IE University Law School’s Legal Clinic drafted a legal guide to support Ukrainian refugees that arrive in Spain

Our students from the Legal Clinic developed a very easy and interactive legal guide that Ukrainian citizens need when arriving in Spain.

IE University’s Legal Clinic provides free legal assistance to NGOs, foundations and social action organizations through its students. The Legal Clinic is led by IE Law School professors Sara Sánchez Fernández and Sonsoles Arias Guedón and consists of nearly 100 master’s and bachelor’s degree students at IE Law School.

Dozens of projects are carried out each year, in which students resolve the legal issues faced by NGOs and other organizations. The projects can be in Spanish or English. All projects are supervised by IE University professors and/or lawyers from leading Spanish and international law firms.

If there is one thing that defines the Legal Clinic, it is its vocation to serve others—especially the most disadvantaged and vulnerable. That is why, following the start of the war in Ukraine, Legal Clinic Director Arias Guedón suggested to a group of students the possibility of using the Legal Clinic to help the thousands of people affected by the war.

A project was developed that would, on the one hand, (i) help the thousands of Ukrainian refugees with the administrative and legal procedures required to obtain temporary residence and other administrative permits; and, on the other hand, (ii) prepare a document to address the main issues that Russian students are facing due to the sanctions imposed on their country (frozen accounts, denied visas, etc.).

With regard to the Ukrainian refugees, the Legal Clinic developed a very simple and interactive guide in Ukrainian, Spanish and English, explaining the main regulations, procedures and legal requirements that Ukrainian citizens need when arriving in Spain (visas, legal residence and other procedures related to their refugee status).
