Professor Jonah E. Perlin (Georgetown University Law Center) shares insights on market dynamics, AI adoption, and client expectations.

The LawAhead Center at IE Law School recently hosted a session on "The State of the US Legal Market in 2026," featuring Jonah E. Perlin, Professor of Law and Legal Practice at Georgetown University Law Center. Held at IE Tower, the event brought together partners and senior executives from the law firms and corporate legal departments that are part of the Center’s sponsoring organizations.

Professor Perlin outlined a legal market in transition, characterized by rising fees, economic uncertainty, and evolving client demand. While leading firms continue to command premium pricing, he noted increased activity among mid-sized firms, pointing to a potential redistribution of work across the sector. He also referred to a growing gap between law firm fees and client expectations, which may place additional pressure on perceived value.

A central theme of the session was the increasing adoption of generative AI. Identified as both a potential cost-efficiency tool for clients and a value driver for firms, AI is contributing to changes in how legal services are delivered, including improvements in speed, accuracy, and productivity. While generative AI is expected to influence service delivery, its implications for traditional billing models remain uncertain.

The discussion also addressed talent and sustainability considerations, as rising costs and continued headcount growth raise questions about long-term profitability and scalability.

The session concluded with a forward-looking discussion, addressing both future opportunities and current financial challenges in the legal market.
