Global Legaltech Venture Days: A unique opportunity for legaltech startups

Law School´s Global League and Ontier, in collaboration with IE and South Summit, have recently launched the Global Legaltech Venture Days, a startup competition that focuses on legal technologies that have a positive impact on major challenges faced by legal operators or legal systems with the aim to improve their operations and promote the cause of justice.

This legaltech startup competition consists of three regionals that lead to a final startup competition in Madrid on July 25. The first Legaltech Venture Day took place in Singapore, where the Malaysian startup EasyLaw, committed to making law efficient, affordable and simple, was crowned winner. The following Legaltech Venture Days will take place in Chicago on June 15 in collaboration with Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and in México on July 17, in collaboration with ITAM.

In each regional event, a group of selected Legaltech startups will pitch 7-minute presentations before a panel of judges, innovators, legaltech experts and leading law firm partners who will ask questions and analyze the viability of the projects. From this initial and regional cohort, the judges will choose a winner to enter a second and final round, which will take place in Madrid during the Law Schools Global League Annual Conference on July 25. The three regional winners will be invited to Madrid, all expenses paid, to compete at the Global Legaltech Venture Day final on July 25.

The potential of startups in legal tech is enormous; they have a direct impact and potential to change legal systems, legal industry and the access to justice.

Come the big day, the three competitors will have seven minutes on stage to pitch their startup to a panel of judges — consisting of a mix of investors, government officials, business pioneers, and representatives of key industries — and answer any questions they may ask. From that impressive group of three, one startup will be announced the winner and receive the final prize.

Creating Unparalleled Opportunities for Legaltech startups

Winners of the startup competition receive a few key benefits including global exposure, a residency program, validation and access to top venture capitalists, among other unparalleled opportunities — not to mention the massive media exposure and access to eager investors.

The Global Legaltech Venture Day final prize consists of a residency program tailored to the winning start-up’s specific needs. The winners will work with IE and ONTIER up to 3 months (starting September 2018). During this time IE and ONTIER will help the team develop its product and/or adapt it to the legal market and carry out pilots with real users, allowing the winning team to align the product with the needs of the legal market and gain insights on matters that might not seem significant to tech founders.

A large part of the program’s value comes from the intense immersion in the legal world and daily collaboration with ONTIER and the IE community as part of the residency program

Furthermore, the winning team will not only have access to all events hosted by Area 31 (IE’s long-standing entrepreneurship center) but also have access to investors, leading professionals and potential partners and customers.

The winning team will also acquire global exposure through Area 31’s and ONTIER’s external communications and have the opportunity to pitch on IE’s stage at South Summit taking place on October 2018, and can have access to the investor Den, conferences in all stages, one on one meetings and matchmaking service with investors and big corporations, leading to unparalleled opportunities.

IE Venture Days take place in cities around the world, connecting the entrepreneurial community across all continents. In the past three years, we have held more than 35 International Venture Days in cities such as Shanghai, Tokyo, Miami, Bogota, London, Santiago de Chile, Paris and many more.

South Summit is the Leading Event from the South, connecting the most innovative entrepreneurs with the most important investors and the global corporations seeking to improve their global competitiveness through innovation.  Every year, more than 650 investors, 3000 startups and more than 12500 people participate in South Summit.
