more attainable," Romina reflects.

For those considering the LL.M. in International Legal Studies at IE Law School, Romina offers enthusiastic advice: "Take full advantage of this opportunity! Engage with the speakers, ask questions and immerse yourself in every discussion. Beyond the academic and professional insights, you'll also get to explore amazing European cities, which is an experience in itself. This week is a unique chance to connect with inspiring experts, deepen your legal knowledge and broaden your global perspective—don’t miss it!"

The international environment at IE Law School has proven particularly valuable for Romina. "My experience so far with the LL.M. in International Legal Studies has been truly fulfilling and exactly what I was looking for," she shares. "The international environment allows me to engage with professionals from diverse backgrounds, enriching every discussion. Academically, we learn from exceptional professors who bring both practical expertise and academic components to the classroom."

As she continues her journey, Romina values both the professional and personal aspects of the program. "On a personal level, the dynamic exchange of perspectives makes learning even more insightful," she notes. The program has not only expanded her legal knowledge but has also brought her closer to her goal of making a meaningful impact through international law.

"This LL.M. is an experience I believe everyone should have at some point in their career," Romina concludes.
