IE Law school adds QLTS agreement to BARBRI partnership, further broadening students opportunities to qualify abroad

IE Law School is uniquely committed to fostering global legal education. As the only law school in Europe to provide BARBRI prep training for the California Bar Exam, students can pursue careers throughout multiple legal systems and work on multijurisdictional issues.

In a further demonstration of that global commitment, the agreement now includes the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS), allowing qualified lawyers from recognized jurisdictions to practice in England and Wales. With this agreement, adaptable and ambitious lawyers who have a global outlook have the widest possible options for success.

England and Wales use the QLTS as a way for international lawyers to practice there. IE Law School students now have access to study in preparation for that scheme. Its key points are:

  • No restrictions of admission on grounds of nationality or residence. The only requirement is that your home jurisdiction is one of the 185 recognized.
  • The first step in the two-stage completion process is the Multiple Choice Test (MCT). This covers 11 subjects testing participants on their understanding of the legal institutions and procedures in England, Wales and the EU, and their knowledge of the laws in those jurisdictions.
  • The MCT must be passed before the second stage, the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) can be taken. This covers subjects such as client interviewing, advocacy and legal research and writing.

The six-month, flexible part-time course for students starts in January 2021 to prepare for the July 2021 MCT examination. It will require around 10–15 hours’ study per week and enrollment is open until January.
